The problems and difficulties presented by hickies are discussed in some detail in US. Pat. to James 0. Allen, No. 3,252,416, patented May 24, 1966.
A common method of removing hickies is through the use of a hickey roll disposed adjacent the image area of the plate cylinder. These rollers are covered with a material having a short nap which will whisk the hickies away from the plate. Leather hides sewn about the roller core are oftentimes utilized. However,
leather hides are expensive and ditficult to clean. The leather must be removed periodically and handwashed. If it is not kept clean, its effectiveness drops off quickly and can damage the plate. Another prior art method is theuse of a Corfam material which is helically wrapped about the core of the roller and secured thereto by an adhesive. The Corfam is ground to the specified diameter, leaving a nap which is capable of removing hickies. One advantage of this product is that the roll can be washed without removing it from the core. The Corfam rollers, after grinding, are more uniformly round than the leather rollers but still cannot be cleaned automatically. Again, if the Corfam is not given a great amount of care, it will lose its effectiveness.-
A principal objective of this invention is to provide a roller which overcomes many of the above-identified difficulties and provides a long-life roller to overcome the hickey problem.
Another important objective of this invention is to provide a durable roller with superior removing characteristics which can be automatically resurfaced by grinding.
A further objective of the invention is to provide a hickey roller which can be washed automatically.
Another important objective of this invention is to provide a method of making a hickey roller of the above-mentioned type. These and other objects of the invention will become more-apparent to those skilled in the art by reference to the following detailed description when viewed in light of the accompanying drawings wherein:
FIG. 1 is a perspective of the hickey roll of this invention;
of FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is a perspective showing the taping operation; and
FIG. 4 is a showing of aroll in cross-section after vulcanization and a section of which has been ground.
Referring now to the drawings wherein like numerals indicate like parts, the numeral 10 indicates the hickey roll of this invention. The roll is comprised of .a metal core or roller 12 wrapped by a layer of fiber-rubber mixture 14a and rubber 14b. As'seen in FIG. 2, the
composition of the layer 14a is comprised of a-nitrile PVC blended rubber with 30 parts of nylon flock, the fibe r 's' ot whiehir e lndicated by the numerals 16. The fibers 16 are approxmately one-half inch in length and the layer is a mixture of 30 parts flock in the nitrile PVC rubber.
The drawings show the flock is evenly distributed. In practice it has also been found that the outer boundaries of the roll can contain from to 50 parts flock with the middle portion of 20 to 40 parts thereof. Additionally in practices it has been found that flock ranging from 6 to 53 denier in the outer boundaries of the roll and from to 30 denier in the middle boundaries has been found desirable.
In manufacturing the layer 14a, the above-mentioned flock is thoroughly mixed with the rubber and made into sheets. The width of the sheets are equal to or an even fraction of the longitudinal length of roll 12. The length of the sheet is such to accomplish building plies to a one-half inch thickness per side on the roll. The
layer. 14a is disposed over the layer 14b which is in turn disposed on the core 12 and wrapped with a polypropylene or cotton tape 18 as shown in FIG. 2. Both of the layers 14a and 14b are uncured at this stage. After taping is completed and the roller ends covered, the unit is subjected to steam vulcanization temperatures until the rubber is cured. The vulcanization. creates a self-adhering layer between the interface 20 of the roller 12 and the layer 14. The cured unit is removed from the vulcanizing chamber, leaving a fiberous layer with therefrom. Roller life is thereby extended for two or FIG. 2 is a partial cross-section along the lines 2-2 I a half-inch thickness. This thickness is dressed or ground to a thickness of approximately one-fourth inch as shown in FIG. 4. When so ground, the fibers 16 will protrude in form of a nap, as seen in FIGS. 1, 2 and 4. The abrading is accomplished with a conventional Carborundum wheel mounted on a lathe in the usual fashion. The thickness of layer 14b is determined or varied in accordance with the final diameter desired for the finished roll.
When the roller is so dressed, it is placed in conventional printing press machines adjacent the plate cylinder for hickey removing purposes. The nylon and rubber are very resistant to water and the usual cleaning compositions used therewith. Because of this, the rollers can be cleaned via in-press wash-up procedures.
Another advantage of this roll is when the protruding fibers become worn, an additional layer can be ground three times that normally expected.
In general manner, while there has been disclosed effective and efficient embodiments of the invention, it should be well understood that the invention is not limited to such embodiments, as there might be changes made in the arrangement, disposition, and form of the parts without departing from the principle 'of the present invention as comprehended within the scope of the accompanying claims.
