5 Claims, 6 Drawing Figures I FROM DANGLING This invention relates to a'device for preventing a band for usein bundling a folded umbrella fromdangling at the time when the umbrella isunfolded.
The umbrella band is indispensable. when the umbrella is rolled up tightly so as to be snugly insertable into a sheath or the like. Said umbrella band, however, is entirely useless when the umbrella is opened for use. It is desirable, therefore, that the umbrella band, while holding the function of bundling the umbrella when folded, should not be anoffense or obtruction to the eye when the umbrella is unfolded.
In the conventional umbrella band, though its functions were achieved fully when the umbrellawas folded and rolled up, said umbrella band dangled from the edge of the umbrella when opened, said dangling band not only swinging awkwardly and unshapely but also causing inconvenience of having to turn round the umbrella if said band happens to be located in the front. Moreover, the umbrellaband had a further disadvantage in that the rain drops were spattered around the dangling band.
Furthermore, when the conventional umbrella was used by an infant or a pupil, the danglingband involved the risk of obtructing the sight. resulting in a traffic accident in the worst case.
A primary object of the present invention is to elemihate the disadvantages in the conventional umbrella band by providing a device wherein the umbrella band is made of resilient material and'the front end thereof issupported by a support piece secured to the umbrella cloth thereby preventing the band from dangling when the umbrella is opened.
A second object of the present invention is to provide a dangling preventive device having an adjustment means for adjusting length of the band thereby enabling to offset a slack caused by deterioration through a long period of use.
These and other objects are accomplished by the parts, improvements, combinations and arrangements comprising the invention, preferred embodiments of which are shown by way of examplein the annexed drawings and herein described in detail.
FIG. 1 is a plan showing a first embodiment of the invention. I
FIG. 2 is a longitudinal section on a magnified scale of the principal part of said embodiment. I
FIG. 3 is a plan showing a slight modification of the band in the first embodiment. h
FIG. 4 is a longitudinal section on a magnified scale of the principal part of the said modification.
FIG. 5 is a plan showing a second embodiment of the invention. 1
FIG. 6 is a longitudinal section on a magnified scale of the principal part of said embodiment.
In FIGS. 1,2, 3 and 4 showing the first embodiment, the numeral 11 designates an umbrella comprising umbrella cloth 13 stretched over umbrella ribs 12.
securely sewn up to an umbrella rlbl2 through the umbrella cloth 13 as shown in FIG. 1, or inserted into and sewn up to a piece 22 provided adjacent the umbrella rib as shown in FIG. 3. I I A support piece 16 for inserting the front end portion of the band 14 therethrough is-secured by means 'of sewing to the surface of the umbrella cloth 13 so that said end portion of the band 14 is disposed at a substantial 'rniddle portion between two adjacent ribs 12, a hook ring 18 provided with a lug 117 being fitted to the front end of the band 14 inserted between the support piece 16 and the umbrella cloth 13, the hook ring 14 being adapted to prevent the band 14 from slipping out of the support piece 16 at the time of contraction of the band.
Furthermore, to the surface of the support piece 16 is secured a button 19 engageable with the hook ring 18 fixed to the front end of the band 14.
In the instance of the illustrated embodiment, the umbrella is of a noncollapsible type, the band 14 being arranged to the outside? of the umbrella cloth 13. In the case of a collapsible umbrella, the band 14 and the support piece 16 are to be arranged to the inside of the umbrella cloth, the end of the band 14 being secured directly to the umbrella rib.
The function of the first embodiment is herein described in detail. When the umbrella 11 is opened, the band 14 is in the state as shown in FIGS. 1, 2, 3 and 4, that is, due to tensionof the umbrella cloth and contraction of the resilient band 14, the band 14 is stretched closely over the umbrella cloth 13 with the hook ring 18 prevented from slipping out from the support piece 16. As a result, the band 14 isprevented from dangling from the edge of the umbrella cloth 13 when the umbrella 11 is opened. 2
Furthermore, at the time of folding the umbrella 11, the front end'of the band 14 is pulled by means of the lug 17 after the umbrella 11 is folded, the band 14 being elongated and wound round the exterior periphery of the umbrella 11, the hook ring 18 at the front end of the band 14 being engaged with the button 19 on the support piece 16 thereby keeping the umbrella in the rolled state by means of the resilience of the band 14.
Referring now to FIGS. 5 and 6, the second embodiment is herein described in detail. Similar parts are shown by similar reference numerals to those in FIGS. 1, 2, 3 and 4, and relative explanation is omitted.
In the second embodiment, the length of the band 14' is adapted to be adjustable. The band 14 disposedon the outside edge of the external or internal surface of the umbrella cloth 11 is formed with an elongated resilient belt, the band.l4 being doubled upadjacent the end thereof, the bent portion 20 being hooked .to a piece 22 as shown in FIG. 4 or directly to an umbrella rib 12, the ,end of the band 14 being secured to an ad- The numeral 14 designates a band made up of a resilthe elongated-state, the exterior periphery of a folded umbrella, the band 14 being disposed closely on the surface of the umbrella cloth 13 at a position adjacent the outside edge thereof, the end of said band 14 being justment means 21 having two apertures slidably fitted to the middle part of the band 14, the length of the band 14 being adjustable by moving the means 21.
A support piece 16 is secured to the inside .edge of v 1 the umbrella cloth 11 substantially at a middle portion between the adjacent umbrella rib 12, a hook ring 18 provided with a lug 17 being fitted. to the front end of the band 14 inserted through the support piece 16, a butto'n19 being secured to the support piece 16. In this case, the length of the band 14' is adjusted so that the hook ring 18 is just engageable to the button 19 with thus precluded. I
At the time of folding, the inside edge of the outer half of the umbrella cloth 13 is turned outside in the case of a collapsible umbrella, the band 14 being wound round the umbrella 11 by extending said band 14 by means of the lug 17, the umbrella 11 being thus bundled up by engagement between the hook ring 18 and the button 19. If a slack is caused in the band 14 because of deterioration of the band 14 through a long period of use, the length of the band 14 can be suitably adjusted by moving the adjuster 21.
