ABNER C. FISH, OF'RACINE, WVISGONSIN, ASSIGNOR TO MAR-ION L. FISH, OF SAME PLACE.
VEHICLE SPRING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 378,300, dated February 21, 1888.
Application filed March 28, 1887. Serial No. 232,683. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABNER (3. FISH, of Racine, in the county of Racine, and in the State of lrVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicle-Springs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Myinvention is designed as an improvement of the triple-spring wagon-gear, and will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of my gear. Fig. 2 is a section on line a: a", Fig. 1; and Figs. 3 to 9 are details which will be understood on reference to the letters marked thereon.
A and B are the side springs, and G is the center spring.
D D are braces, each having a warped and downward curve, a, and horizontal ends I). The center of each brace D rests beneath the center spring, 0, and the base of an angular brace, E, connects the braces D, and between the braces is bolted to spring 0 in the center, and this brace E is also secured to the spring 6 by clips 0 c, that secure the braces D to the spring 0. The upper ends of the brace E are bent to form horizontal flanges 0, each to support the center of a brace, F, and bodyrest' that extends from one side spring to the other. The ends of these braces and body-rests F are secured to the side springs by clips, the inner leg of each clip passing through a hole in the end of a brace, D, and serving to secure it to brace and body-rests F, while the outer legs pass through rub-irons G and serve to secure them in position to hold the ends of the braces F apart, the center of each being secured to the spring by its center bolt, 9.
It is designed that each side sill of the body rests just inside of one of the side springs, and the bolts (Z, that secure the body in place, pass down or up through the perforations d in the braces D and F, and therefore these bolts perform the further office of strength ening the connection between the braces. I prefer to make the axles, as well as the bolster, of steel.
I I are additional body-rests that are secured to the braces F and D by the bolts d,
washers of rubber and of lead being interposed between the rests I and the braces, and then between the body-sills and their respective rests I may place washers of rubber, and all are held together by the bolts d.
My device affords a complete brace for the springs, preserving their integrity under any strain that they are liable to be subjected to, whether diagonal or at right angles to the length of the springs.
The front axle, M, is provided on top with a plate, m, having an upwardly-projecting aunulus, m, that fits snugly in a corresponding opening in the under side of the bolster N, and the king-bolt 0 passes down through the bolster and axle, as is usual.
Washers may be interposed between the various parts to prevent rattling.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a triple -spring gear, of warped braces the centers of which are clipped to the center spring, independent body-rests extending from one side spring to the other, and a center brace connecting the said spring, braces, and body-rests together, as set forth.
2. The combination, with a triplespring gear, of warped braces the centers of which are clipped to the under side of the center spring and having holes near their ends, main body rests extending from one side spring to the other above the warped braces and having holes coinciding with those in the latter,
additional body-rests extending from one of the main body-rests to the other and resting upon them, and provided with holes coinciding with those in the main body-rests and warped braces, and bolts passing through said holes and uniting the said parts together at their points of contact, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with the side springs, of cross-braces or main body-rests and additional body-rests extending from one of the cross-braces to the other and resting thereon, as set forth.
4. The combination, with the side springs and their ,oenter bo1ts,- of a pair of erossthe county of Milwaukee and State oflVVisco'nbraces and a rub-iron, the latter extending sin, in thepresen'ce of two witnesses.
from one orossbrace to the other and secured I to the side springs by their center bolts, as set ABNER FISH' 5 forth. Witnesses:
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I S. S. STOUT,
have hereunto set my hand, at Milwaukee, in MAURICE F. FREAR.
