9 Claims, 3 Drawing Figures PATENTEL E 3 4 SHEET 1 0F 2 DEVICE FOR ATTACI-IING A LATERAL CLADDING MOLDING ON THE EDGE OF A ROOF BACKGROUND OF INVENTION 1. Field to which invention relates The invention relates to devices for attaching a lateral cladding molding or shroud of constant crosssection on the edge of a roof, more particularly the edge of a flat roof. In particular the invention relates to such construction comprising a bracket, whose one limb is to be attached to the roof and whose other limb, which is. substantially vertical, is provided with teeth, which interengage with further teeth for holding a mount and the shroud or molding, which is clamped on the mount, in a vertically non-displaceable manner.
2. The Prior Art Devices for attachment of lateral cladding shrouds of the edge of a roof must be capable of being adjusted vertically during fitting in order to allow for dimen-. sional inaccuracies of the edge of the roof, on which they are to be attached. Frequently mounts, which are to be screwed to vertical limbs of brackets fixed to the edge of the roof, have slots for this purpose. In order to speed up assembly or fitting a proposal has already been made to provide the mounts and the vertical limbs of the brackets with teeth and means such as rings, cleats or the like for clamping them together. Finally, therehas also been made proposal to construct the mounts in such a manner that they can be clamped on the vertical limbs of the bracket elements without the use of any extra'fittings.
The constructions which have to date been proposed are however not satisfactory. The shape of the mounts in question must be cast. If this holding elements are made of aluminium by injection molding, their resilient properties are insufficient. If they are made of synthetic resin, or plastic, they admittedly have the desired elas ticity but the strength is insufficient and they cannot re-' sist loads due to 'wind, the resting of ladders against the edge of the roof and other'operations. Furthermore, mounts of synthetic resin may be endangered by many roofing operations involving the heating of bitumen.
SUMMARY OF INVENTION One aim of the present invention is that of providing a device which consists of a minimum number of parts and is simple to produce. A further object of the invention is to provide a device which can be simply fitted and is able to withstand mechanical loads. In accordance with one aspect the invention resides in that in a device of the type specified above the vertical limb of the bracket is arranged without substantial play between the holding element and the cladding shroud or molding. In this case the teeth of the vertical limb of the bracket can be turned towards the holding element or mount and the latter can be provided with the abovementioned further teeth and/or the teeth of the vertical limb of the angle piece can be turned towards the cladding shroud or molding and the latter can be provided with the further teeth specified. In order to make possible the arrangement of the vertical limb of the bracket between the mount and the shroud or molding the mount can extend through an opening in the firstmentioned, generally horizontal limb of the bracket; however, as a further possibility the mount can be provided with an elongated recess or hole and the one limb of the bracket can be arranged to fit through this recess or hole. Preferably, the mount has substantially the shape of a U-shaped part with a long straight middle section and two end portions which extend at an angle from the central portion to the same extent, measure perpendicularly, from it. The shroud or molding fits around these end portions. In accordance with a further advantageous form of the invention one, preferably the upper, end of the mount ends in an oblique resilient limb, which snaps into a bead of the cladding molding or shroud. The limb may be provided with a handle in such a manner that it can be bent out of its position in which it is snapped in position.
A device in accordance with the invention fulfills the above-mentioned requirements and furthermore has a series of substantial advantages.
One advantage is that the device, enclosed by the shroud or molding, only consists of three parts which can all be made by extrusion. Assembly or fitting is extremely simple: The attachment to the bracket and the clamping together of the mount with the shroud or molding only represent one working operation so that furthermore the precise alignment of the cladding shroud or molding is substantially facilitated. Furthermore, removal of the device is simple and can be carried out. without damage to the parts so that in consequence subsequent corrections as regards alignment do not involve any difficulties. Furthermore, as regards changes in wind direction there is the particular advantage with the device in accordance with the invention that it is less likely to rattle or vibrate than comparable previously proposed devices. In the case of such prior art devices the clamping sections of the holding elements or mounts snap into position directly on the vertical limb of the bracket so that the tolerances, which are necessary for ensuring that snapping in is possible, can lead to play between the mount and the bracket; on
the other hand, in the case of the device in accordance slight displacements of the mount in relation to the bracket in the longitudinal direction of the shroud or molding, which is generally clamped on the mount in a non-displaceable manner so that stress due to thermal expansion can be compensated for, in contrast to the previously proposed constructions.
LIST OF SEVERAL VIEWS OF DRAWINGS Two embodiments of the invention are shown in the drawings.
FIG. 1 shows a device for attachment of a lateral molding or cladding shroud on the edge of a roof in side view, a line of section being taken through the molding.
FIG. 2 shows a section on the line II-II of FIG. 1 in a somewhat minor scale.
FIG. 3 shows a modification of the device in accordance with FIG. 1.
DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS On a'concrete roof I, which is covered in a conventional manner with a vapor barrier layer 2 possibly with a moisture compensation layer arranged underneath it, a bracket 3 is provided, which has screws of which one is indicated by the broken line 4. Above this there is the roof construction with conventional elements, such as a thermal insulation layer 5 and a top cover of the roof which is not shown owing to the selection of the view of the drawing.
The bracket 3 has a vertical limb 7 which is provided with teeth 6. Adjoining the vertical limb 7 there is a horizontal limb 8 with a slightely oblique opening or hole 9. This hole has a mount 10 extending through it. The mount comprises a long straight central section 12 which has teeth 11 adjacent to the teeth 6. At the bottom part of the mount there is an angle portion 13 and at the top part there is an angle portion 14, which is continued obliquely as a limb 15. At the end 16 of the straight limb a handle 17 is arranged which is set at an acute angle to the limb 15.
On the mount 10 there is clamped a covering shroud or cladding molding 18. It comprises a vertical front surface 19 which is parallel to the central section 12 of the mount 10. Furthermore, the molding 18 comprises an enveloping bead 20, set at an angle to the front part, and fitted around the angle portion 13, with which it substantially corresponds in shape. The front surface 19 further adjoins a covering strip 21, which runs parallel to the limb 15 in contact with it and has a ridge 22 fitting around the end 16 of the limb 15.
The vertical limb 7 of the bracket 3 is mounted at the most with a slight gap or with a slight force fit between the molding l8 and the mount 10, and the teeth 6 and 11 fit into each other so that the holding element and also the molding or shroud are held so that they cannot be displaced vertically.
For attachment of the shroud or molding l8 brackets 3 are attached to the roof edge with a spacing of 1 meter for example. A mount 10 is introduced through the hole 9 and its angle portion 13 is fitted into the enveloping bead 20 and then at the top it is pressed toward the molding. As a result the ridge 22 slides along the oblique limb 15 and then on snapping into position comes to lie over the end 16 of the limb 15.
For removal the limb 15 is bent out of position by using the handle 17 underneath the ridge 22. It is, how ever, also possible to do this without the handle 17 and only to bend up the covering strim 21 of the molding 18.
At the ends of a molding with a length for example of 5 meters it is possible during fitting to move the mounts 10 in sideways, providing that the bracket 3 is not yet completely fixed. The mounts can also be used to provide an abutment joint. If the opening or hole 9 is open to the side, so that the mount 10 can be introduced from the side, the bracket 3 can also be finally fixed in position.
in the case of the embodiment in accordance with FIG. 3 the same parts are denoted by the same reference numerals as in FIG. 1. Instead of the teeth 6 on the bracket 3 and the teeth 11 on the mount 10 in this case teeth 23 are provided on the outer side of the vertical limb 7 of the bracket 3 and cooperating with these teeth there are teeth 24 on the inner side of the molding 18. In other respects the embodiment is the same as the one already described.
lt is also possible to use both types of teeth simultaneously.
