COMBINED TAG-HOLDER AND HASPLOCK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 378,393, dated February 2l, 1888.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ROBERT W. GREENE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Savannah, in the county of Chatham and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Tag or Label Holder and Hasp-Lock; and l do hereby de clare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make anduse the same.

My invention is an improvement in a combined tag or label holder and hasp-lock; and my said invention consists of a hasp formed With a recess or slot therein for the reception of the address tag or label, and provided with a lock of novel construction for engaging the staple and securing the hasp in place, the construction of the parts being such that at the same time that the hasp is locked to the staple the address-tag is also locked in place and its removal prevented until the hasp is unlocked and Withdrawn from the staple, and for the purposes as will presently appear.

The object of this invention is to provide a hasp for use upon cardoors, mail-pouches, Src. that will combine in itself a lock to secure the parts together and a holder for the address tag or label, to accomplish which I proceed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings for a better understanding of the details of construction and arrangement of the parts, and in which drawings- Figure l represents a view in front elevation of a combined hasp-lock and tag-holder constructed according to my invention, the parts being shown as in their locked position. Fig. 2 represents a similar vienr illustrating the parts in .their unlocked position, with the address-tag about to be inserted within the recess provided therefor in the hasp, and the top portion of the lock-case removed to disclose the construction of the parts or mechanism of said lock. Fig. 3 represents a central longitudinal, and Fig. 1 a transverse sectional, elevation on the lines x :c and y y, respectively, of Fig. 1.

A and A', slightly separated from each other by a narrow strip,a',which extends along each side and the rear end, so as to form the recess A2 between the plates A A', and a certain portion of the top plate, A', is also lcut away, as 55 at C, for the purposes as will presently appear; or,instead of forming the hasp of the two plates A A', it may be cast With the recess A2 therein, if desired. This recess A2 is for the reception of the address-tag, the superscription whereof 6o is viewed through the opening G, above referred to; and diagonally across the bottom of this recess A2 is a curved spring, D, which eX- tends longitudinally from end to end of said recess,and has an upward pressure against the bottom of the tag, as shown in Fig.4, whereby said tag is securely held in place.

To place the tag T in position, which must occur before the hasp is placed on the staple, it is inserted from the front end over the sta- 7c ple-slot a and run back in the direction of the arrow-upon the top of the spring D, and until the outer end of said tag is beyond the stapleslot. If, therefore, the staple be nonr inserted into the slot a of the hasp, the withdrawal of the tag from the hasp is prevented, which is the result so long as the staple remains in this position. To lock the hasp is the next step, and to accomplish this a loclrease, as at E, is provided, Which may either be secured upon 8O or as an integral casting, with the hasp adjacent toftheslot a thereof, so as to engage the staple after it has passed through said slot. The

' lock mechanism consists of a hook, e, pivoted at c' to the case E and terminating in a notched 85 end, e?, and a locking bolt or tumbler, F, the end f of which engages the notched end eL of the hook @and secures said hook in its closed position.

Reactingsprings, as at c3 and f',are provided 9o for the hook e and bolt F, respectively, and said bolt is also formed with a curved recess, as at f2, Within which the key plays and Whereby said locking-tumbler is moved hack to disengage the end thereof from the end of the hook e.

By the insertion of the bool; e through the staple after said staple has been inserted through the slot ce of the hasp, said hasp is secured in position, and by reason of the locking roo of the 'said hook by the engagement with the end thereof of the bolt F, said hook is prevented from removal until the bolt F is disengaged by the action of a properly-constructed key.

The result of this construction of combined hasp-lock and tag-holder is that at the same time that the hasp is locked in place the removal of the tag is prevented.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is as follows, viz:

1. The hasp formed of the two plates A and A, slightly separated and with the narrow strip c along each side and rear end to form the recess A2, the entrance to which is in line With the staple-slot a, the plate A, forming the bottom, being solid and with the stapleslot a therein, and the plate A', vwith an opening, C, therein, combined with the spring D, extendinglongitudinally of the liasp and resting upon the bottom plate, A, as described, for the purposes specied. i

2. The combination, in a hasp-lock, of the hasp having the staple-slot a, the lock forming an integral part of said hasp vand composed of' a case, E, within which is pivoted a hook, e, havinganotched end, e2, bolt F, provided with the projection f, engaging said hook, spring e3, for reacting the hook e, and spring f', for reacting the bolt F, as described, for the purposes specied.
