Abstract
A collecting main for a coke oven battery has a longitudinally extending internal baffle so that clear liquor and dirty liquor can be separately collected in the same collecting main.

CROSS TO RELATED APPLICATION This application is a continuation-in-part application Ser. No. 212,479, filed Dec. 27, 1971, now abandoned.
BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION In the collecting main of a coke oven battery there is a baflle that is coextensive with the main and that is so constructed and arranged that dirty flushing liquor collects on one side of the bafile and clean flushing liquor collects on the opposite side when the flushing liquor seal valve pivots from fully open to fully closed positions. Means is provided to remove the dirty flushing liquor from the collecting main.
For a further understanding of the invention and for features and advantages thereof, reference may be made to the following description and the drawing which illustrates a preferred embodiment of equipment in accordance with the invention.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING In the drawing:
FIG. 1 illustrates schematically an improved coke oven collecting main in accordance with the invention;

FIG. 3 is similar to FIG. 1 and shows a modified apparatus in accordance with the invention; and
FIG. 4 is a view along line IV-IV of 'FIG. 3.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION FIG. 1 illustrates schematically a transverse section of a collecting main 11 for a coke oven battery 13, and the transverse section shows a conventional ascension pipe 15, ascension pipe elbow 17 and a suction main 1'9.
Within the collecting main 11 there is a vertically arranged bafile plate 21 that is mounted to the bottom of the collecting main 11 and that extends throughout the entire length of the collecting main 11. It will be noted that the top portion of the baffle plate 21 is curved slightly toward a conventional liquor seal valve 23 that is pivotally mounted, as at 25, to the collecting main 11. The outwardly extending'edge 27 of the liquor seal valve in one position is closely adjacent the top curved edge 29 of the bafiie plate 21, as shown in solid lines in the drawing.
The liquor seal valve 23 is operated externally by a lever arm 31 which extends toward the right as viewed in FIG. 1, and which is actuated manually. The lever arm 31 is counterweighed in a conventional manner and is held in three distinct positions; two being indicated by phantom outlines and one by solid lines. The lever is held in position by a latch plate 33, shown in FIG. 2. The latch plate 33 includes a U-shaped flat bar member 35 that is welded to the ascension pipe about where shown in FIG. 1. To the latch plate flat bar 35 is fixed 3,804,721 Patented Apr. 16, 1974 "ice small angle members 37. These angle members 37 are shaped to receive the lever arm 31 and hold it in position, as is suggested by 'FIG. 2 'where the lever arm 31 is shown in one of the hold positions.
The suction main 19 is located about at the mid-length point of the coke oven battery collecting main 11, and in the vicinity of the suction main 19 there is a fluids collecting sump 39 that is in fluid communication with the collecting main 11. Specifically, the collecting sump 39 communicates only with the right side portion 41 of the collecting main 11, as viewed in FIG. 1. The collecting sump 39 is flange-connected as at 43, to a conduit 45, extending generally parallel to the suction main 19, by means of which fluid is removed from the sump 19.
FIGS. 3 and 4 illustrate schematically a transverse section of a modified collecting main 51 for a coke oven battery 53 which is provided with a conventional ascen sion pipe 55, ascension pipe elbow 57 and a suction main Within the collecting main 51 there-is a vertically arranged bafile plate 61 that is fixed to the bottom of the collecting main 51 and that extends throughout the length of the collecting main 51.
In contrast to the vertically arranged bafile 21 that has a curved top edge 29, the baffle plate 51 has no curved top edge, but it is straight, as shown in FIG. 3.
'Within the collecting main 51 there is also a liquor seal valve 63, that is pivotally mounted to a shaft 65 journaled in an extension unit 66 of the ascension pipe elbow 57. The bottom 67 of the liquor seal valve 63 is arcuate as shown so that as the valve 63 pivots about an axis through the pivot 65, there is only a very small space between the liquor seal valve and the top edge of the bafile 61.
The liquor seal valve 63 is suspended from the pivot by a pair of arms 69, 71 and an actuating arm 73 is fitted to the end of shaft 65. The arm 73 is one link in a system for pivoting the liquor seal valve 63, which system includes links 75, 77 and a lever 79 that is pivotally mounted at 81 to a support 83 on the collecting main 51. The lever 79 is similar to the lever 31 of FIG. 1 and it cooperates with a latch plate 85 that is similar to the latch plate 33 of FIG. 1.
Within the collecting main the batlle plate 61 forms two compartments 87, 89 which function in the same way that compartments 41, 47 function. In compartment 87 there is a clean out plug 91 and a water spray nozzle 93, both of which are mounted in the wall of the collecting main 51.
When a coke oven chamber is being charged with fresh coal, the liquor seal valves 23, 63 are fully open; that is to say, the liquor seal valves 23, 63 are in the position C shown in phantom outline in FIGS. 1 and 3. Then the actuating levers 31, 79 are in position C and they are latched in this position by interengagement with the latch plates 33, 85.
