Definitions
- ABSTRACT An egg carton having a tray of plastic and a cover of paperboard, in which carton a rib extends along the respective short sides of the tray and outside the interengagement area of the cover with the tray and is adapted to support the adjacent edge of the cover when the cover is in the closed position.
- This invention relates to a carton for fragile articles, such as eggs, having a tray divided into article-receiving cells and made from a deep-drawn piece of plastic film or sheeting, and a cover hingedly connected to the tray and consisting of a creased, folded and glued piece of paper-board, with said tray and said cover being secured together along their one adjacent margins and the hinge connection between the tray and the cover being formed by a crease line defining the portion by which the cover is secured to the tray.
- U.S. Pat. No. 3,531,044 discloses a carton of the above type.
- the advantages one expected to gain by a carton of this kind, viz., simplifying and improving the printing of the decorative get-up, advertising and informative text on the cover (decoration can be applied to the cover when it is in the form of a planar blank or even to the starting material before the cover is punched therefrom) have lost much of their importance since they imply a certain weakening of the carton.
- the two separate materials which are treated in different ways have a low mutual friction, for which reason the engaging parts readily slide relative to each other.
- the cover In a closed position, the cover is supported by posts between the cells of the tray, which extend in an upward direction from the tray towards the planar 'upper portion of the cover.
- the outermost posts are spaced from the short sides of the carton, and eggreceiving cells are provided between the respective outermost posts and the adjacent short sides of the carton.
- the cover of the carton In U.S. Pat. No. 3,531,044, the cover of the carton has the edge of its short side engaged only with the marginal area of the tray.
- the cartons When handled in stores and in shops by the customers themselves, the cartons are often grasped about their ends, with the fingers of the hand going beneath the tray and the thumb on top of the cover, and the cartons are thus exposed to a pressure which cannot be taken up by the cover edge which engages merely the tray. As a result, the cover edge and the tray will slide relative to each other and the carton will be more or less compressed.
- the eggs in the outermost cells therefore, are often broken when the customer opens the carton.
- the invention provides a carton in which the tray along each of its edges making right angles with the crease line forming the hinge connection has a rib which is disposed outside the interengagement area of the cover with the tray and extends rectilinearly to support the adjacent edge of the cover when the latter is in the closed position.
- a carton resists also very careless handling.
- FIG. 2 is a partial plan view of the open egg carton
- FIG. 3 is a partial section on a larger scale of the egg carton in closed position
- FIG. 4 is a section corresponding to FIG. 3 of a modified egg carton according to the invention.
- the egg carton illustrated in the drawings comprises a tray 2 provided with egg-receiving cells 1, and a cover 3 hingedly connected to the tray 2.
- the tray 2 is made from a piece of deep-drawn plastic film or sheeting. and the cover 3 from a creased, folded and assembled piece of paperboard.
- the tray 2 and the cover 3 are connected together by a joint 4 along their one adjacent marginal portions where both the tray 2 and the cover 3 has a protruding ledge or planar portion 5 and 6, respectively, between which the joint 4 is provided.
- the hinge connection between the tray 2 and the cover 3 is formed by a crease line 7 defining the connecting region or portion 6.
- a respective cell 1 in the tray 2 is defined by a bottom 8 and side walls 9 which diverge from the bottom similar to a comet.
- the side walls 9 merge in posts 12 upstanding over the circumferential mouth edge of the tray 2 and the portion 5 defining said edge. an opposite portion 10, and portions 11 at right angles with said portions 5, 10.
- the posts 12 engage the inner side .of the cover 3 in the closed position of the egg carton, thereby preventing the cover from being pressed inwardly of the carton and damaging the eggs placed in the tray 2.
- Locking lugs 13 project from the portion 10; one such lug is visible in the drawings.
- the cover 3 is made from a creased, folded and assembled piece of paperboard.
- the cover 3 thus has a main panel 14, side panels 15 and end panels 16.
- the panels 14l6 are relatively defined by corner-forming crease lines 17.
- One side panel 15 is provided with the planar portion 6 and the opposite side wall is provided with a lug 18 formed with elongate slots 19 which in the closed position of the cover 3 cooperate with the locking lugs 13 to keep the egg carton in a closed position.
- the respective end panels 16 comprise a primary panel 20 and fastening panels 21 which are integral with the adjacent side panel 15 and are united with the primary panel 20 by adhesive, fusible glue or by welding.
- the primary panel 20 has a foldable flap 22 which is secured to the inner side of the primary panel 20. As will appear from the drawings, the side panels 15 and the end panels 16 diverge from the main panel 14.
- the tray 2 has a rib 23 for supporting the adjacent edge of the cover 3 when the latter is in closed position.
- facing sides 24 of the ribs 23 may converge in a direction away from the tray 2.
- the ribs 23 will also exert a locking action on the closed cover.
- Opposite sides 25 of the ribs 23 may preferably, as will appear from FIG. 4, diverge in a direction away from the tray 2.
- the ribs 23 rigidify the tray 2 and also strengthen the cover by their engagement with it in the closed position of the egg carton.
- the aforementioned assembling of the cover and the connection thereof to the tray along the joint 4 may be effected by adhesive, fusible glue. by welding or in any other suitable manner.
- a carton for fragile articles, such as eggs including 7 a tray divided into article-receiving cells and made from a deep-drawn piece of plastic film or sheeting, and a cover hingedly connected to the tray and consisting of a creased, folded and assembled piece of paperboard, said tray and said cover being secured together along their one adjacent margins and the hinge connection between the tray and the cover being provided by IJN ETED sums MTENT oFFIcE" CERTEFEQATE @F -RREUHN Patent No, 3,836,057 I Dated September 17, 1974 Inventor(s) Sven Ingemar Andersson A It is certified that error appears in the above-identified patent and that said Letters Patent are hereby corrected as shown below:
