Abstract
A hinge connecting a cap to a body member of a yarn treating jet is modified with a biasing means for exerting a force against the hinge pin normal to the mating surfaces of the cap and body member of the jet.

' BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to apparatus for use in treating synthetic filaments with fluid. More particularly, it concerns improved apparatus which may be separated into at least two pieces for stringup and which seals more uniformly when closed. i
Many devices for treating yarn with fluids consist of at least two pieces which must be separated for introducing the yarns and then must be closed during operation. In Bauer U.S. Pat. No. 2,938,257, two portions of the apparatus are connected by a hinge on one side and are maintained in closed position by a latch at the other. This arrangement is inexpensive and easy to operate. However, such hinges must be machined very accurately in order to maintain a tight seal between the separable parts at the hinge side. Any corrosion or warping of the mating surfaces in use, as may particularly happen when the devices are operated at elevated temperature, may cause the surfaces to meet either too tightly or too loosely-at the hinge side. This problem wasrecognized by'Clendening et al., in U.S. Pat. No. 3,261,071, wherein twomating portions of the jet device were maintained in tight and uniform contact by means of pneumatic or hydraulic cylinders which permittedthe surfaces to be separated for stringup. Such I arrangements, while effective, arequite expensive. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION A yarn treating jet including a body portion and a cap having engaging surfaces forming at least one channel through which yarn passes-for treatment,,is held together by a hinge at one side and a latch at the other side. The cover has a hinge pin attached to it at one side, and the body has at least one hole to accept the.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED,-
. EMBODIMENT Referring to the drawing, a typical yarn treating dev 2 I vice, may consist of albody 1 and an engaging cap 2. One or more yarn treatment channels 3, formed between the mating surfaces of the cap and body, are provided for treating one or more individual ends of yarn or a wide band of filamentary tow. Hinge pin 4 is attached to one side of cap 2and passes through elongated hole 5 insupport 6, which is part of body 1. Pin 4 fits freely inhole 5 for translational as well as rotational movement. Cap 2 may be swung'open as shown in phantom for introducing yarn or tow into channels 3. Cap 2 is then closed and is secured to body 1 by turning latch'8 located at the other side of the cap so that flat portion 9 can be slid past key 10 whenlatch 8 is pushed toward body 1 against the resistance of spring 11. Latch 8 is then turnedso that'dog 12 engages key 10. The latch side of cap 2 is'then held in contact with body 1 by the pressure of spring 11.
On the hinge side, the force of a spring or equivalent is applied to hinge pin 4 normal to the mating surfaces of the cap and body to urge them'into tight engagement. One means'for supplying the force is shown-in the drawing. Ball 13 pushes downward on hinge pin 4 under theforce of spring 14. Balll3 and spring 14 are encased and retained in. externally-threaded housing 15 which may be purchased as a commercially available assembly as is well known-in the art. The hinge side of cap 2 is thus held in contact with body 1 bythe'force of spring 14 which force may be increased or decreased by adjusting'the position of housing 14 within support There may be two supports 6, one at either end of the device, each support containing one ball and spring assembly. Alternatively, there may be only one support 6 containing atball and spring located near the middle of the device pressing down near the middle of the hinge pin 4.
What is claimed is:
1. In a yarn treating jet including a body and a cap having engaging surfaces forming at least one channel through which yarn passes for treatment, said cap and said body being held together by a hinge at one side and a latch at the other side, the improvement comprising: said cover having a hinge pin attached thereto at said one side, said body having at least one hole in said one side, said hinge pin fitting freely in said hole for translational and rotational movement therein; and a biasing means connected to said body and engaging said pin for exerting a force on said pin normal to said surfaces and urging said cap into tight engagement with said body. v

Claims (2)
1. In a yarn treating jet including a body and a cap having engaging surfaces forming at least one channel through which yarn passes for treatment, said cap and said body being held together by a hinge at one side and a latch at the other side, the improvement comprising: said cover having a hinge pin attached thereto at said one side, said body having at least one hole in said one side, said hinge pin fitting freely in said hole for translational and rotational movement therein; and a biasing means connected to said body and engaging said pin for exerting a force on said pin normal to said surfaces and urging said cap into tight engagement with said body.
2. The apparatus as defined in claim 1, including biasing means associated with said latch for urging said cap into engagement with said body at said other side.
