MATERIAL FOR PACKINGBOTTLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 301,250, dated July 1, 1884.

To all whom it nuty concern.-
Be it known that I, OLIVER LONG, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Material for Packing Bottles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention consists in the formation of a packing material for bottles by attaching to single sheets of paper tubes of paper filled with straw or hay, the tubes being placed in rows, the whole forming a wrapper, which is placed around the bottles, and perfectly protects them from contact with each other and with the case in which they are packed. The tubes containing the hay or straw may be made by spirally winding a strip of paperaround the stalks of the hay or straw, or by simply enveloping the hay or straw with a single wrapper. 7

Fig. 5 shows the tubes made by simply enveloping the stalks of hay or straw in a single paper wrapper, and Fig. Gshows the tubes made by winding a strip of paper diagonally around the stalks of hay or straw.
By the use of my invention the bottle is perfectly protected along the sides and lines of contact with adjacent surfaces. The packing material is light, and is sufficiently stiff to re tain its form. It is very clean, there being no litter or dirt resulting from its use, and it is little'affected by moisture. When used in the shape of cylindrical envelopes, as shown in the drawings, a great saving is effected, as the envelopes can be repeatedly used, and the materials are cheap.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is As an article of manufacture, a packing material for bottles, composed of tubes of paper filled with hay or straw, which are attached to single sheets of paper, substantially in the manner set forth, and for the purpose specified.
