Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW J. REYNOLDS, OF DAYTON, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN PUMPS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 37,826, dated March 3, 1863.
My invention relates to the class of pumps which discharge their water through a hollow piston-rod; and it consists in, first, an arrangement of double-aeting disk-valve, cast loosely within a tubular water-discharging piston cast in a single piece around said valve without being attached to the same, whereby these parts are materially simplified and oheapened, and rendered more durable and el'ective; second, a simple and effective lever-power for operating a Water-dischargin g pistonrod. l
Figure l represents the parts of my improvement above the platform in perspective and the parts below the platform in section. Fig. 2 shows the hollow piston detached. Fig. 3 is a section through that part of the leverpower which connects with the hollow pistonrod.
A, a double-acting pumpcylinder, and B, its side passage, communicate with each other at top.
O C' are inlet-valves from the Well or cistern into the cylinder and side passage, respectively.
The piston-head D and its rod D' are cast hollow and in a single piece. The piston-headD communicates with the lower part of cylinder A, by means of a valve-guarded aperture, E, and with the upper portion of cylinder through a duct, F, whose ventage f is at every descent of the piston closed by the same valve, C", which closes the aperture E on the ascending stroke. The valve C" :is in disk form, and being molded within the body of the core is confined loosely in its place within the pistonhead in the act of casting the latter. i
H is the base-plate, and I I' are the standards of a pedestal, H I I', which is screwed fast to the platform J. The standards I I' form journal-bearings for the gudgeons kof a bell-crank, K, one limb of which consists of a socket, L, for a wooden handle l, while the other limb terminates in two branches, M M', perforated for two pivots, N N'. The pivots N N consist of two set-screws with cylindrical necks enabling them to turn freely within the branches M M', and screw-threaded t0- ward their points to enable them to be xed immovably Within a collar, O, and made to tightly grip the hollow piston-rod D'. The pieces N N' thus serve the double purpose of -pivots and set-screws.
valve C' opening, the water from the well enters now the side passage, B, while the Water in the bottom of the cylinder escapes directly up the piston.
When left at rest the pump is self-emptying to the water-level, and is therefore non-freezing, while from taking its water wholly from below it is always primed for prompt and effective action.
I claim as new and of my invention-w l. The hollow piston D D' E F f, containing the double-acting disk-valve C" within the said piston, the whole being constructed and operating in connection with a double-acting pump-cylinder or its equivalent, substantially as set forth.
2. The arrangement of bolts N N', serving the twofold purpose of pivots and set-screws, the collar O, bell-crank K L M M', and pedestal H I I' the whole being combined with and serving to operate a water-discharging pistonrod D' in the manner set forth.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
A. J. REYNOLDS.
