UMBRELLA-HANGER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 380,996, dated April 10, 1888.

Application filed January 12, 1888. Serial No. 260,533.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Jesse A. CRANDALL, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrella-Hangers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 represents a side view of my improved carriage-umbrella adjustable hanger and fastener. Fig. 2 is a detail central longitudinal sectional view of the same.- Fig. 3 is a vertical cross sectional view thereof.

' This invention is an improvement in umbrella or parasol hangers and fasteners, and is especially designed for use on baby-carriages,

and by means of which the parasol can be hung and set at any angle or position desired. To these ends the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts plates, D D, between which at opposite endsv are pivoted, respectively, a cam, E, at top, and the circular head f of a depending socketpiece, F, at bottom. In the opening in piece F is placed the top end of the parasol-stick, which is retained therein by a set-screw, G; or other convenient means of attaching the parasol thereto may be employed.

H h designate similar opposite clamp-blocks inserted between plates D D and engaging, respectively, by proper concaved faces with the cam E and head f, as shown, so that when the cam is properly turned block H will be forced inward toward block it.

the cam E is properly turned, as shown. 0am E is provided with a handle-piece, e, by which it is operated. Now, it will be observed'that when cam E is turned to force block H inward or toward block h block H will engage rod A, causing block h to also engage it, and thereby clamping the rod. At the same timethe block h, seating itself upon the head f of socketpiece F, binds the latter on its pivots, so that it will not turn, and if the socket-piece be turned to an angle with plates D before the cam turns it will be held in such position after the cam is tightened, thus permitting the setting of the parasol at different angles in the line of rod A, and by varyingthe position of plates D D from the perpendicular the hanger and parasol can be set at varying inclinations in a line at right angles to the rod A. It will thus be observed that I can adjust the parasol in any position before setting the cam and retain it therein when so adjusted. When the cam is released, the block H It can separate sufficiently to permit the free passage of the rod A between them.

The essential feature of my invention is the cam for clamping upon the rod, and it will be obvious that the blocks H It might be omitted, the cam acting against the rod A direct, or that the socket-piece F might be formed integral with or rigidly connected to plates D D without departing from the spirit of my invention, and therefore I do not wish to limit myselfto the precise construction of the hanger described. \Vhen used to clamp the rod on the carriage, as also shown in Fig. 1, I use a bracket-piece, I, as shown, which is secured to the carriage and has outstanding lugs z, corresponding to plates D, in which the cam and blocks H h are supported. I

Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-

1. In a hanger for parasols, the combination, with the supporting-rod A, of the connected side plates embracing said rod, and the cam E, pivoted between said plates, and the block H, interposed between said cam and rod A and concaved on its face for engagement with said cam and rod, substantially as and for, the purpose specified.

2. The hanger O, composed of side plates, D. D, cam E, and blocks H h, constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose described.

3. The combination, with red A, of the hanger O thereon, composed of plates D D, the socket-piece F, pivoted between the said plates and having circular head f, the cam E, pivoted between the upper ends of said plates, having :0 handle 6, and the clamping-blocks H h, engaging the cam and head f, respectively, substantially as and for the purpose described.
