UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIC FREDERICK SCHIMPER, OF WEEHAWKEN, NEW JEEsEY, AssIcnoE OF ONE- HALF TO WILLIAM M. SOHWENKER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HOSE-CLAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 382,557, dated May8, 1888.
Application filed February 1, 1888. Serial No. 262,617. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK SoHIMP E, of Weehawken, in the county of Hudson, State of New Jersey, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Hose 01am ps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved hoseclamp for attaching the hose to the tubular end of the coupling in a firm, tight, and reliable manper, and dispensing thereby With the wiring or similar fastening of the hose; and the invention consists of a hose-clamp composed of anencircling band having inclined teeth or serrations at one end and interlocking teeth or serrations at the overlapping end, said overlapping end being slotted and retained on the underlapping endby a projecting abutment and by a transverse spring-key passed through an eye of the underlapping portion, so as to secure in connection with the elasticity of the hose the rigid interlocking'of the serrated ends of the band.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a vertical transverse section of a coupling and a hose retained thereon by my improved hose clamp. Figs. 2 and 3 are, re-- spectively, a vertical longitudinal section on line a: m, Fig. 3, and a top view of the interlocking portions of my improved hose-clamp o drawn on a larger scale; and Fig. 4. is a top view of a hose-coupling, showing the hoseclamps in position on each section of the coupling.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a band of stout sheet metal, which is of sufficient length to be placed around the hose after the same is applied to the tubular end of the hose- 40 coupling. The overlapping ends of the band A are both provided with inclined. teeth or serrations, the teeth b of the underlapping end being arranged at the outer: surface of the end and inclined in one direction, while the teeth b of the overlapping end are arranged at the inner surface of the band and inclined in the opposite direction to the teeth b of the underoverlapping end is provided with a longitudinal slot, d, through which projects a solid 'portion or abutment, d, of the un'derlapping portion of the band, said solid portion or abutment serving to hold the overlapping ends in proper position and prevent the lateral shifting of the same. The outermost/end of the overlapping portion of the band B is provided with a recess, 6, that fits on a raised portion or eye, 6, of the underlap'ping end. Through the eye e is passed a spring-key, e, which retains the recessed end of the overlapping portion in place, so as to prevent it from bending up or'engaging other objects, whereby the release of the ends of the clamp may be pro- .duced. When the clamp is applied to the end of the hose placed on the ribbed and tubular f end of the coupling, it holds the hosefirmly in position, so that it cannot get detached, but form's areliable tight fastening device for .the hose to the tubular end of the coupling.
Having thus described myinvention, Iclaim as new and'desire to secure by Letters Patent-'- I 1. A hose clamp consisting of afcircular band provided with I, overlapping ends, said ends having interlocking teeth or serrations,
a longitudinal slot in the overlappingend,and 7 5 a projecting portion or abutment on the"'un-- r.
derlapping end extending into the slot of the overlapping end, substantially as set forth. 7 2. A hoseclamp composed of a circular band having" overlapping ends, both ends being provided with interlocking teeth or serrations, the overlapping end having a longitudinal slot and the underlapping end an abutment, and an eye with a transversespring-key, so as to engage and retain the overlapping end, substantially as set forth. 4 t 1 In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
