LASTING TOOL.
Patented May 8 1888.

UNITED STATES JOSEPH ROMULARD JACQUES, or HANCOCK, MICHIGAN.
LASTlNG TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 382,429, dated May 8, 1888.
Application filed February 14, 1883. Serial Nn. 263,994.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosErr-r BOMULARD JACQUES, of Hancock, in the county of Houghton and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Lasting-T0ol, of which the following is afull, c1ear,and exact description.
My invention relates to an improved lastingtool for sh 0e makers and saddlers, and has for its object to provide pinohers, which when applied will not tear or disarrange the thinnest insole, and which will be provided with a fulcrum, whereby when the edge of the upper is gripped the pinchers will act as alever In carrying out the invention, A and Brepresent two levers or handles formed, respectively, with downwardly-curved jaws D and O. The lever A is slotted at or near the base of thejaw D, and the lever B is passed. through the same and pivoted at a.
Thejaws O and D are corrugated or otherwise roughened on their inner surfaces, and the curve of the saidjaws is such as to partake, essentially, of the contour of a parrot-bill. Upon the outer surface of the upper jaw a preferably annular and more or less conical projection, E, is formed, adapted for use-as a upon the last.
(X0 model) hammer. On the under side of thejaw D, at or near the base, ears I) are produced, between which ears a lip, H, is pivoted, the body of the lip being essentially of equal width with the jaws and curved upwardly and forwardly to a contact in use, with the lowerjaw a distance from the end. The under surface, 71, of the said lip is corrugated or roughened, to prevent slipping when the lip is utilized as a fulcrum for the lever A and B.
In operation the boot or shoe upper is held between the jaws, the lip being allowed to rest This having been effected, it simply becomes necessary to bear down upon the levers, whereupon the leather is quickly drawn in direction of the middleof the last.
The lip, being pivoted and permitted to bear against the lower jaw, forms a perfect rocking fulcrum for the tool, remaining at all times stationary in use, which would not be the case with a rigid partially downward-curved lip, as the latter having a fixed fulcrum'point would slip and draw the inner sole from the upper. When not employed, the pivoted lip falls down out of the way.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described lasting-tool,consisting of the-handles A B, the downwardlycurved and corrugated jaws O D, the projection E on the jaw G, and the curved and corrugated lip H, pivoted between ears?) on the jaw D, as specified.
