Abstract

A flexible band fitting around an upper portion of a container just below a bead conventionally provided at the upper end of the latter, primary and secondary box structures extending radially from the respective juxtaposed end portions of said band, a handle being mounted in said primary box structure, the latter also mounting an arcuate rod which is slidable in aligned holes formed in said secondary box structure. The rod is apertured vertically to receive a locking pin, manually disengageable, which normally holds said band in container gripping position.

2 Clains, 7 Drawing Figures DETACIIABLE HANDLE TO FIT A CERTAIN SIZE AND APPROPRIATE CONTAINER SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION Containers such as ground coffee cans, when emptied, are well adapted to serve as cooking utensils and only lack a suitable detachable handle to render them available for such use.
It is a primary object of the invention to provide such a handle to fit a coffee can or any can of a'given size for handling said can when it is hot.
Each of such cans is conventionally provided with an external bead at its upper open end and it is a particular object to provide such a handle mounted on a band and circling the can just beneath said bead and thus be retained in gripping relation with the can until deliberately manually released therefrom.
Another object of the invention is to provide such a detachable handle having a lock means which is held in place by gravity and manually releasable by upward pressure thereagainst from beneath the handle.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is a-plan view of the invention showing the same as when applied to a coffee can having a bead at its upper end.
FIG. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 2--2 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is a vertical'sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of FIG. 2.
FIG. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical sectional DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Referring to FIGS. 1, 2 and 3, the invention is there shown as preferably including a detachable handle 10 which is mounted in a socket 11 comprising a primary box structure secured radially to one end of a circular metal band 12, the opposite end portion of which has provided thereon a secondary box structure 13 having horizontally aligned holes 14 and 15 for slidably receiving an arcuate rod 16, one end of which is rigidly secured to the box structure 11.
Provided vertically in the rod 16 is a hole 17 for receiving a locking pin 18 which is looped downwardly from the upper end of an actuating rod 19 having a horizontally bent lower end portion 20. The box structure 13 includes a pair of horizontal walls 21 and 22 which have aligned vertical apertures 23 and 24 for vertically guiding the rod 19. The locking pin 18 is vertically guided in holes 25 and 26 and is in vertical alignment with the arcuate rod 16 and the hole 17 provided in the latter so that when the band 12 is tightened around an upper portion of a can 27 having a bead 28 at its upper end, the hole 17 is in vertical alignment with the locking pin 18 and the latter will drop by gravity through said hole thereby locking the band 12 in gripping relation with the can 27.
This downward movement of the locking pin 18 causes the horizontal arm 20 of the mounting rod 19 to extend downwardly below the box structure 13 as shown in FIGS. 5 and 7 where the arm 20 is readily available for contact by the hand to lift the same upwardly and release the handle 10 from the cam 27 whenever this is desired. In the absence of manual actuation of the locking pin 18 in this manner, the handle 10 of the invention remains securely attached to the can 27. By virtue of the conventional provision of cans of the type with which this invention is designed to be used with an upper bead 28, the possibility of can 27 slipping downwardly through the band 12 is quite remote. In fact, with this band properly applied, such an inadvertent slipping of the can through said band is impossible.
It is to be noted that the arm 20 at the lower end of the rod 19 engages the bottom end of the box structure 13 when said arm is manually engaged and lifted upwardly to disengage the handle from the can 27 and that this disengagement takes place with the locking pin 18 still extending downwardly through the hole 25 in the wall 21 so that the rod 19 and pin 18 are permanently assembled with the box structure 13.
I claim:
1. In a handle assembly adapted to embrace a vertical side wall portion of a container having an outward radial bead just above said wall portion, the combination of:
a thin-gauge sheet metal band shaped to snugly embrace said container side wall portion just beneath 'said bead with terminal end portions of said band in closely opposed relation;
primary .and secondary sheet 'metal box means formed to extend radially from said band end portions, said primary box meanshaving an arcuate rod mounted thereon approximately coaxially with said band, the secondary box means being apertured horizontally to slideably receive said arcuate rod, said rod having a latch recess formed vertically therein;
latch means vertically slideably mounted within said secondary box means to gravitationally occupy said recess when the latch means and recess are aligned for such occupancy, said alignment occurring when said band is in tightened condition; and
a container lifting handle mounted on and extending radially outwardly from said primary box means.
2. A combination as recited in claim 1 wherein:
said latch means has the form of a hook and extends downwardly below said secondary box means so as to be manually actuatable from below said secondary box means to withdraw said latch means upwardly from said recess by manually pressing on the lower extending end portion of said latch means thereby disconnection said secondary box means from said arcuate rod, thus permitting said sheet metal band to be relaxed and withdrawn from engagement with said container.

Claims (2)

1. In a handle assembly adapted to embrace a vertical side wall portion of a container having an outward radial bead just above said wall portion, the combination of: a thin-gauge sheet metal band shaped to snugly embrace said container side wall portion just beneath said bead with terminal end portions of said band in closely opposed relation; primary and secondary sheet metal box means formed to extend radially from said band end portions, said primary box means having an arcuate rod mounted thereon approximately coaxially with said band, the secondary box means being apertured horizontally to slideably receive said arcuate rod, said rod having a latch recess formed vertically therein; latch means vertically slideably mounted within said secondary box means to gravitationally occupy said recess when the latch means and recess are aligned for such occupancy, said alignment occurring when said band is in tightened condition; and a container lifting handle mounted on and extending radially outwardly from said primary box means.
2. A combination as recited in claim 1 wherein: said latch means has the form of a hook and extends downwardly below said secondary box means so as to be manually actuatable from below said secondary box means to withdraw said latch means upwardly from said recess by manually pressing on the lower extending end portion of said latch means thereby disconnection said secondary box means from said arcuate rod, thus permitting said sheet metal band to be relaxed and withdrawn from engagement with said container.
