IMPROVEMENT IN SEAL-LOCKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 201,076, dated March 5, 1878; application filed December 26, 1877.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ANDREW F. WRITING, of Norwich, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Seal-Locks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my improved seal-lock. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. 3 is a section of the hasp-post on the line as w of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detached perspective view of the hasp seal locking device. Fig. 5 is a section of the post which receives the free end of the lever and seal, on the line 2 'z of Fig. l; and Fig. 6 is a key adapted to set the seal-locking device.

Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters.

This invention relates to certain improvements in seal-locks.

It consists, first, of a hasp fitting over a post adapted for the attachment thereto of a seal; secondly, of a hasp fitting over a post adapted as aforesaid, and having a lever; thirdly, of a hasp fitting over a post adapted as before mentioned, and having a lever resting in a second post having a seal; and in the special construction of the main features, substantially as hereinafter more particularly set forth.

In the annexed drawing, A refers to a hasp connected to the door, and fitting over a post,

B, in practice secured to a car or other structure. C is a lever pivoted between said post and a stud, b, and at right angles to said post. When the hasp is in position upon the post B, the lever C is secured over it, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2, by the attachment to the post B of a seal, D, thus locking the hasp thereon. In the post B is inserted the annnlarlygrooved seal-locking device E, its ends being provided with slots 6 e, to mesh with slots f f in the post B, to permit of the attachment of the seal D to the post. In the post B isalso a springcatch, g, which engages with notch h in the annularly-grooved or reduced portion of the device E, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, to hold the said device in a locked position. By turnin g the device E with the key E, upon the insertion of the seal, a half-revolution toward the beveled portion i thereof, it will be brought around so as to cause its stop '6 to strike against the catch g, and thus lock the seal in place. The free end of the lever C rests in a slot in a second post, F, within which it may be locked by a second seal, G, having the initial letters of another railroad company.

In the post F is a spring-catch, j, projecting into an inclined or diagonal slot, k, the object of which is to provide a space above the catch to permit of the passage of the shank of the seal over said catch, the said shank being cast with the seal at an obtuse angle, in order to fit in the slot k and allow the seal itself to stand at right angles to the post F.

The seal G is provided upon its inner side with a shoulder or flange, Z, to entirely close the entrance to the slot 70. The shanks of the seals are bifurcated or left open, as shown at m, Fig. 6, to permit of their falling out of the slots of the posts B F when the seal or seals are broken.

It will be seen that the hasp can be locked in place by either the seal D or the seal and lever C, or by the lever and seal G.

- Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patout, is-- 1. A hasp fitting over a post, in combination with a lever which is swung into alignment with said post, to which it is pivoted, to permit of the detachment of the hasp therefrom, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In a seal-lock, the combination, with the hasp A, of the post B, having a seal and mechanism for locking said seal thereto, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. The hasp A, in combination, with the seal D, slotted post B, having the slotted looking device E, and a spring-catch engaging the said device, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

4. The hasp A, in combination with the lever 0, post B, inclosing a seal-locking mechanism, and seal D, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

5. The combination of the hasp A, lever 0, seal D, and slotted post B, having the seallocking mechanism E g, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

6. The lever 0, post 13, hasp A, and post F, having the seal G, in combination, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

7. The combination of the hasp A, post B, having a seal, D, lever G, and post F, having a seal, G, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

8. The combination of the seal D with the slotted hasp-post B, having the annularlygrooved locking device E, provided with slots 6, notch h, and stop i, and spring-catch 9, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

9. The lever-post F, having the inclined or diagonal slot 70 and spring-catch j, in combination with the seal Gr, having an obtuse-angled shank, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

10. A lock-seal provided with a bifurcated or open shank, m, substantially as and for the purpose set fort 11. The seal Gr, having a shoulder or flange, l, at a point between it and its shank, and crossing the same transversely at its base, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
