FASTENING FOR PAIL-COVERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 379.797, dated March 20, 1888.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES F. Looms, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of \Vinona, in the county of \Vinona and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastenings for Pail- Oovers; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, which will enable others skilled [o in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of as much of a pail and its cover as will be sufficient to illustrate the construction of the preferred form of my fastener. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing a slightly-modified form of the fastening-strip. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing a modified form of the ear for the bail. Fig. 4

My invention has relation to fastenings for the covers or lids of pails or similar packages,-
and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts ofa fastening, which is especially adapted to be applied to pails made oi'pulp'or similar material, and which is adapted to be secured to the pail by the ears fastening the bail or handle, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed 40 out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, the numeral strip 10, which may be either flat or roundbeing, however, preferably flat-is inserted through apertures 11 in the upper and lower portions ofthe bulged portion of the ear. The strip has its lower end bent straight across when the strip is flat,to form a lip or stop, 12, while its upper end is secured to the lid or cover by nails or tacks driven through it and the cover, by staples having the strip passed through them and doubled over them, or by any other suitable fastening means.
In Figs. 1 and 2 the apertures in the bulged portion of the car are formed in the edge of the same, being notches or recesses, and the strip, which in Fig. 1 is shown fiat and in Fig.
2 is shown as a piece of wire, is held in these notches between the ear and the side of the pail, having the lip or stop at its lower end, preventing the strip from slipping up through the apertures.
In Fig. 3 of the drawings the strip is shown passed through slots in the ear, being otherwise secured in the same manner as in the other form.
Whenever a strip is broken or otherwise rendered unfit for use, another strip may easily be inserted after having withdrawn the former strip, and the lower end of the strip being bent to form the stop or lip, the strip will be held from slipping up through the apertures in the diametrically-opposite edges of the ear.
The strip may be secured by the ear, without having the edges of the latter notched or recesseihby simply inserting the strip between the ear and the side of the pail, as shown in Fig. 6, when the car will clamp the strip between it and the side of the pail and will retain it, the lower end of the strip being bent up, as before stated, holding against the lower c edge of the ear.
It will be seen that this fastening may be used for any vessel having a handle or handles, the handle or handles being secured with their hooked ends in the ears which secure the strips, or being formed integral with the ears or riveted or otherwise secured to the same, so that the fastening may be used for tubs or other vessels having two or more handles or having only one handle at one side, as well as 100 for pails having one handle secured at opposite sides; and any suitable means for securing the free upper end of the fastening-strip may be used, such as tacks, staples, or any other kind of fastening.
By reference to the drawings it will be seen that the lower edge of the lower recess or notch, which is preferably formed bystriking up the metal at the points for the recesses or notches, is rounded, and the line at which the lip or stop of the strip is bent is straight, causing the fold at the lip to bear against only one part of the curved edge of the notch or recess, and this construction will prevent the edge of the recess from cutting the bent end or lip off from the strip when strain is exerted upon the strip, which would be liable to happen if the edge were straight or if the lip were bent upon a curved line corresponding to the curve of the edge.
This fastening is especially adapted to vessels or packages made from wood pulp or other fiber, from any kind of hard compressed or molded material, or from metal, all of which materials are sufficiently hard to render it difficult, if not impossible, to drive nails or tacks into; and the fastening will also be advantageous for wooden vessels, in which nails or tacks may easily be driven, as it will save the vessel and prevent its being damaged by driving'the nails or tacks into its sides.
The insertion of the strip and the number and location of the apertures in the bulged part of the ear may be modified in various ways, and the car may be provided with various forms of passages for the insertion of the strip,without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I 'do not wish to confine myself to the exact construction of the fastenings shown in the drawings.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure byLetters Patent of the United States- 1. The combination, with a pail having ears upon its sides, of fasteningstrips secured thereto, thelower ends of which are bent and engage with the ears of the pail.
2. The combination, with a pail the ears of which are round upon their lower edges, of fastening-strips secured thereto, the lower ends of which are bent straight across and engage with the lower edges of the ears.
3. The combination, with a pail the ears of which are recessed, of fasteningstrips secured thereto, the lower ends of which are bent and engage with the recessed portions of theears.
4. The combination, with a pail the ears of which are recessedin their bulged portions, of fastening-strips passed through said recessed portions and having their lower ends bent and engaging with the lower edges of said recessed portions;
