Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PAUL HANNIG, OF GLOVERSVILLE, NEV YORK.
METHOD OF ORNAMENTING LEATHER.
SPECIFICATION 'forming part of Letters Patent No. 385,926, dated July 10, 1888.
(Model.)
To MZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL HANNIG, a citizen of the United States, residing at G-lovers ville, in the county of Fulton and State of New York, havein vented a new and useful improve` ment in the Hethod of Ornamenting Leather, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a method of ornamenting leather; and it has vfor its object to provide a means whereby a lasting or fixed iigure of any desired design may be imprinted upon gloves and other similar articles.
rlhe method consists of covering the article to be ornamented with a pattern consisting of a sheet of metal, paper, or similar material which is impervious to smoke, and is provided with openingsin theform ofthe desired figure, after which the article thus covered is placed in a smoke-house and the smoke is allowed to discolor or stain the exposed portions of the article, while thecovered portions are protected `from the action. lt will be seen that any article or material which will be affected in color by the action of smoke may be ornamented in this manner.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view of a glove ornainented in niyimproved manner. Fig. 2 is a View of a pattern such as is used to cover the article before itis placed within the smoke house.
The pattern is laid on the glove over that portion which is desired to be ornamented, and that portion which is intended to remain plain or unornamented is entirely concealed or protected. The glove is now placed in a smokehouse or smokebox and smoke is supplied in ordinary way, which, acting on the portions of the article exposed, discolors or stains the same and produces a change of color which in configuration corresponds with the pattern which has been employed. The bounding lines of the said figures are not irregular or broken, but are clear cut and firm.
This method of ornamenting is simple, as will be seen, and it may be employed in connection with any material which may be dis colored or changed in appearance bythe action of smoke. This action which produces the ornaiucntation does not impair the strength or durability7 ofthe material, but itproduces upon it an apperance which cannot be el'faced.
The ribs on the back of the glove, which consist ordinarily of braid which is sewed on, may be imitated by discoloring the material, and the advantage is that the material of the glove is not perforated to secure it in place, it cannot be torn off, it looks at a short distance exactly like the braid, and it is not as cxpensive to put in place.
Having thus described my invention, l claim l. The method of ornamenting leather and other materials which are changed in appear` ance by smoke, consisting in covering the article with a pattern of metal, papel', or other similar impervious material having the dcsired figure cut therein and exposing the same to the action of smoke, substantially as specilied.v
2. As an article of manufacture, the glove having its surface ornamented by the action of smoke, substantially as speciiied.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own Ihave hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PAUL H ANNIG.
