Abstract

An edge protector for sliding screens bears against the screen frame at one edge and extends laterally to protectively overlie portions of the screen element. A handle plate is secured to the frame, overlies a part of and retainingly holds the edge protector against the screen element.

2 Claims, 3 Drawing Figures EDGE PROTECTOR FOR SLIDING SCREENS BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Heretofore, in the use of laterally slidable screens for buildings, there has been damage to the screen element adjacent the handle plate therefore due to the accidental application of hand pressure to the screen element. This often results ultimately in damage to the screen requiring its replacement.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION It is an object of the present invention to provide an edge protector for sliding screens which will bear against the screen frame and overlie a portion of the screen element adjacent its handle plate for protecting the screen element against damage and injury.
It is another object to provide a unit edge protector of suitable plastic material which is elongated in form and intermediate its ends upon one side laterally elongated so as to bear against the screen frame and to project laterally and protectively over portions of the screen inwardly of the handle element and suitably secured in place by the handle element.
These and other objects will be seen from the follow ing specification and claims in conjunction with the appended drawing.

FIG. 2 is a fragmentary side elevational view of the screen. partly broken away with the screen edge protector assembled, and shown on an enlarged scale;
FIG. 3 is a fragmentary section taken in the direction of arrows 33 of FIG. 2.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION Referring to the drawing, in conjunction with a building wall fragmentarily shown schematically at 11, looking from the inside, there is normally employed a framed upright glass partition 13 and laterally adjacent thereto. a conventional sliding glass door 15 mounted upon a suitable track, shown partly open.
Outwardly thereof is a laterally slidable screen 17 movably mounted upon a suitable channel or track 19 at the top and bottom thereof which is normally opened and closed upon said track and relative to the framed glass partition 13 by a suitable handle 25.
The present invention provides for an edge protector for portions of the screen element as generally indieated at 35, FIGS. 1 and 2.
The present laterally slidable screen includes a preformed or extruded metal frame 21 which is spanned internally and has mounted thereon a screen element 23 anchored in a conventional manner as best shown in FIG. 3.
The formed handle plate 25 is mounted upon one side portion of the frame 21 and is secured thereto by a plurality of fasteners 27. Portions of the handle plate extend laterally inward so as to overlie portions of the screen element 23.
As is conventional construction, the frame 21 has a peripheral inwardly offset continuous bead 29 and adjacent thereto, a continuous channel 31 into which normally the peripheral edge portions of the screen element 23 are nested and suitably anchored.
The present screen protector or screen saver is made of a plastic material which may be transparent or opaque or suitably colored for attractiveness and comprises a unit body 37 which. as shown in the drawing. has a straight side edge portion 39 which bears against the frame. Said body includes a lateral enlargement 4 1 which protectively extends over an adjacent portion of the screen element. The screen protector 35 is snugly interposed between the frame and handle plate 25 and. thus. anchored in position shown so as to protectively engage and overlie portions of the screen element 23 adjacent and inwardly of said handle plate.
As shown in detail. the edge protector body 35 above the lateral enlargement 41 is curved and tapered toward the straight edge 39 as at 45 merging with the upper end thereof.
Said lateral enlargement 41 at its lower portion is tapered downwardly and inwardly so as to merge with the bottom portion of the protector adjacent its straight edge portion 39, as at 43.
As shown in FIG. 3. the portion of the handle plate inwardly of the frame 21 is inwardly offset at 33 so as to snugly and cooperatively and retainingly engage the edge protector body 37.
Spaced along the underside of the inner free edge portions of the body 37 are a series of adhesive spots 47 or adhesive elements which are interposed between said body and the screen element for the purpose of anchoring corresponding edge portions of said body along and to said screen element.
The adhesive spots may be in the nature of pressure sensitive adhesive elements normally mounted upon the undersurface of the protector body along its irregular edge. Alternately. there may be employed elastic elements which have adhesive on both sides secured tive securing registry with the adjacent screen element.
As shown in FIG. 3, the straight edge portion 39 of the protector body is curved inwardly so as to cooperatively extend within the corresponding frame channel 31 and relative to the inset continuous bead 29.
The present edge protector for sliding screens is preferably constructed of a suitable plastic material such as polyethelene or polystyrene or other equivalent plastic material which is semi-rigid but which has some flexibility.
The anchoring of the protector to the screen frame and for protectively overlying the screen element, is the handle plate 25. The protector body incorporates improved anchoring as to its irregular free edge as at 4345 by a series of adhesive spots or elements 47.
Having described my invention, reference should now be had to the following claims.
I claim:
1. In a laterally slidable screen having a peripheral frame and a screen element spanning and secured to said frame, a pair of opposed handle plates mounted on and secured to said frame on opposite sides thereof and extending laterally inward overlying an adjacent portion of said screen element on its opposite sides,
an elongated screen edge protector having a flat body bearing against said frame and engaging and protectively overlying an adjacent edge portion of said screen element interposed and secured between said frame and one handle plate. a series oflongitu dinally spaced adhesive elements arranged along the overlying edge portions of the body interposed between said body and screen element and secured thereto,
said body having an inner straight edge portion registerable with said frame an enlarged central portion intermediate its ends extending laterally beyond the handle plate and against said screen element. with top and bottom end portions having curved and tapered edges extending longitudinally and inward to merge with said body straight edge at its top and bottom;
said frame having an internal inwardly offset continuous bead and channel receiving peripheral edge portions of the screen element, the edge portion of said body being curved inwardly throughout its heighth bearing against said frame and extending over said head and into said channel; the inner portions of said handle plates being offset inwardly, one retainingly bearing against said body, and the other bearing against said screen on the opposed side of the body.
2. A screen edge protector for a laterally slidable screen having a peripheral frame and a screen element spanning. said frame. said protector having an elongated flat body adapted to bear against said frame and engage and protectively overly an adjacent edge portion of the screen element;
a series of longitudinally spaced adhesive elements arranged along the overlying edge portions of the body adapted to engage the screen element;
said body having an inner straight edge portion adapted for registration with said frame. an enlarged central portion intermediate its ends extending laterally with top and bottom end portions having curved and tapered edges extending longitudinally and inward to merge with said body straight edge at its top and bottom;
the edge portion of the body being curved inwardly throughout its height adapted for nesting within a channel in said frame.

