To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that we, JOHN B. GOODWIN and GEORGE GOODWIN, both, of Providence, in the v Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding and Swinging Gates, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference-being had to t-he accompanying drawings, forming part of this` ro specification. The objects of our invention are to simplify I 5 the construction and operation of this class of .gates and to render the same more efficient in' their functions and neater in appearance.
To the aforesaid purposes our invention consists in the various constructions, arrange# c ments, and combinations-of the several parts of the gate, as will behereinafterI fully de.-
scribed and claimed.

The lazy-tong gate 28 1s comPOlSed of the cross-'rods 29, which are pivoted to each other v and to the various parts of the structure by the pivot-studs 30. The gate is hinged to the hinge-bar by means of the hinge-sleeves 31, which are formed with the'L-shaped guideslots 32 for receiving the guide-pin 33, which is fixed in the hinge-bar 22, and which are provided with the horizontally projecting guide-braees34, having the horizontal slots 35 lying opposite each other in alignment, each sleeve having two such guide-braces extending parallel,as shown in Fig. 4.
In the slots 35 of the guidebraces work the pivotstuds 30 of thejoints of the crossrods 29, while others of the pivot-studs 30 are pivoted to the solid portions of the braces 34 at points between the slots 35 and the body of the Y sleeve.
Theguideslot 32 of the .lowest hinge-sleeve runs horizontally for about one-quarter the circumference of the sleeve. ,The guide-pin 33 holds this sleeve from vertical movement, but permits it to perform a quarter-turn. As the gate is folded in toward the hinge-bar, all the sleeves except the lowest one will be forced upward on the hinge-bar, and the pivot-studs 30, which work in the slots 35 of the guidebraces 34, will slide along the length of the slots. By this time the guide-pins 33 have reached the lower branch of the L-shaped slot 32, and the entire folded gate may then be swung through the quadrant on the hinge-bar, in an evident manner, and the guide-pins 32 will serve to hold the gate collapsed while swung aside.
The sleeves 31 are limited in their downward movement by the collars 36, fixed upon the hinge-bar 22, as clearly indicated in Figs. 2 and 11; and hence these collars will act to prevent the gate from being projected beyond a certain limit, since the sleeves must descend as the gate is extended or projected.
In the construction shown in Fig. 12 the sleeves below the two uppervones are held fastl on the hinge-bar 22, which is rotatable, and in the case ofthe non-sliding hinge-sleeves the guide-slot 35 ofthe guide-brace 34 has to be arranged vertically to allow the necessary upward movement of the guide-pin 30 working therein.
In Figs. 8, 9, 11, 16, 18, 19, and 20 we have shown kother guiding means for the hingesleeves 31, the same consisting in a guide-rib, 37, fixed to the hinge-bar, and aguide-groove, 38, formed in the sleeve. This guide-groove 38 may run longitudinally of the sleeve, so that the sleeve may be slid over and clear of the rib, and may then be given a quarter-turn, and rest with its lower edge against the upper end of the rib, or theguide-groove 38 may be L-shaped, as shown in Figs. 8 and 11. so that after the sleeve has been slid upward till the lower branch of the L-shaped groove comes to the upper end of the rib the sleeve may be given a quarter-turn, andthe upper face of the lower branch of the groove will rest upon the upper end of the guide-rib, and thus hold the sleeve in elevated position.
Thebrace-bar consistsin an upper member, 39, and a lower member, 40, which are each formed with the vertical slots 4l,and this twopart bar is pivoted vertically to the locking side ot' the gate by means of the pivot-studs 30 of the cross-rods working in the slots 41 of the brace-bar.. The purpose of the transversely-divided braeebar is to allow the same to span overthe hand-rail 42 on the ear, so as to permit of the gate'being projected in nearer to the car than would be the case with a onepiece brace-bar, which would strike the handrail and prevent the further extension of the gate.
To the head of the brace-bar member 39 is pivoted the operating-lever 43, the other end of which is hinged to the brace or projection 34 on the upper hinge sleeve, 3l, by means of bolt 44, which is provided with a knob, 45, designed to be grasped and elevated by the operator in folding the gate. It will now be undelstood that as ythe knob 45 is elevated thel operating-lever will be moved upward by the end adjacent the knob, and all the hingesleeves will be slid upward, except the lowest one,which being held against vertical movement will cause the basal line of the gate to move in and out horizontally as the gate is folded and projected. The brace-bar 39 40 will move in parallel with 'the hinge-bar, ,and
the pivot-studs will slide in the slots 41. As the gate is folded, the same is increased in height, but of course cannot lengthen downwardly, because of the basal hinge-point being held stationary against vertical play.
The gate is held locked in projected position by means of one of the cross-rods `29 being formed with a latch head, 46,whieh snaps into thelateh-soeket 47, formed on the under side ofthe brace or projection 34, formed on the upper hinge-sleeve, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 8. To release the latch in folding the gate,the operator grasps the cross-rod having thelatch-head and moves it slightly ont of the vertical plane, as will be understood from Fig. 3.
To assist the gate in the operations of extending the same and swinging it through the quadrant when folded, we provide the spring 48,which encircles the hinge-bar, and which is normally under torsional tension when the gate is in extended position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. This spring is secured by its upper end to the fixed collar 49, which is provided with the cam projection 50, over which the lower notched edge of the upper hinge-sleeve, 31, turns, the lower end of the spring being attached to the upper end of the turnable sleeve 31. The space between the fixed collar 49 and the subjacent sliding sleeve 3l is housed by the easing or shell 51, which is xed tothe collar 49 by the rivet 52, and the sleeve is adapted to move up and down and to turn within the casing. As the gate is folded and the sleeve 31 slides up, the spring 48 is compressed against its fixed collar 49, and this tension of course tends to project or extend the IIO 381,066- y o .Y I

