Field of the Invention This invention relates generally to locking devices and more particularly to an improved locking bar for a door.
2. Description of the Prior Art In view of the recent increase in the crime rate, people are becoming much more security conscious and are actively seeking means for protecting their household. Substantial progress has been made in the lock art so as to make locks virtually tamper proof. However, a skilled burglar can still manage to spring the bolt of the lock by placing a tool such as a screw driver or a pry bar in the space between the door and the door frame and force the jamb away from the bolt. In'this manner even the most sophisticated, pick-proof lock can be overcome.
SUUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present invention overcomes the aforementioned shortcomings in the prior art by directly tying the door to the door frame so that the door cannot be pried open. The present invention provides a bar which may, in one embodiment, be mounted on the hinge of the door so as to extend thereacross and over the opposite door frame. A conventional lock is used having a cross pin on the inside of the room at the end of the lock opposite the cylinder. By turning the key of the lock the cross pin is rotated 90 engages and securely retains the locking bar. With the present invention, the door may be securely locked from the outside and the door is tied directly to the frame. At night a latch may be used on the inside of the room to internally secure the bar to the door. Optionally, a hinge may be provided in the bar and means, such as a magnet,.may be used to secure the bar in the folded condition.
Accordingly, it is an object of the present invention to provide an improved locking assembly for a door.
Another object of the present invention is to provide an improved locking assembly for a door, as described above, that ties the door directly to the frame thereof.
A different object of the present invention is to provide an improved door locking assembly, as described 7 above, that may be placed in the operative position from the outside of the room.
A further object of the present invention is to provide latch means for the improved door locking assembly, the latch means being operable inside the room.
Two features of the present invention are that the bar comprising the door locking assembly may be folded when not in use and also retained in the folded condition.
These and other objects features and advantages of the invention will, in part, be pointed outwith particularity, and will, in part, become obvious from the following more detailed description of the invention, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, which forms an integral part thereof.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING In the various figures of the drawing, like reference characters designate like parts. In the drawing:
taken along line 3-3 of FIG. 1;
FIG. 4 is a fragmentary sectional elevational view taken along line 44 of FIG. 1;
FIG. 5 is a fragmentary elevational view schematically illustrating an alternative embodiment of the present invention;
FIG. 6 is a fragmentary elevational view illustrating an alternative arrangement of the present invention; and
FIG. 7 is a fragmentary plan view illustrating an ad justable feature of this invention.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Referring now to FIG. 1 there is shown one embodiment of the door locking assembly 10 comprising the present invention. The locking assembly I0 includes, as shown in FIG. 2, an elongated, metallic bar 12 having a shouldered pin 14 formed integrally with one end thereof. A reduced diameter 14a of the shouldered pin 14 is used to replace the hinge pin in one of the hinges I-I shown in FIG. 1. The other two hinges I-I' need not be altered. Thus, as shown in FIG. 1, when the locking assembly 10 is in place, it spans the door D from one vertical frame member F to the other vertical frame member F. For purposes to be described hereinafter, the bar 12 is also provided with a substantially circular opening 16 therethrough having a pair of opposed and oppositely extending slots 18 in communication with the circular opening 16. Still another rectangular opening 20 is provided adjacent a block 22 that houses an axially'movable pin 24.
As shown in FIG. 3, a suitably sized and shaped hole 26 is drilled in the door D in alignment with the opening 16 in the bar 12 in order to accommodate a lock cylinder 28. A sleeve 30 is positioned within the hole 26 about the cylinder 28 and is secured to the door D by means of a plate 32 and by suitable fasteners such as screws 34. Conventional tie bolts 38 and an axially extending pin 40 complete the lock. A cross pin 42 is suitably secured in the pin 40 at the inner end thereof.
ally so as to enter the opening 44a in the eye bolt 44.
ally movable pin 24 is normally biased to the left and includes a hole 21 that is adapted to receive the pin of the night latch 23. Thus, when the cross pin 42 is in the horizontal position the left-hand end of the pin 24 will be in abutment therewith and will thus prevent the rotation of the lock cylinder until such time as the night latch 23 is raised.
Turning now to FIG. 5 there is shown an alternative mounting arrangement for the bar 12 comprising the present invention. Instead of removing one of the hinge pins H as described hereinabove, a plate 50 is secured to the frame F by means of fasteners such as screws 52. The plate 50 is provided with a tubular portion or socket 55 that is sized so as to accommodate the reduced diameter section 14a of the bar 12.
An alternative embodimet of the present invention is also disclosed in FIG. 6. In the first described embodiment the cylinder 28 was positioned in the door D, in alignment with the opening 16, and the eye-bolt 44 was located in the frame F, in alignment with the rectangular opening 20. The openings 16' and 18' are again formed in the bar 12' in alignment with the axially extending pin 40 and the cross'pin 42 that are part of the lock assembly but in the second embodiment the lock assembly is mounted in the frame F The block 22 is once again mounted on the bar 12' to the left of the cross pin 42 as shown in FIG. 6'and is used as a night latch to secure the bar 12' internally in the manner described hereinbefore. The eyse bolt 44 and the rectangular slot is thereby eliminated. In addition, the cross pin 42' may be made hollow to receive the axially movable pin 24.
Optional features of the present invention may include a hinge 54 dividing the abar 12 into sections 12a and 12b as shown in FIG. 1. This construction permits the bar 12 to be folded when not in used. With the folding construction it is desirable to include some means for retaining the bar sectionsl2a and 12b in the folded condition and for this purpose a magnet 56 is shown mounted on bar section 1212 in FIG. 1. It will be understood that, in the folded condition, the magnet 56 will releasably secure the bar section 12a.
Still another feature of this invention is shown in FIG. 7. In order to accommodate doors of different widths the bar 60 is made in two sections 62 and 64 each of which have teeth, 66 and 68, respectively, that are in opposition to each other. The bar section 62 is provided with a tapped hole 70 and the bar section 64 is provided with an elongated slot 72 both of which receive a bolt 74. Other equivalent bar lengthening and shortening means may be used within the scope of the invention.
There has been disclosed heretofore the best embodi- I ment of the invention presently contemplated. However, it is to be understood that various changes and modifications may be made thereto without departing from the spirit of the invention.
