Description
GEORGE W'. EDWARDS, OF CHATHAM, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO JOHN M. BALDVIN, OF SAME PLACE.
CRHCOUPLING.
SPECPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 380,280I dated March 27, 1888.
Application iiled October 31, 1987. Serial No. 253,804. (No model.)
To LZ/'5 wiz-0772, it may concern:
Be it known that l, GEORGE W. EDWARDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chatham, in the county of Morris and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Couplings; and l do hereby declare' the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying draw ings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object ot this invention is to provide a car-coupling which may be operated from the outside oi' the car, thereby avoiding the necessity and danger of raising the couplingllink with the hand by inserting it between the bumpers, as is ordinarily done.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction of the draw-head and in the arrangements and combinations of parts 3o-operating therewith, substantially as will be hereinafter set forth, and finally embodied in the clauses ofthe claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each of the several figures, Figure l is sectional View of my improved draw-head, taken through lineX, Fig. 3, showing the couplingpin and a round crossbar or rivet, to which is secured the coupling-link. Fig. 2 is a front View of the drawhead, showing a device for raising the coupling-link into engagement with the next carin the train; and
Fig. 3 is u bottom view of the draw-head.
in said drawings, A indicates 'myimproi'ed draw-head, secured to the front of the car in the usual manner and having an open bottom, as A; I), the couplingpin attached to a lever and operated in the usual way. Said pin is adapted to slip through an opening in a tongue, c, protruding from the bottom side ofthe drawhead, as in Fig. 3, said tongue being perforated to receive the end of the coupling-pin Z1 as it descends in coupling the cars.
d is a round erossbar passing through and secured to the draw-head, on which swings a coupling-link, e, as indicated in Fig. 2. Said link is actuated by a device, f-such as a lever-also shown in Fig. 2, secured to the drawhead or ear or to a cross-bar, g, of wood or other suitable material, secured to the bottom of the car, as atg, Fig. 2, said lever being of metal and fulcruined, as at g2 and g3, to said crossbar g in said lever.
f represents arms with which to operate the lever, and f2 is another arm projecting from said lever, which aetuates the couplinglink c and raises it to a positionto be coupled with the adjacent car. Said lever may be operated from the outside of the car, instead of inserting the hand between the bumpers of the cars in raising the coupling-link, as before stated, thereby avoiding the danger of injury to the hands of the brakeman in coupling the cars.
The draw-head may be made in two parts, as shown, or it may be composed of an integral or solid casting.
The invention being so clearly illustrated in the drawings, further description is deemed unnecessary.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is- 1. A draw-head for cars, combining therein a chamber in the front end, which is open at the bottoni, as at A', having a tongue, c, projecting from the bottom toward the draw-head, and having an aperture therethrough to admit of the passage of the pin, and having a crossbar, as d, to serve as ajournal foracouplinglink, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination, with a draw-head provided with a chamber at the front end, having an open bottom and a perforated tongue, as described, oi a erossbar, as d, a conplinglink journaled upon said cross-bar, and a lever fulcrumed beneath the bottom ofthe car, having an arm extended to the outside of said ear, and adapted to raise said coupling-link in a position to engage with the draw-head of the adjacent c-ar, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 6th dayof October, 1887.
GEORGE XV. EDNARDS.
'Witnessesz OLIVER BRAKE, OsoAR A. MIGHEL.
