Be it known that LEDGAR J. STEWART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sheboygan, in the countyof Sheboygan and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new/and useful Improvements in Devices for Packing Glass Bottles, &c.; and I do declare the followmg to be a full,'clear, and exact-description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it' appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the acfigures of referencemarked thereon, which forma part of this specification. This invention relates to wrappers or jackets for bottles'and articles of kindred nature which are likely to be broken during transportation.
The object of the invention is to. devise a wrapper which can chiefly'be constructed by nomical in cost. The wrapper or jacket will be made of various sizes and shapes and is intended to have the article to which it is to be applied slipped therein e'ndwise.
5 suitable size and shape. The edges of the sheet are overlappedand securedtogether by Z I pasting, and the tubes, in addition to being held together byvthe packing and the adhesive material, as hereinbefore mentioned, are fur- 0 ther secured together by extending the overlapping edge other tube; This .relieves the strain on the v packing, which would yield when placing the wrapperover a bottle, particularly if the inher tube fitted the said bottle snugly. By having the edges of the sheetsoverlapped the tubes can be constructed quickly and will be very substantial, and by having the edge of one tube extended and secured to the other tube a positive connection is formed between the two tubes, which :will effectually prevent any lon-. gitudinal movement ofeither. By having the companying drawings, and to the letters and machinery and which will be simple and eco The improvement consists in having two "theone over the other,
of one tube and pasting it to the EDGAR 'J. STEWART, "OF sHEBoYGAN, Wisconsin [PACKING FOR BOTTLES;
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 381,290, dated April 17, 1888 Application filed November 10, 1887. Serial No. 254.799. (No model.) Q i of the-jackets is facilitated, because the edges,
extended edge pasted in betweenthe overlapping edges of the'other tube the manufacture, I r
UNITED STATES PATENT l, OFFICE; f f j when gummed, are pressed togetherby a single j operation and by one contrivance, whereas if the said edgeweresecured' to any other part Y of the tube a separate device would be required .6 4
- v o i to pressit to place. 4 r V The improvement will be more fully here-' inafter described, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, in which Figure .l is a perspective view of a bottle wrapper or jacket embodying myinvention';
Fig. 2, a perspective-view of a modified form, and Fig. 3a cross section entire line X X of I Fig. 1.
The wrapper or jacket, composed-of aniinne'r tube, A, and an outer tube, B, of flexible ma-' terial, has the space between the two tubes .filled with soft packing (L -such as excelsior.
Thepacking is held betweehthe u es y a suitable adhesive medium applied to the opposing sides or'walls of the tubes. The top and bottom edges of the jacket may be straight, as
shown in Fi-g.'l,'or scalloped, as shown in Fig.
'2. The tubes are formed of soft flexible sheet material-snakes paper or -cl0thwhich iscut tothe desired size and shape. The edges offthe sheet are then overlapped andare fastened by pasting. I
I do not restrict myself to the the sheets together.
The edge of one of the tubes, as theedge 6,
brought together and and pastes. the edges of particular l manner of forming these wrappersor jackets, J
' the two sheets, places the is extended and pasted to the opposite tube to more firmly secure the two tubes together. To
' expedite theformation of the wrappers orjackets, the extended edge I) is pasted iu between the overlapping edges of the outer tube, B, as n I shown-most clearly in Fig. 3.
It will beunderstood that the jacket o'rwrap i per will adapt itself to the shape of the article to which itis applied, being soft and flexible. Having thus described'my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure byLetters Patent,
'e herein shown and describedjacket or wrapper,con1posed of an inner and an outer being extended and secured between the overtube of flexible material, having the edges overlapping edges of the other tube, and the packlapped and secured together, the edge of one ing placed between the two tubes, substantially tube being extended and secured to the oppoas described, for the purpose specified.
5 site tube, and the packing material placed be- In testimony whereof I aflix my signaturein r5 tween the two tubes, substantially as depresence of two witnesses. scribed. EDGAR J. STEWART.
2. A wrapper or jacket composed of an Witnesses: outer and an inner tube, each tube having A. O. PRESCOTT,
IO overlapping edges, and the edge of one tube R. W. BILLETT.
