CAS-ren.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 377,721, dated February 7, 1888.
Application filed September 7, 1887. Serial No. 249,053. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, JACOB P. REED, a citizen of the United States, and a residentof New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Casters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a caster for use on roller-skates, piano-fortes, and household furniture, it being more particularly intended for use on roller-skates.
The invention consists in the novel construction of the roller itself, having loose independent axles, and ofthe separable casing provided with an annular bearing on which .the roller is adapted to rotate in both ahorizontal and vertical direction, and thereby readily adj ust itself according to the direction of propulsion of the article to which it is attached, whereby I obtain a cheap, compact, and superior device, which is simple in operation and can be manufactured at comparatively low cost, as more particularly set forth and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a side view of my improvement. Fig.'2 is a vertical central sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a top or plan view. Fig. 4 is a bottom view. Fig. 5 is av vertical sectional view showing the axle arranged in boxes or sleeves, to be hereinafter more particularly referred to. Fig. 6 is a 1ongitudinal sectional View taken through the axles. Fig. 7 is a vertical sectional view taken at right angles to Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. Y
The letter A designates the roller for use in my caster, constructed with an equatorial sphericalbearing-surface, a, and provided with 4 `vertical and horizontal direction-that is to 6o say, the roller A will Aturn vertically on its independent axles O C', and the roller will turn horizontally on the annular hearings D D of the casing.
' In so'me'instances the independent axles C 65V C may be loosely arranged in a box or sleeve, H H', in such a manner that while the axles C G turn `in one direction the sleeve H H will turn in an opposite direction, and thereby more rapidly adjust the roller in the direction of its propulsion, as shown in Fig. 5; or the axle O may turnkin one direction and the axle C' in an opposite direction.
The casing or shell may be made of two'separable sections, E E', and of any suitable sub- 75 stance or material. rIhe material which would probably be found the most preferable would be brass or iron. The separable cases E E may be of any desired shape; butI prefer to make them in two sections-the upper' one, 8o dome shape, having its top fiat and provided with screw-holes b b, for securing it to any desired article, and having formed on its lower part a flange, I, provided with openings for uniting it with the lower section I', asshown' 'in Figs. l, 2, and 3, while the lower section E is also provided with a flange, I', for join ing it to the upper section, I. It, moreover, has an opening left for the passage and operation of the roller A on the door, as clearly shown'in Figs. 2 and 4.
It is evident the axles C C and the sleeves H H may be made in one piece, if desired.
A `bracket or socket of any suitable shape may be used in connection with. my improved' caster; or a socket, S, may be used.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A caster composed of a roller with axles adapted to turn in opposite directions arranged roo made in two sections, in combination with a lo easing made in two separablesections provided with interior annular bearing-surfaces, and an exterior flange for uniting the sections, substantially as shown and described.
