Description

NITE
ATENT FFICE CAR COUPLING.
SPECIPICATION forming part of Letters P.tent N0. 383.631, dated May 29, 1888.
Appllcafion filed January 4, 1837. Renewed November 26, 1887. Serial N0. 256,259. (N0 model.)
T0 all w7wm it mag c0ncern:
Be it known thab l, JOHN E. CRAIG, a Citizen of the United Staates, residing ab Soutl1 WVest City, in the county of McDonald and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvexnents in Oar-Couplers; und I do declare the following to be a full, clear, und exact descriptinn 0f the inve1ibion, such as will enable otshers skilled in the art to which il: apperbains to make und use the same, reference being had 130 the accompanying drawings, and to the letters und figures of reference marked thereonwhich form apart of thisspecifieation.
This invention relates t0 irnprovements in car-couplings;and in has for its object the coupling 0f cars from the t0p 0r from either side of he same by means of a vertical and horizontal transverse lever, which, when secured together, forms an inverted letter 1 und 110 this end Ehe invention consists in the novel construction und arrangexnent of parts, as Will be hereinafter n1ore fully described, and speeifically claixned.
In the accornpunying drawings, 130 which reference 1's made ancl which fully illustrate myinvention, Figure 1 1's a sid elevation, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section 0f the same, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing longitudinal und vertical slots.
A represents one end 0f a (zur having cub within its bottom 0r lowest portion a square opening, a, sufficiently large t0 receive snugly the rear end of a hollow burnper, B, the front or forward end 01 head of which is beveled oft upon its inner edges 01 sides, so as to presenta. flaring 1noubh for the receptyion of a link, O, Which asses therein und 0ver a longitudinal rectangular slot, c, made in the bottbnn ;Of the bumper B. Interseoting the slot c isanother vertical slot, D,eub into an inner partition, E, and extending up nearly to the top of the partitinn, so as t0 admit of the vertical movement 0f the front 01 hooked end 0f a eoupling-hook, the end 0f which abnts against the inner side 0f Ehe top of the bun1per, uhus preventing bhe link slipping 0ut 0f the bumper when coupled. This partition E is formed aboub midway the length of be bumper upon the inside thereof.
F is an angularly-constructed couplinghook,
the central 01 larger portion of which has a perforation in ib, through which passes a pin, G, which forms bhe fulcrun1 of the hook when operated. Near the rear end 0f the bu1nper is the enrved portion of the wedgedshaped partition E, by means 0f which und Ehe forward end of the partition E, heretofore described, the larger portion of the hook is inclosed, and against the lower end 0f w'hich bhe rear end of the hook abuts when in is in a position for uncoupling Between this part-ibion E und the rear end 0f the bumper is u vertical perforataion or opening, h, through which asses a rod, z, having an eye, j, ab its lower end, which passes around a staple, K, upon the rear end 0f the coupling-hook, which secures the hook ab that end to the 1'0d. The upper end 0f the 1 0d z has another eye, k, through whieh passes the lower end of a vertieal lever, M, which is baut around, forming an eye, m, tl1ereby securing the vertical lever M and rod z'togebher. Als thejunction 0f the lower end 0f the verbiaal lever M and upper end of the rod i issecnred a transverse lever, N, by means 0f a loop, n,whioh is passed through a perforation in the center 0f uhe lever N, und bent around the eye ab the top of the rod z, t-hus securing the transverse lever t0 the verbieal lever.
The vertical lever M asses through a staple, O, in the end of the car, which keepsib in position and forms a guide for the s2une in its movexnenb with tl1e vertical lever.
Itwillbe readilyseen thabbybhe consbrucbion und arrangexnent of such levers the operator can very conveniently-and expeditiously operate the coupling-hooks either from the t0p of Ehe (rar 0r from nach side bhereof, wherever ib is fonnd mosb convenienb, and all liabiliby of danger in coupling und. uncoupling avoided from passing between the cars.
'Whenever necessary to uncouple the cars, the operator has only l;0 raise the levers, whieh in turn raises the rear ends of the coupling hooks a1'1d allows the front ends of said hooks t0 drop, which uncouples the cars. By depressing bhe levers the rear ends of the coupling-hooks are lowered und bheir front: ends are raised, which ass throngh Lhe coupling links, und thus the cars are coupled.
Having thus described my invention, what I In test-imony whereof I affix my signature in xc c1aim as new, and desire to secure by Letters presence of two witnesses. Patent, is-
