sum 2 OF 2 FIGS FIGZ
HAND HURLING OBJECT, TARGET BASE AND TARGET The present invention relates to games or amusement devices, and more particularly to games or amusement devices wherein one object is hurled toward another object with the objective of striking one with the other.
In the past, games or amusement devices of the pitching or hurling type have been quite popular with children and adults alike. Besides being a form of competition which can be played by individuals or teams, such pitching and hurling games have also been beneficial because they inherently involve exercise and contribute to the physical fitness of those individuals participating.
In view of the desirability and popularity of pitching and hurling games, Applicant has devised a new hurling game that is designed to emphasize skill and controll in hurling one object toward another object. More particularly, Applicant's invention relates to a hand hurling amusement device wherein the device basically comprises a tip-over object and a generally elongated cylindrical hurling member which is adapted to be thrown or hurled toward the tip-over object with the objective being to strike the tip-over object and to tip the same from an erect position.
In playing, the individual hurler stands a predeter-- mined distance from the tip-over object which is normally supported a predetermined height above the ground or playing surface, the support height normally ranging from 36 inches to approximately shoulder level relative to the average height of the hurlers participating. The hurler then hurls the hurling object toward the tip-over object with the intent of striking the tip-over object and tipping it from its erect position.
It is, therefore, an object of the present invention to provide a new type of hurling and tip-over amusement device or game.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a hand hurling game wherein a hurling object is thrown or hurled toward an elevated tip-over target object.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a hand hurling game apparatus comprising a generally elongated cylindrically shaped hurling object, and a tipover target object having a base and a head integrally formed therewith and extending therefrom.
Still a further object of the present invention resides in the provision of a hand hurling game which emphasizes skill and control in hurling the hurling object to ward the tip-over target object.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a hand hurling game wherein the hurling object is specifically shaped so as to require skill and generally a keen sense of timing in aiming and controlling the hurling object.
Moreover, it is a further object of the present invention to provide a hand hurling game wherein the hurling and tip-over objects are particularly shaped so as to produce a significant difficulty factor for hitting the tipover object with the hurling object from a predetermined distance.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention will become apparent and obvious from a study of the following description and the accompanying drawings which are merely illustrative of the present invention.
In the drawings:
. generally cylindrical shaped hurling object of the present invention;
FIG. 3 is an end elevational view of the hurling object shown in FIG. 2',
FIG. 4 is an side elevational view of the tip-over object forming a part of the hand hurling game of the present invention;
FIG. 5 is a top plan view of the tip-over object shown in FIG. 4; and
FIG. 6 is a bottom plan view of the same tip-over object shown in FIG. 4.
With further reference to the drawings, particularly FIG. 1, the hand hurling game apparatus is shown therein and indicated generally by the numeral I0. This hand hurling game basically comprises a hand hurling object 12 which is adapted to be thrown or hurled by an individual, the individual being indicated by the letter P in FIG. 1, towards a tip-over target object 14. The tip-over object 14 is elevated above the ground or playing surface G a predetermined height and supported thereon by support means indicated generally at 16. It is noted that the tip-over object 14 is normally disposed in an erect position and supported by plate 16b which extends radially from a vertical post 16a extending up- I wardly from the ground. Post 16a is stabilized by a tripod base 16c which includes a base plate 16d having a plurality of legs l6edepending therefrom. It consequently follows that the support means 16 comprises the generally horizontal elbow plate 16b, the vertical support 16a, and the tripod base 16c.
Turning to FIGS. 2 and 3, it is seen that the hurling object is of a general elongated cylindrical shape having a cylindrical side wall structure 18 and end portions 20 and 22.
The tip-over object I4 includes a base 24 having a bottom 26 and a generally cylindrical wall structure 28. Also, the base 24 includes a top edge 30 which, as seen in FIG. 2, is slightly greater in diameter than the bottom 26. This particular shape of the tip-over base 24 enables the tip-over object 14 to be stably supported when positioned in an erect position as in FIG. 1.
Integrally formed with the base 24 is a head 32 which extends upwardly therefrom and serves as a target when aiming and hurling the hurling object 12. More particularly, as shown in FIG. 4, the head 32 is rounded about the top edges 34, and the lower portions thereof are tapered inwardly and downwardly toward the area where the head joins the base 24.
Although the hurling object 12 and the tip-over object 14 may be constructed of various types of material, it is important that the material be rugged and able to withstand appreciable impacts. One such rugged material would be a wood of the hardwood variety such as oak, birch, or maple.
In playing the hand hurling game of the present invention, the individual P stands a predetermined distance from the tip-over object '14 which is elevated a predetermined height above the ground or playing surface G. Normally the tip-over object 14 is placed at a height ranging between 36 inches and shoulder level of the average individual who will be playing the game.
Once the individual P has stationed himself or herself at the predetermined distance, he or she then takes the hurling object 12 in hand and hurls the same end-afterend toward the tip-over object 14. Of course, the objective of the individual is to cleanly strike the tip-over target object 14 causing it to tip-over from its erect position. Striking the tip-over object 14 and causing it to be tipped from its erect position amounts to a successful throw and the player is awarded a point or points according to a predetermined schedule for accomplishing the objective.
One-particular manner of hurling the hurling object 12 is in an end-after-end fashion. Consequently, as the hurling object passes the vicinity of the tip-over object 14, the end-after-end movement of the hurling object effectively covers an area as wide as the length of the hurling object. But it will be appreciated that if the linear velocity of the hurling object 12 is relatively great,
then it is possible for the hurling object to pass the vicinity of the tip-over object before it makes a complete revolution and consequently the target is missed unless the hurling object is on a direct line with the target. Therefore, part of the skill of the present invention involves being able to hurl the hurling object 12 at a proper linear and angular velocity in order for the hurling object to make a complete revolution while traveling a linear distance less than the length of the hurling object.
In addition, the tip-over target object 14 is specially shaped by providing both a base 24 and a head 32 to produce a significant difficulty factor for hitting the tipover object 14. In the same regard, the base 24 provides a stable support and a suitable foundation for the target head 32.
From the foregoing, it will be appreciated that the hand hurling game of the present invention presents a very desirable game that can be played by individuals or teams. In addition, the hand hurling involved gives the participant an opportunity to exercise and develop a skill while participating in a competitive event. All of these advantages go to make the hand hurling game of the present invention a very desirable game for both children and adults.
The terms upper, lower, forward, rearward, etc., have been used herein merely for the convenience of the foregoing specification and in the appended claims to describe the hand hurling and amusement device and its parts as oriented in the drawings. It is to be understood, however, that these terms are in no way limiting to the invention since the hand hurling and amusement device may obviously be disposed in many different positions when in actual use.
The present invention, of course, may be carried out in other specific ways than those herein set forth without departing from the spirit and essential characteristics of the invention. The present embodiments are.
therefore, to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, and all changes coming within the meaning and equivalency range are intended to be embraced herein.
