VENT PLUG.
No. 377,087. Patented Jen. 31, 1888.
UNITET) STATES PATENT FFICE.
MAX SCHUETZ, OF NEV YORK, N. Y.
VENT-PLUG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 377,087, dated January 31, 1888 Application lled June 8, 18,87. Serial No. Q40,579. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, MAX ScHUETz, of the city, county, and State of New York, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Vent-Plugs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to'an improved ventplug for the bung-holes of beer and other kegs; and the invention consists of a vent-plug the lateral vent-tube of which is provided with a valve-plug having a central opening, said valve-plug beingtted into a recess of the venttube and provided with a flap-valve having a shank bent at nearly right angles thereto and made integral therewith, said shank having pivots set in sockets made integral with the valve-plug, which latter is retained in position in the vent-tube by a screw-cap having openings outside of the central opening of the valveplug.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section of my improved vent-plug. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the valve-plug, drawn on a larger scale. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section through the lateral vent-tube on line x x, Fig. l. Fig. 4 is an end view of the screw-cap on the vent-tube, and Fig. 5 is a perspective View of the hinged flap-valve of the vent-plug.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the tubular main portion or shank of my improved vent-plug, which is made of cast metal and provided at the upper end with a attened head for permitting the driving in of the plug into the bung. The main portion or shank A is provided with a lateral vent-tube, B, which is arranged with an interior seat, a, for the valve-plug D, and with an exterior screwthread, a, for a detachable screw-cap, C. The valve-plug D is made of disk shape, and is provided with a central vent-opening, d, and a tubular inwardly-extending portion, d', against which rests a nap-valve, E, that is provided with a facing of soft rubber attached to the body of the iiap-valve by a rivet and suitable washer. From the upper part of the diskshaped flap valve extends, at right angles thereto, a shank, e, that is made integral with the body of the valve and provided with laterally-extending pivots e', which are seated in sockets e?, that are cast integral with the valveplug D. The sockets e? may be formed of ears, which are bent back toward the body of the valve-plug after the valve-pivots have been placed in position therein, so as to prevent the detaching or playing loose of the hinged dapvalve from the sockets of the valve-plug. The screw-cap C holds the valveplug D firmly to its seat a, and is provided with two'or more openings, b, which are located at a greater distance from the center of the screw-plug D than the radius of the vent-opening d, so that the flap-valve Eis protected against the insertion of a pointed instrument or tool, whereby the sensitiveness of the valve may be interfered with.
The valve E its tightly to its seat, and is opened by the pressure-ot' the atmosphere on the same when a partial vacuum is created in the interior of the keg in consequence of the drawing off of some of the contents. As soon as the drawing off is interrupted, the interior pressure on the valve closes the same and prevents the entrance of atmospheric air. The valve can be readily cleaned from any adhering impurities by rinsing the same with warm Water, or repaired by detaching the screw-cap and valve-plug, in which case a new valve can readily be inserted.
The valve is of simple construction and protected against injury from the outside, and works in a reliable manner, being of comparatively cheap construction, owing to the small number of parts and the ease of assembling the same.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patents- 1. The combination of a vent-plug having a lateral vent-tube with an interior valve-seat and an exterior screw-thread, a valve-plug having a ventopening, a raised valve-seat, and sockets above said seat integral with the valveplug a Hap-valve having a shank bent at right angles therewith, and pivots made integral with the shank, and a screw-cap screwed on the vent-tube, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of a vent-plug having a lateral vent-tube, a valve-plug fitted into said vent-tube and provided with a central ventopening, a raised seat and sockets above said IOO seat, a Hap-valve having a shank bent at right Hap-valve having a shank bent at right angles angles therewith, and pivots made integral therewith, and pivots made Vin-teggral With said with said shank, and a screw-cap screwed on shank, substantially as set forth. the venttube and provided with openings In testimony thatIclaim the foregoingas my I5 5 outside of and not in line with the vent-open invention I have signed my name in presence ing of the plug, substantially as set forth. of two subscribing witnesses.
3. In a vent-p1ug, the combination of an adjustable Valveplug having a central vent MAX. SCHUH-DZ opening, a raised tubular seat portion, and Witnesses: [o sockets V above said seat portion, said sockets PAUL GoEPEL, -being made integral with the plug, with a CARL KAR?.