In this instance we do not support the hinge-bar from the'car-hood, butshorten the bar and support it'bythe guardlrail 54 of the car-platform.
In Figs.8 and 9V we'show means for holding the 'upper hinge sleeve and its attached oper ating-lever 43 -in locked position at the upward anddownwardllrnits of movement. This sleeve is provided with a set-screw, 54, which is held in the perforation 55 inthe sleeve ofv the pin 56, and the foot of the screw takesinto theopening 57, formed in the hinge-bar, and thereby holds the sleeve locked in 'elevated position, as shownvr in broken lines in Fig. 8., This screw mayalso serve to lock the gate when extended, by virtue of the eye 58, formedV in the hinge-bar at the lowest limit of downward movement Vof the sleeve 31, as shown'clearly in Fig. 9,whichl is'a section online 9 9 invFig. 8;

In the construction shown in Figs. 13 and 14 the upper hinge-sleeve, 31, has the guide-brace 34 formed with slot 35, in which slides the'flxed stud y62, which is'mounted on the operating.
lever 43, the inner end of which is pivoted to the upright arm 63, formedon the turnable sleeve 31, having the guide-groove 32 and pin 33.- The lever-43 inthis construction -is not hinged tothe vertical brace-barat its outer end, but is only hinged at its inner end to the upright arm 63, and forms merely a 'nishing# rail for the topofthe gate when'the latter is extended. The elevation of the lever does not effect the foldingfof theV gate.

The combination, as hereinbefore set forth, with the hinge-bar and thc lazy-tong gate, of a set of sliding hinge-sleeves mounted on the hinge-bar and provided with lateral guide braces or lugs to which the several points of the gate are pivoted, substantially as and for the purpose herein described. v
4. The combination, as hereinbefore Vset forth, with the hinge-bar and the lazy-tong gate, of the set of slidinghinge-sleeves mounted on the hinge-bar and provided with theguidebraces to which the gate is pivoted, the lowest sleeve held against vertical movement and the other sleeves provided with stops to limit the downward movement thereof, substantially as described.

