Description

' UNITE STATES PATENT YOFFICEQ nnnny nnsrwoon, OF PATEBSON, NEWJERSEY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 377,425, dated February 7, 188 8. Application filed March 12, 1887. Serial No. 230.602. (No model.) r
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, HENRY EASTWOOD, a I citizen of the United States, residing at Paterson, Passaic county, State of New Jersey, have 5 invented a new and useful Improvement in Looms, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
Hitherto when two pieces of fabric have 10 been woven in the same operation in one loom--that is, with a fiy-shuttle-usually the outer edges only of such two pieces of fabric have been finished or selvaged, while a narrow unwoven space between the two fabrics I 5 has been left. The two pieces of fabric so woven. and afterward separated by cutting, have one raw or unfinished edge each, which must be finished by hand at a considerable outlay. It has been proposed to weave two distinct webs of fabric side by side in one loom with a perfect selvage on both sides through the use of fly-shuttles.
The object of my present inventionis to provide improved means by which, as in the 2 last-mentioned method with fly-shuttles, any practical number of pieces of fabric can be woven in the loom, with both edges finished or selvaged in the same operation. 7 I
With this end in view my invention conusual supporting-frame, A, driving-shaft a,
crank-arms a", pitman a, cam-shaft l3, tappets F", tappet-levers F F cloth-beam C, ratchet and pawl 0 and gearing C between the ratchet and cloth-beam, warp-beam C, lay C, and lay-swords P. The, lay is shown as having a number of the usual reed-frames, M, shuttle-boxes, N, and guards, K, and a single guard-supporting rod, L, applied thereto. The general loom,.whichis constructed as is fusual, need not, it is thought, he further-de- 5o scribed herein.
In a suitable position on the lay-swords]? sists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, hereinafter fully deof the loom A, arrange and secure-by bolts:- a transverse beam, B. This beam B, which vibrates with the lay O and swords P, to which J Jay and plates H'H H H and bolts H. The picking-sticks and levers are connected 6 with the straps and plates by pivot-bolts H as shown, while the picking-sticks D D are provided with retractingspring's H, one end of each of which springs is fastened to the" beam B. I
, 7 The driving-shaft a is put in motion in the usual way, and by mean'sfofcrank-arms a, pitman a, and gears a a vibrates the lay 0 and rotates the shaft F and tappets thereon, 1 s which tappets in turn give theusual alternate 7 5v up-and-down motion to the heddles to form 1 the sheds. The lay, by means of cord 0, impartsan up-and-down movement to the lever 0 which by means of pawl and ratchet O 7 actuates the gearing between the ratchet-wheel 8c and cloth-beam,which turnsthe cloth-beam O The warps having been taken through the loom and the loom put'in motion in the manner stated, the operation is as follows: Lever F is depressed by the action-of the correspond-Y v ing cam, F, which by means of link F draws down arm Gof the lever E, throwing said lever outward, the lever taking withit in the same direction, through the connections stated, picking-sticks D D D D which action of the go picking-sticks throws'their respective shuttles through the sheds 1 2 3 into the boxes N on 7 the left-hand side of the said sheds or webspaces, (seen in Fig. 1,) the stickqD having been idle in the action.
been raised in the last action of. lever F through the connections, is next depressed by the cams action thereon, and by means of link F draws down arm G of lever E, throwing said lever outward, and through the connections stated throws picking-sticks D D" D ,D. in the same direction, which throws the shut- The lever F having 5.
More may be added and more picker'sticks operated at the same time, if desired.
Having described myinvention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the levers E E and pickingsticks D D D' 113 straps J J J plates H H H I-Rand bolts H H ,of beam B,adapted to carry said connected levers and picking sticks, springs H, rods or links F F, adapted to operate levers E E, all as described, lay C, lay-swords P, shaft 00, crank-arms a, pitmen a, for vibrating the lay, camshaft F and tappets thereon, and levers 13 F HENRY EASTWOOD.
XVitnesses:
J AMES RIGL'EY, JOHN INGLIS.
