To obtain maximum capacity in apparatus of the said kind, 5 to 20 bobbins are usually stacked one above the other on each distributor pipe, and since a rather substantial flow of dye liquor through the pipes is required in practice in order to obtain the desired uniformity of colour, the velocities of flow occurring in the distributor pipe are very great, more particularly because it is common to use tubes and/or distributor pipes of comparatively small diameter in relation to the outer diameter of the bobbins.
The great velocities of the dye liquor vary in the longitudinal direction of the distributor pipe and involve variation in the flow from bobbin to bobbin and consequently variation in the flow from bobbin to bobbin with consequent different shades of colour.
If the bobbins involved are relatively firmly wound, the varying pressure in the interior of the distributor pipe will not give rise to any appreciable problems. However, the development in the textile industry tends to use more and more voluminous yarns requiring loose winding to avoid deformation of the yarn, and when such loosely wound bobbins are dyed in the known apparatus, the differences of shades occuring from bobbin to bobbin are entirely inacceptable.
This drawback is relieved by the apparatus according to the invention, the essential feature of which is the provision of coil springs in the interior of the distributor pipes, preferably throughout their length.
If the coil spring is of suitable diameter and wire thickness, it will produce an almost complete equalization of pressure differences in the distributor pipe so that the discharge of dye liquor through the holes ofthe distributor pipe will be the same throughout its length.
Thus, the following results have been measured in practice on dyeing loosely wound bobbins mounted on distributor pipes with a perforation percentage of about percent in a known apparatus and with spirals mounted inside the distributor pipes in an apparatus according to the invention:
Amount of flow through pipe litres/min.
Bobbin No. from above Without spiral With spiral the longitudinal direction of the distributor pipes and the consequent uniformly increasing pressure drop. The said differences may beequalized partly by the use of a lower percentage of perforations of the distributor pipes, which is obtained advantageously by reducing the size of the individual perforations of the distributor pipes instead of reducing the number of perforations. In order to retard the rapid flow through the small cross-sectional area of the perforation when the flow is in the direction from the distributor pipe out through the bobbins, the perforation of the distributor pipes according to the invention is appropriately formed in such manner that the plane of the openings forms an angle with the wall of the distributor pipe. As a result the dye liquor will be caused to rotate about the distributor pipe and be retarded before it reaches the inner layer of the bobbins.
The said retarded effect may be further improved according to the invention by providing the perforations of the distributor pipes with openings oriented in different directions, the rows of perforations having for example openings facing alternate directions.
The invention is further illustrated in the drawing, in which:
FIG. 1 shows a-distributor pipe in an apparatus according to the invention, with bobbins of yarn mounted thereon, and
FIG. 2 a cross-section of an embodiment of a distributor pipe according to the invention.
An apparatus according to the invention consists of a tank for dye liquor (not shown in the drawing), and in the said tank there is one or more distributor pipes 1 fed from a distributor chamber 2. In each distributor pipe is provided a coil spring 3 extending throughout the length of the pipe. For the sake of clarity the coil spring is not indicated in the upper part of the distributor pipe shown in the drawing. On the distributor pipe is stacked a number of bobbins of yarn 4 wound on perforated tubes 5 which may be cylindrical or conical as indicated in the upper and the lower position, respectively, of FIG. 1, or the bobbins may be mounted directly on the distributor pipe without the use of tubes as indicated in the central position in FIG. 1. The bobbins are separated from each other by intermediary plates 6, which, for example, may be formed with such conicity that they squeeze the outer part of the bobbins more than their inner part.
The distributor pipe 1 is provided with perforations 7 which in the simplest embodiment may be drilled in the pipe wall, by which the plane of the openings coincides with the plane of the pipe wall. In one embodiment according to the invention the perforations of the distributor pipe are so formed that the plane of the perforations forms an angle with the wall of the distributor pipe. This may be done, e.g., as indicated in FIG. 2 by punching a tab 8 and bending the said tab inwards. As
a result the dye liquor is directed more or less tangentially to the distributor pipe. As indicated in FIG. 1 the rows of perforations may advantageously be punched in such manner that they direct the flow of dye liquor into opposite directions.
We claim:
1. Apparatus for dyeing yarns wound on bobbins, said apparatus comprising perforated dye liquid distributor pipes on which the bobbins of yarn may be placed, the perforations being formed in such a manner that the planes of the openings form angles with the walls of the distributor pipes, and coil springs provided in the interior of the distributor pipes and extending substantially the length thereof.
2. Apparatus as in claim 1 wherein the perforations have openings oriented in different directions.