Claims (2)

1. In a laterally slidable screen having a peripheral frame and a screen element spanning and secured to said frame, a pair of opposed handle plates mounted on and secured to said frame on opposite sides thereof and extending laterally inward overlying an adjacent portion of said screen element on its opposite sides, an elongated screen edge protector having a flat body bearing against said frame and engaging and protectively overlying an adjacent edge portion of said screen element interposed and secured between said frame and one handle plate, a series of longitudinally spaced adhesive elements arranged along the overlying edge portions of the body interposed between said body and screen element and secured thereto, said body having an inner straight edge portion registerable with said frame, an enlarged central portion intermediate its ends extending laterally beyond the handle plate and against said screen element, with top and bottom end portions having curved and tapered edges extending longitudinally and inward to merge with said body straight edge at its top and bottom; said frame having an internal inwardly offset continuous bead and channel receiving peripheral edge portions of the screen element, the edge portion of said body being curved inwardly throughout its heighth bearing against said frame and extending over said bead and into said channel; the inner portions of said handle plates being offset inwardly, one retainingly bearing against said body, and the other bearing against said screen on the opposed side of the body.
2. A screen edge protector for a laterally slidable screen having a peripheral frame and a screen element spanning said frame, said protector having an elongated flat body adapted to bear against said frame and engage and protectively overly an adjacent edge portion of the screen element; a series of longitudinally spaced adhesive elements arranged along the overlying edge portions of the body adapted to engage the screen element; said body having an inner straight edge portion adapted for registration with said frame, an enlarged central portion intermediate its ends extending laterally with top and bottom end portions having curved and tapered edges extending longitudinally and inward to merge with said body straight edge at its top and bottom; the edge portion of the body being curved inwardly throughout its height adapted for nesting within a channel in said frame.
