UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J. WOOL GRISWOLD, OF TROY, NElV YORK.
FENCE-POST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 378,051, dated February 14, 1888.
Application filed August 10, 1887. Serial No. Q46,57l. (No model.)
T0 on whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J. WOOL GRIswOLD, of Troy, Rensselaer county, New York, have invented a new and'useful Improvement in Fence- Posts, of' which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a fence-post made from tubing; and it consists in the construction thereof, substantially as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 representsatnbein perspective; Fig.2,an end view of the same; Fig. 3, my improved fence-post as produced from said tube; Fig. 4, a lower end View ofsaid post; Fig. 5, an upper end view of said post, and Fig. 6 a perspective view of the upper extremity.
A, Fig. 1, is a piece of metal tubing. Preferably I employ for the present purposes old boilertubes, which are sold in the market cheaply as scrap, and which I find to be sufficiently strong, whileat the same time of proper form and dimensions. Any other welded, drawn, or rolled tube may, however, be employed. In order to convert this tube into a post, I flatten the upper portion, A,slit it longitudinally for a'short distance at B, and then spread the separated parts D and E, as shown in Figs. 3 and 6. In this way I may form a crotch to receive an upper wire or rail. The other extremity of the tube is flattened at F and the edges G H are sheared off to produce a point. This part of the post is intended to be driven into the ground.
This post is very cheaply and easily made, and is both strong and durable.
I claim- 1. As a new article of manufacture, a tubular metal fence-post having at one extremity the flattened portion A, slit longitudinally to form the crotch D E, substantially as described.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a tubular metal fence-post having at one extremity the flattened and pointed portionF and at the other extremity the flattened portion A, slit longitudinally to form the crotch D E, substantially as described.
J. \VOOL GRISYVOLD.