While the liquor seal valves 23, 63 are in position C, the flushing liquor and gases flowing in the ascension pipe elbows 17, 57 strike the liquor seal valves and they are di rectcd into compartment 87. In compartment 87, the gases are sprayed with water, or other suitable liquid, emerging from the spray nozzle 93 to further cool the gases. From the compartment 87, the dirty liquor which comprises the gases, the liquid, and the coal particles that are carried over from the coke oven chamber with the gases is removed from a collecting sump 95 and a conduit 97 that are similar to the collecting sump 39 and the conduit 45 of FIG. 1. The dirty liquor is thereafter treated to remove the coal particles and the gases and may then be recirculated in the system.
After the coke oven chamber is charged with coal, the liquor seal valves 23, 63 are pivoted to position B by mov- 3 ing the actuating lever arms 31, 79 and latching the arms in the latch plates 33, 85.
Now, then, clean flushing liquor, that fiows in the ascension pipe elbow, strikes the liquor seal valves in position B and cascades over the lip of the valve and flows into the compartments 47 and 89, respectively. This flushing liquor is clean and is removed from the collecting main along with the gases by way of the suction mains 19, 59, respectively, in a normal manner.
When the coke oven chamber is dampered off, the liquor seal valves 23, 63 are in the position A; being held-in that position by the latch plates 33, 85, respectively. The flushing liquor forms a liquid seal, with the lower end portion of the elbow 17, 66 being submerged beneath the flushing liquor in the valves 23, 63.
From the foregoing description of two embodiments of the invention, those skilled in the art should recognize many important features and advantages of it, among which the following are particularly significant:
That the dirty flushing liquor is separated from the clean flushing liquor within the collecting main, thereby eliminating costly equipment outside of the coke oven battery to accomplish this work;
That separating the dirty from the clean flushing liquor is economically advantageous and permits recycling of the clean liquor quicker and at less than is, presently possible; and
That a collecting main in accordance with the invention, when pipeline charging is used to charge coal into coking chambers, is particularly advantageous because greater quantities of dry, finely-divided coal enter the collecting main through the ascension pipe and elbow, and the apparatus of the invention is particularly effective and efficient in separating the dirty flushing liquor from the clear flushing liquor.
Although the invention has been described herein with a certain degree of particularity, it is understood that the present disclosure has been made only as an example and that the scope of the invention is defined by what is hereinafter claimed.
What is claimed is: v
1. In a coke oven battery having coking chambers, to each one of which is connected an ascension pipeand elbow that communicates with. a gas collecting main, having an internal flushing liquor seal valve, and having a suction main communicating with said gas collecting main, the improvement comprising:
(a) an elongate baflie mounted within said gascollecting main that forms two liquorand-gas collecting zones within said collecting main, and
(b) means for pivoting each one of said (liquor seal valves, of such a nature that each valve,'-when pivoted to a first position, coactswithlsaid'baffie and diverts flushing liquor and gases from said elbow into one of said two collecting zones, and that each valve, when pivoted to a second position, coacts with P said bafiie and diverts flushing liquor and gases from said elbow into the other one of said two collecting zones, and that each such valve when pivoted to a third position retains flushing liquor and seals said elbow against gas fiowin g therefrom.
2. The invention of claim 1 including:
(a) means for removing liquor and gases said collecting zone,
from each 3. The invention of claim 2 wherein:
. -(a) said/means includes (i) a sump and conduit; that communicates with one collecting zone; and (ii) a conduit that communicates with the other collecting zone.
4. The invention of claim 3 wherein:
-(a) when said liquor seal valve is in the one position,
the flushing liquor is contaminated with coal particles; and
(b) said one collectingzone includes a spray nozzle from which liquid emerges to cool the gases in said collecting zone.
5. The invention of claim 1 including:
(a) means for securing said liquor seal valve in said one position; and
(b) means for securing said liquor seal valve in said other position.
,6. In a coke oven battery having coking chambers to each one of which is connected an ascension pipe and elbow that communicates with a gas collecting main having an internal flushing liquor seal valve that is pivotally mounted for cooperation with said elbow, and having a suction main communicating with said gas collecting main, the improvement comprising:
(a) an elongate balfie mounted within said gas collecting main that cooperates with said liquor seal valve and that forms two liquor and gas collecting zones within said collecting main;
(b) a sump and conduit communicating with one collecting zone for removing substance therefrom;
(c) a conduit communicating with the other collecting zone for removing substance therefrom;
(d) means for pivoting said liquor seal valve and so constructed that, when said valve is in one position coacting with said elongate baffie, flushing liquor and .rgases flowing in said elbow contact said valve and ,cascade therefrom-into one-collecting zone, and that, when said valve is in the other position coacting with said elongate baffie, flushing liquor and gases fiowing in said elbow contact said valve and cascade therefrom into the other collecting zone, and
(e) means for securing said liquor seal valve in the V respective one and the other positions.
7. The invention of claim 6 wherein:
(a) a surface of said liquor seal valve is continuously closely-adjacent an edge of said .bafile as said liquor seal valve pivots withinsaid collecting main.
