No. 382,676. Patented May 15. 1888.

SPECIFICATION. forming pm of Leners Patent No. 382,676, dated May 15 1858i Application ined February-28,1888. sem1Nn.25.e41. (No model) the same, will enable others skilled in the art to which my invent-ion appcrtains to make and use the same.
Thevinvention relates to nails, spikes, brads, and similar devices; .and it consistsin the novel construction of the head or driving end of the nail or spike, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a representation of a flat nail embodying this invention. Fig. 3 is a plan view, and Fig. 4 is an elevation, of a round nail, showing this invention. Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view ofthe same,- showing it as driven in wood-'work Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding-parts.
Referring to the drawings more-in detail, A
l designatcsthestemorbodyofthe-nailorspike,
D the head, and E a point formed on and projeeting up from the head of the nail. H represents wood-work. I is a small cavity in the wood above the nail.
It is well known that in driving nails below the surface of wood-work it is customary to use a nail-set, which takes time and labor. To overcome this objection I construct the nails -With a point, E, projecting up from the head.
Said point is preferably circular in cross-sec Fig. 2 is another view ofthe same.
use said point receives the blow ofthehammer or the driving-instrument, so that thenail can be driven below thesurface of plain wood-work without the use of a nailset. This forms the cavity I above the nail, as shown iuFig. 5. Said cavity may then be lilled in the usual way.
,'For use in ornamental or other wood-work, this construction of nail readily admits 'of a suitable nail-set being used, (as a cup-pointed tion, and may be of'any desired length. In i thereby avoiding all danger' of the nail set l slipping and injuring said wood-work.
I have found in practice that the point on the head of the nail may be made very slender; but it must have enough stiffness'and stability to receive the blow and drive home the v nail upon which it is formed. The above-said point 'may be formed of a different shape and size than those shown in the drawings Without departing from the Spirit of my invention. n
In the drawings I have shown two kindsy of i nails; but this invention may be applied to nails of any desired pattern.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
upon its head, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. 'Anail or brad provided with a point upon,
