Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.,
H. R. SCOTT, OF PLAINWELL, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN WATER-ELEVATORS. n
Specification forming part ot' Letters Patent No. 38,506, dated May 12, 1863.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, H. R. SCOTT, of Plainwell, Allegan county, State of Michigamhave invented a new, Improved, and useful waterdrawer, or mode of raising well-buckets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and t) the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature and superiority of my invention consist in the combination and arrangement of a set of bevel or miter gear-wheels, in connection with an oscillating crank-shaft, so as to work into, or on alternate sides, producing an opposite or reverse movement of the drums, on which the ropes of the wellbuckets are coiled or wound, allowing the crank to be continually turned in one direclfion, the oscillating crank-shaft being regulated by a lever.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Figure l is a sectional view from A ro B. Fig. Lis a sectional view through C and D. Fig. 3 is a topview.
a a is an oscillating crank-shaft, on which are placed two miter gear-wheels, b b, attached at such distance from each other as to work only into one side of the smaller miter gear-wheels c c at the same time, causing the drums It h to move in opposite or reverse directions to each other at the same time, thus elevating one of the buckets and lowering the other bucket at the same time. At d is a ratchet-wheel, with a pawl at d. At d3 is a slot, in which the forked end k3 of the lever R works. R is a lever, with a fulcrum at R', de sgned to change, by-rnoving the oscillating crank-shaft a a, from A to B and from B to A, the working of the miter gear-wheels b b from alternate sides of the smaller miter gearwheels c c, whenever desirable, thus changing the direction of the movement of the drums h h, by which means the buckets, rst one and then the other, are let down intothe Well and taken out. m is a holder, attached to the frame of the well-curb, with two notches at sufficient distance from each other to hold the lever, so that the longer gear-wheels, b b, can be put'in and out of gear, first on one and then on the other side, with the smaller gear, c o, causing the drums h h to move in reverse directions. e e are plumb blocks for the oscillating crank-shaft a a to work in and by which it is held in position at su'icient distance from each other to allow of the gearwheels b b to be moved, so as to Work into the gearwheels c c first only one side and then the other, as seen at e. ff are plumb-blocks, in which the inner ends ofthe shafts g g work, between which and the ends of the drums h h the small niiter gear-wheels c c are attached to or on the shafts g g. n n are boxes in which the outer ends of the shafts g g work and are held in position.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination and arrangement of theI bevel-wheels b b C C, oscillating shaft a c, lever R, crank, O and drums h li, substantially as described.
In witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand.
H. R SCOTT. lIn presence of- D. H. GORTHELL, E. H. SHETTEPLAN.