The combination, as hereinbefore set forth, with the hinge bar and the lazy-tong gate,of the set ofsliding hinge-sleeves mounted on the hingebar and provided with guide braces or lugs to which the gate is hinged by its respective points, such hingesleeves capable of sliding vertically and of turning in the horizontal, and provided with guiding devices mounted on the hinge-bar, substantially asand for the purpose herein described.
6. The combination, as hereinbefore set forth, with the'hinge-bar and the lazy-tong gate, of the set of sliding and turning hingesleeves mounted ou the hinge-bar and provided with slotted guide braces or lugs to which the several points of the gate are connected by hinge-pins slidingin the slots of the guide-braces, substantially as described.
7. The combination, as hereinbefore set forth,with the hinge-bar and the slidinghingesleeves mounted thereon and the lazy-tong gate having its rods pivoted to the guidebraces on such sleeves, of the vertical bracebar located at the locking side of the ga-te and to which the rods of the gate are pivoted, the upper hinge-sleeve sliding on the hinge-bar, and the operating-lever hinged intermediate the said upper hinge-sleeve andthe vertical brace-bar, whereby the elevation and depression of the end of the operating-lever hinged to said sleeve may accordingly fold and pro- 5o ject the gate, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
8. The combination, as hereinbefore set forth, with the hinge-barandthesliding hingesleeves sliding thereon, the gate composed of` pivoted rods of the lazy-tong order, of the upper sleeve sliding on the hinge-bar and having a projection or lug formed with a latchsocket, the upper end of one of the pivoted rods of the gate provided with a latch which is adapted to lock in the latch-socket when the gate is extended, substantially as described.
9. The combination, as hereinbefore set forth, with the hinge-bar and the lazy-tong gate, of the sliding hinge-sleeves mounted on the hinge-bar and provided with the lateral guide-braces, the L-shaped guide-slots formed in the sleeves, and the fixed guide-studs on the hinge-bar taking through said slots, and the stops fixed on the hinge-bar to limit the downward movement of the sleeves, the rods of the said gate pivoted to the guide-bracesl on the sleeves, substantially as and for the purpose herein described. e
10. The combination, as hereinbefore set forth, with the hinge-bar, the sliding hingesleeves mounted thereon and provided with the guidebraces, and the lazy-tong gate pivoted to `guide-braces, and the lazy-tong gate pivoted to the guide-braces, of the coil-spring encircling the hinge-bar and having one end thereof attached to one of the sleeves, a collar fixed to the hinge-bar and the other end of the said spring secured thereto, and the casing fixed to the collar and receiving the end of the sleeve to which the spring is attached, substantially as and for the purposeherein described.
12. The combination, as hereinbefore set forth, with the hinge-bar for the gate secured at its foot, of the bracket for receiving the head of the hinge-bar, which is adjustably mounted in the bracket, substantallyas described. Y
13. In a gate of the class described, the combination, with the hinge-bar for the gate, kof a sliding sleeve mounted on the bar and connections intermediate the sleeve and the gate, a set-screw mounted on said sleeve,and asocket on the hinge-bar to receive the foot of said screw to lock the slee\'e in fixed position thereon, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
14. The combination, as hereinbefore set forth, with the hinge-bar provided with the longitudinal guiding-ribs, of the sliding hingesleeves mounted on the hinge-bar and formed with guide-grooves to receive the guide-ribs, substantially as described.
15. The combination, as hereinbefore set forth, with thelazy-tong gate, of thehinge-bar provided with guide-ribs, the sliding hingesleeves mounted on the hinge-bar and each formed with a longitudinal and a transverse guide-groove to receive the guide-ribs, the sleeves provided with guide-braces and the gate pivoted to such braces, the sleeves adapted to slide over the guide-ribs and then to be turned on the hinge-bar, and the guide-ribs coacting with the transverse guide-grooves of the sleeves as stops against vertical descent of the sleeves when the sleeves are turned on the hinge-bar, substantially as described.

The combination, with the upper section, 64, and the lower section, 69, provided with the clutch-faces 65 and 70, respectively, of the core 68, and the stem 72 for supporting the core, the spring 71 and the casing 73, the guide-slot 66, formed in the upper section, 64, and the guide-pin 67, fixed tothe core, the lifting-pin 74, fixed to the lower section, 69, and the sliding sleeve 31, provided with the L-shaped slot 32 for engaging with pin 74, the said sleeve provided with guiding means,sub stantially as and for'the purpose herein described.
37. The combination, with the hinge-bar 22, the sliding hinge-sleeves 3l, mounted thereon and provided with the guide-braces 34, the lazy-tong gate 28, pivoted to said guide-braces, 0f the forked operating-lever 43, provided with the slot 77 and hinged to the gate and to the forked guide-brace 34 of the uppermost hinge-sleeve 31, substantially as described.
