" UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GILBERT E. JONES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
. QUOIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 377,619, dated February '7, 1888.
Application filed February 10, 1887. SerialNo. 227,163. (No model.)
the head F of the quoin It is shaped, as'seen To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GILBERT E. JoNEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Quoins, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in quoins, as set forth inthe following specification and claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of a galley with a quoin. Fig. 2 is a section in the plane a: m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the quoin of Fig. 1. Fig.4 is a plan view of a modified form of quoin applied to a galley. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the quoin of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of a side stick adapted to be used with the quoin shown in Fig. 5. Fig. 7. is a side elevation of a sidestick adapted to be used with the quoin shown in Fig. 8. Figs. 8 and 9 are perspective views of modified forms of quoi'ns.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, the letter A indicates a galley. B B are the sides of the galley. Ois D is a side-stick, and E is a quoin. The quoin is adapted to engage the side-stick and hold the side-stick in place, so as to lock up the matter.
In Figs. 1, 2, and 3 the quoin E is show with a head, F, adapted to engage recesses or grooves G in the side-stick D; and said quoin is formed with a circular hand-orifice located adjacent to a cam-surface, I, and eccentric to the end pivoting-head, F, so that by inserting a finger in the eccentrically-arranged handorifice, and by swinging or moving the quoin about the head F in the proper direction, the quoin E will be brought firmly into contact with a side, B, of the galley. The side-stick D is thus forced against the matter to lock up such matter. By perforating the quoin, as shown, the quoin will be made light and cheap of manufacture, and such quoin can be readily handled. 5
In the modification shown in Figs. 4, 5, and 6 the notches G in the side-sticks D extend along the entire height of the side-stick, and
in Fig. '5, to eugagesuch notches.
In the modification shown in Figs. 7 and 8 the notches G extend only along a portionof the height-of the side-stick, and the head F of the quoin E is shaped, as seen in Fig. 8, to engage such notches.
In the examples shown in the drawings the free edge I of the quoin acts as a cam to force the side-stick into position to lock up the matter. I
The eccentric hand-orifice H is shown in the drawings as passing entirely through the quoin E. If desired, the eccentric hand-orifice H may pass only partly through the quoin.
The head F of the quoin shown in Fig. 5 is angular; but, if desired, said head F may be rounded or formed as seen in Fig. 9. By having the cam-surface I of the quoin grooved or channeled, as seen in Fig. 5, saidcarn-surface is adapted to firmly engage a side of a galley, even though such side be uneven or rough.
The quoin may be made to act directly on a I side-stick; or, as seen in Fig. 1, the quoin may be made to act on a lock. Such lock may be either a side-lock, K, or an end-lock, L, or
'both a side-lock and an end-lock... The lock K shown in Fig. 1 is provided with a groove or recess, G, in the same manner as the sidestick D is grooved or recessed.
In order to prevent the lock and quoin from becoming detached or separated from one another, a pin, M, may be used to connect the quoin and the lock, and the quoin E may be made to swing about the pin M.
Heretofore it has been proposed to use rotating cam-shaped quoins with grooved side and end sticks, as in English Patent No. 2,200 of 1878, and such, therefore, I disclaim.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I 1. In combination with a galley, a quoin formed with twoends, one as a pivoting-head,
F, pivoted on the side-stick, and the other as a curved cam-surface, I, and having a handorifice, H, located adjacent to the cam-surface and eccentrically with reference to the pivoting-point on the side-stick, so that by engaging the fingers with the said orifice the quoin quoin, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination, with a side-stick, D, having grooves or depressions G extending along a portion of the height of the side-stick,
of a quoin, E, provided with a head, F, said head F being adapted to engage the side-stick at its grooves, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereofI have hereunto set my 15 hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
