HOT-AIR REGISTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 380,145, dated March 27, 1888. Application filed J one 3, 1 887. Serial No. 240,183. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN SPRINGER, of Clinton, inthe county of Rock and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hot-Air Registers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hot-air registers; and the invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the parts, whereby means are provided for protecting the floor or' wood work in which the register may be placed, and for producing a more thorough circulation of air within the apartment, all as more fully hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the top perforated plate detached from the main pan or box. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section with the two parts put together.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A represents a register box or case provided with the laterallyptojecting flange B, and preferably I cast the two integrally with each other. The bottom of the box A is provided with a collar, 0, by means of which said box may be connected with a hot-air pipe, as in the ordinary manner, and in this collar is properly journaled a damper, D.
. E is an upwardlyprojecting flange or partition rising from the bottom of the box A, thus forming an inner chamber, M, and an outer chamber, N, between such partition and the outer vertical walls of the box. Properly journaled to one of the side walls of this partition E is a disk or wheel, F, the periphery of which projects above the top of the box A. This disk or wheel is provided with a cranklever, G, the free end of which latter is con nected, by means of a rod, H, to the damper D in such a manner that by a partial rotation of the disk the damper can readily be turned to close or unclose the opening through the collar.
I is the topperforated plate provided with thetwo sets of perforations a b, respectively,
near the outer edges of the sides and ends 'and above the chamber N, and with the larger perforations, c, the latter being directly over the chamber N. To the under side of the top plate, I, is secured the pendent flange J, its upper edge being secured to the top plate between the sets of perforations a b, as shown.
In practice, when the top plate is in. position, it rests upon the top of the partition E and lies flush with the top of the flange B. The pendent flange J of the top plate enters the space N between the partition E and the outer walls of the box and extends nearly to the bottom thereof., The -hot air enters the box through the collar, and is distributed to the holes b, and that such air will have been warmed byzcoming in contact with the partition or flange E.
' If it is desired, water may be put into the airspace Nsurrounding the inner chamber, which will by evaporation impart a suitable moisture to the air within the apartment.
i The damper can readily be opened or closed by operating the disk or wheel, which projects slightly above the top plate.
What I claim as my invention is-- The case A, formed with laterally-projecting flange B, collar 0, and partition E, forming an inner chamber, N, and an outer chamber, M, combined with the perforated top provided with large perforations over the inner cham ber and smaller perforations over the outer chamber, and with a pendent flange, J, extended vertically between the partition E and the outer wall of the case A, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
JOHN SPRINGER.
