Description
www? mj im UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
SAMUEL H. SUGETT, OF EDEN, MAINE.
IMPROVED FID.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 37,879, dated March l0, 1863.
To a/ZZ whom it 'may concern;
Be it known that I, SAMUEL H. SUGETT, ot Eden, in the county of Hancock and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful improvement in ds for putting thimbles into cringles in ships7 sails, awnings, and other similar things; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accom panyiug drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents an elevation of the tid with the thim ble in place on it preparatory to its being inserted in the cringle. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section through the same. Fig. 3 represents asimilar elevation as in Fig. 1 of a id of smaller size, and Fig. 4 a vertical section through it.
The method heretofore practiced in putting thimbles into cringles is very tedious, it being done by enlarging the cringle with the d and then forcing' in the thimble, when the tid is t withdrawn, into the cringle. By my method the thimble is clamped on the iid, which is in sections, and the cringle is driven over the d and onto the thimble, when the two parts of the d are detached and removed, leaving the thimble tightly grasped in the cringle, thus not only expediting the operation, but making a much more secure attachment.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I Will proceed to describe the same with reference to the drawings.
A is a tid, made of hard wood. or metal, to which is connected, by a screw, a, or any other attachable or detachable device, a base, B, which may be of wood or metal. The lower end of the tid A and the top of the base-piece B are shaped so as to receive and hold a thimble, O, between them, when they are screwed or otherwise fastened together. When the thimble is thus secured to the tid, the cringle is driven over the d and down onto the thimble, and the two sections A B are then detached and removed, leaving the thimble irmly grasped or held in the cringle. One base, B, may answer for several sizes of ids. there being a iid for each sized thimble that is to be inserted. In some cases the iid and thimble 1n ay be driven into the cringle, instead ofthe cringle driven over the tid, but in both cases the thimble is put into the cringle be fore the iid is removed, which is precisely the reverse of the old plan of inserting thimbles.
The facility of my mode and its superiority in pointof strength over the old plan is obvious at a glance.
Having thus fully described the nature and object of my invention, what I cla-im therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A iid made in two pieces or sections, so as to hold a thirnble between said sections while a cringle is being driven over o1' onto it and over or onto the thimble, and then capable of removal therefrom, substantially as described.
