BENJAMIN SCARLES, OF CLINTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE CLINTON \VIRE CLOTH COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
WIRE TWISTING AND WINDING MECHANISM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 380,667, dated April 3, 1888.
Application filed Drcenlber 3, 1886. Serial No. 220,568.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN SOARLES, of Clinton, county of Worcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Wire Twisting and lVinding Mechanism, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object to provide a machine whereby wires taken from spools or bobbins may be twisted together and wound upon suitable reels or spools.
In the invention herein described two sets of wires are twisted together simultaneously and led from the twisting mechanism in opposite directions to be wound upon two spools or bobbins, both spools or bobbins being driven by the same shaft, thus saving space and simplifying the same.
Figure 1 in top or plan view represents a compound twisting and winding machine embodying my invention, the shaft of one of the spindles carrying one of the spools or reels being in section, the spool or reel being removed. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of a machine embodying my invention. Fig. 3 is a partial section of Fig. 2 in the line 00 m, looking to the left, chiefly to show one side of the pulley carrying the bobbins or cops containing the wire to be twisted; and Fig. 4. is a longitudinal section of part of the twisting-spindle at one end.
The frame-work A has bearings a to support the main shaft a, having usual fast and loose pulleys to be acted upon by a belt, a to rotate the said shaft. The shaft a has fast upon it a toothed gear, a which engages a pinion, a fast upon one end of the spindle 12, outside its bearing 1), depending from the crossbars I)". The spindle b is slotted transversely near each end at the rear of its bearing, as at 2, and the extremity of the spindle is bored, as at 3, to intersect the slot 2, the said slot and bore forming a passage through the spindle for the wires to be twisted, the said wires being delivered beyond or outside of the bear ings therefor. The spindle b, near the middle of its length, is provided with a pulley, d,
which, at each side, has erected upon it studs (No model.)
(1 01 the studs (2' receiving bobbins or cops d containing the wires 10 to be twisted together, the said wires in their passage from the said bobbins or cops to the said spindle passing about conical guide-rolls d", mounted loosely upon the studs d and also passing partially around other guide'rolls, e, mounted loosely upon screw-studs e, screwed into a collar, 6 attached to the spindle b, the said. conical guide-rolls d and the rolls 0 permitting the wires to pass from the bobbins or cops holding them to the spindle without the formation of bends therein, and also serving, by their shape, to regulate the tension.
As herein shown, the pulley (Z has at each side two studs, d, to carry two bobbins having wires w, the said wires being twisted to gether and delivered from the end of the spindle, the said twisted wires being wound upon spools 20, mounted upon spindles 7, having bearings f, the said spindles having each an attached worm-gear, g, which is engaged by a worm, 9', both of the said worms being, as herein shown, attached to one and the same shaft, g, the latter having a pulley, g, which receives upon it the belt 9*, which derives its movement from the pulley d, fast on the shaft 1).
From the foregoing it will be seen that two wires at each side of the pulley d are twisted together and simultaneously wound upon spools at each end of the frame.
It is obvious that the pulley (2 may be provided with two or any greater number of studs to receive two or a greater number of bobbins or cops, according to the number of wires which it is desired to retain in the twisted wire.
I claim- 1. In a wire-twisting machine, a spindle, Z), a pulley thereon provided at each side with means to support two or more bobbins or cops, and guide-rolls d", the bobbins or cops and the guide-rolls and the said spindle having parallel axes of rotation, combined with two spin dles and with means to rotate the said spindles to effect the winding of the twisted wires coming from each end of the spindle 1) upon suitable spools, substantially as described.
2. The spindle 12, its attached pulley having at each side two or more studs to support two or more bobbins, guide-rolls about which to pass the wires carried by the said bobbins or cops on their passage into and from the said spindle, and means to rotate the spindle b,con1- bined with the shaft 9 means to drive it, worms 9 thereon, worm-gear, and spindles f, the combination being and operating substantially as described, whereby two sets of wires may be simultaneously twisted and wound 10 upon spools, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
BENJAMIN SOARLES. Witnesses:
BURT CHELLIS, JOHN W. FORRESTER.
