Description

' BENJAMIN F. cAHILL, or ATLANTA, GEoRGIA. f
SPECIFICATION forming part of Leners Patent No. 381,329. atea April 17, lass.
- Application filed December 1, 1887. Serial No. 256,718. (No model.) f
y To all whom it may concern: a
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. CAHILL,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented a new and usefulAdjustable J'anib; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and'eXact description of the invention,"such as will enable others skilled ink whereby they maybe adj usted to regulate the size of the opening, the details of which will ,be hereinafter fully setforth, aud the parts thought to be new pointed out in the claim.
Itis a Well-known fact that sash and doors, especially doors, when put up of nnseasoned material or in damp weather, will shrink and leave too great an opening betweenthemand their jambs, and when put up of very dry material will swell bythe absorption of moisture to such a'degree as to prevent their closing readily. f g
This invention is'equally applicable to Windows and todoors, in both of which cases it is applied in substantially the same way.` I will.
therefore describe itpas being applied to a door,
in which it is shown in the accompanying drawings, of which drawingsn Figure lis a side view of; a door and a casing, except the face-casing on one side, a pory,
tion of the casing being in section for the purpose of showing the means of adjusting the jambs. Fig. 2 isa horizontal section of the casing through a set of the adj usting-screws.
Fig. 3 isa top view of one en d of the top jamb and the top end ofthe sidejamb. Fig. 4 is a section on the line a: a: in Fig; 8, further showing the tongued top and side jambs.
In the figures, like reference-marks indicating corresponding parts in the several views,
YA is the door, B the 'sidejambs and the top bar.
In Fig. 2 the face=casings are marked Eand F, those marked E not being shown in Fig. 1.
.The frame G, composed of several parts corresponding to the several parts of the jamb,
' isjrigidly fastened to the wall and to the facecasings, and is located so as to permit a suffithrough. The side and-top jambs'are adjust` ably joined by interlocking tongues, as shown.' The tongues on the side jambs, B, are parv as shown in Fig. 4, to lallow the Ytop bar, G, to
t j usted by means of the screws I:I engaging with cient adj ustrnent of the jambs by the screws Y H. The screws H passy through ythejam'bs,l 55. and `have on the backside of said jambs apin, l p l h,'and a washer, h', or they may, instead ofir Y the'said pin and washer, be provided withr a collar of anyA desirable kind. The nuts 'I fare l in place by thel strip J, which strip may be of inserted 'in the frame, as shown, and are held wood or metal and be fastened .to the frame. The pieces I should haveholes through them tov correspond Y with the holes throughl the jamb and frame for the screws to pass intol or' tially-cut away on the side toward the door,
entirely cover the opening and keep aclose joint on the inside of the jambs, itpnever being Y necessary'to adjust the topbar, C, except for ythat purpose. The change in the dimensions f ofta door is generally in its width. The side j 'ambs may therefore be adjusted to accommodate the changing width -of thedoor-totheek-v tent` of the offset onthe tongues of the jamb B .without opening thejointsbetween thefjambs 1 8o B and top bar',`C. This adjustment is effected by turning in or out the screws H, the jafinbs being not otherwise held in position.
It is immaterial to the operationzof this'k iny vention whether the frame'Gismade with'and apartof the door-casing-orthe studding of the building. f It is also immaterial whether a the nuts I are inserted or the screws H screwed into holes iu the Apieces G; but `I prefer the construction shown. l Y n Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the UnitedStates, is-,L- t In a door-casing, the adjustable jambs B, ad-
a stationaryheld nut in the stationary part of the siding, said screw'being prevented from moving longitudinally by its headf and the collar h and pin h', in combination with the top bar, C, said jambs Band topbar, C, connecting by interlocking tongues, 'asset forth.v
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence'of two witnesses... l a f f' f v BENJAMIN F.` CAHILL; Witnesses: v 1
A.' P. Woon, N. CANNON.
