1 Claim, 4 Drawing Figures TWO JAW 'roor.
SUMMARY BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to tools for crimping a nut and/or collar onto a pin and/or bolt; and, for example the present invention may be utilized for crimping a fastener structure of the type disclosed in Orloff et al., U. S. Pat. No. 3,421,562.
In fluid actuated tools for crimping a nut onto a bolt an actuating piston causes'a plurality of jaws to move relatively towards each other to effect the crimping. In some tools the axis of the jaw opening is in line with the piston axis. In the present invention, the piston axis is transverse to the axis of the opening through the jaws; this permits the area adjacent the jaw opening to be unobstructed by the tool such that there will be no interference between the tool and the shank of the bolt and hence the use of the tool will not be restricted by the length of the bolt. In addition to the above, the tool of the present invention has constructional advantages whereby the jaws can easily be removed.
The state of the art is indicated by Chirco U. S. Pat. No. 3,517,539 and 3,421,562, the disclosures of which are incorporated herein by reference.
Therefore it is an object of the present invention to provide a novel crimping tool having a construction in which the use of the tool will not be restricted by the length of the bolt.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a tool in which the jaws can be easily removed.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a tool construction which possesses an access port means to enable quick disassembly and removal of the jaws of the tool.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a tool wherein the crimping jaws can be changed and substituted with cutting jaws for use as a fastener removing tool. I
It is another object of the present invention to provide an improved tool construction wherein pressure relief means are provided on the forward end of the tool crimping stroke.
It is another object of the present invention to provide an improved tool construction powered by at least two hydraulic fluid supplied conduits which provide for a first power crimping action and a second power return.
It is a general object of the present invention to provide a novel tool construction.
Other objects, features, and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the subsequent description and the appended claims, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings.
BRIEF DESCRIPTIONOF THE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a tool embodying features of the present invention;
FIG. 2 is a sectional view of the tool of FIG. 1 taken generally along the line 2-2;
FIG. 3 is a sectional view of the tool of FIG. 1 taken generally along the line 3-3; and,
FIG. 4 is a view of the tool of FIG. 1 taken in the direction-of the arrows 4-4.
DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS Turning now to the drawings, a tool embodying features of the present invention includes a housing assembly 12, a piston assembly 14, and a jaw assembly 16.
The housing assembly 12 includes a housing 18 which has an enlarged, hollow, cylinder portion 20 with a cylinder base 22. The housing 18 has a reduced sized nose portion 24 at its forward end. The nose portion 24 has an elongated movable jaw member 26 slidably positioned within the aperture 28 of the nose 24. The right end portion 30 of the jaw 26 abuts against the pushing surface 32 of the push piston 14 and is held in position relative thereto by suitable connector means such as a socket head cap screw 34 and washer 36.
A static jaw member 38 is held in position by suitable connector means, such as a flat head cap screw 40 which positions the static jaw 16 in fixed relationship to a cross member 42 which cross member 42 forms a part of and is held in fixed'relationship to the nose member 24 through connection therewith by the side members 44 and 46 which extend outwardly from the nose member 24. The jaw assembly 16 has a locator means or stop member 48 positioned therewithin with the stop member being spring biased in position by the use of suitable means such as a Belleville washer 47. Other or alternative locating means may also satisfactorily be used in this invention as will be explained in more detail hereinbelow.
Such other suitable locating means are exemplified by the raised projections 49, 50, 51 and 52.
Locating means 48 or locating means 49-52 act to properly position the relative height of the jaw assembly 16 relative to the collar or nut of the fastener construction (not shown) such that the crimping action carried out by the teeth 16a of the jaw asembly 16 will be properly oriented axially relative to the nut or collar. For a flat work piece surface the locating means 49-52 are particularly satisfactory, however, when the work piece surface exposed to the underside of the tool is not generally horizontal relative to the nut or collar positioned over the bolt or pin which is inserted into the jaw assembly 16 then the stop member 48 with its locating surface 48a is generally a more satisfactory manner of locating the crimping teeth 16a relative to the nut or collar.
Operation of the tool 10 is as follows.
To push the piston 14 in a forward direction to thereby cose the jaw assembly 16 and effect the crimping action hydraulic fluid from a suitable source (not shown) is introduced through the conduit designated P.
' This hydraulic fluid exerts a force against the surface 14a of the piston 14 thereby moving the piston 14 to the left and closing the jaw assembly 16 to thereby exert the crimping action.
For return of the piston 14 to its original position after the crimping action is completed, hydraulic fluid is introduced through the conduit designated R to thereby exert a fluid pressure against the surface 148 of the piston 14 and thereby move the piston to the right back to its original position.
Pressure build up which may occur during the first cycle through introduction of hydraulic fluid through the conduit P is relieved due to provision of the pressure relief flat portion 54 to permit escape of fluid from high pressure side 14a to the low pressure side 14b of the piston and out conduit R at the end of the push cycle.
While it will be apparent that the preferred embodiments of the invention disclosed are well calculated to fulfill the objects above stated, it will be appreciated that the invention is susceptible to modification, variation, and change without departing from the proper scope or fair meaning of the subjoined claims.
