SWORD.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 384,584, dated June 12, 1888.

Be it known that I, LA FAYETTE LYTTLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at T0- ledo, Lucas county, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swords or Sword Accouterments, of which the following is a specification.

Military officers, members of uniformed societies, and others when traveling find their swords an annoyance, the blade and scabbard being too long to pack in a trunk or valise, and when held in ones hand attracting attention and being inconvenient and cumbersome.

'My invention relates to and its object is to provide means of disposing of sword blade, hilt, handle, and scabbard when traveling, so that the difficulties here pointed out may be obviated. This object I attain by means of the devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, made part hereof, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of my sectional scabbard, showing arrangement of hinge and sliding ferrule; Fig. 2, same, showing scabbard adjusted to receive the sword; Fig. 3, detachable head of sword-handle; Fig. 4., detachable handle and hilt, and Fig. 5 a central longitudinal section of hollow walking-stick forming case for naked blade without handle or hilt.

My sword set or outfit consists of a scabbard, a sword,and a bladecase made in the form of a cane. The scabbard A is made in sections united by hinge a. Ferrule b, which fits the scabbard loosely,when in place conceals hinge a, but can be slipped away from the hinge so that it will be uncovered, as shown in Fig. 1, permitting the scabbard to be folded so as to allow its being placed in a trunk or valise. The ferrule b may be held in place,thus holding the scabbard rigid by means of screws 0 c or aspring-snap, or other equivalent means. The adjoining ends of the sections of the scabbard may be made to telescope, but I prefer Serial No. 242,612. (No model.)

the method here shown. The handle and hilt of my sword are detachable, the shank of the blade passingthrough the hilt and handleterminating in a screw, d, upon which is screwed head 6. The head a being removed,-the handle and hilt may be slipped off from the shank and placed in a trunk or valise, leaving the naked blade and shank alone to be carried by hand. As a case for the blade, I provide a hollow staff, having its cavity the exact shape of the blade and lined with cloth to prevent rattling, and having ascrew head or cap, f. The bladebeing run into this case and the head or cap of the case being screwed on, as show-n in the drawings, the resemblance to a cane is complete, and the blade is concealed and arranged to be conveniently carried by hand, and thus the sword, with its hilt and handle and scabbard, may be easily and readily packed for traveling, avoiding the difficulties above mentioned.

I am aware that sword-canes, or canes containing a rapier attached permanently to the handle of the cane, are not new; but I am not aware that a cane has ever before been known or used as a case for a sword having the ordinary hilt and handle.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A sword having a detachable hilt and handle and a sectional scabbard, in combination with a blade-case in the form of a cane, substantially as shown and described, for the purposes specified. Y

2. A sword having a detachable hilt and handle, in combination with ablade-o'ase made in the form of a cane, substantially as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
