UNITE STATES PATENT D F-ICE.
WILHELM FRIEDRICH OF E HARD on HAMBURG, GERM N ALARM AP PA R ATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 876,989, dated Janim 24.1888.
Application filedJuly 252, 1887. Serial No.245,00'2. (No model.) Patented in Germany August 20, 1884, No. 31 August 20, 1884, No. 11,473, and in France August 21, 1884, No. 163,873. 1
T0 aZZ whom it may, concern:
Be it known that' l." WILHELM FRIEDRICH LGFFELHARDT, a subject of the German Emperor, and a resident of Hamburg, in the German Empire, have invented certain new and. useful Improvements in Alarm Apparatus.
(for which I have received Letters Patent in I Germany, No. 31,285, datedAugust 20, 1884; in France, No. 163,873,-dated August 21, 1884, and in Great Britain, No. 11,473, dated August 20, 1884,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in apparatus for announcing either the closing or opening of doors, drawers, 860.; and the objects of my improvemenlsare either to stop the alarm entirely or to make it sound While the driving mechanism moves one way or moves to and fro. I attain these objects bythe.mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figures 1, 2, and 3 are top views of an apparatus, with the bell removed therefrom, in different positionsot' the working parts. Fig. 4 is a cross-section on the dotted line as m, Fig. 3. Figs. 5 to 9 illustrate details. Fig. 10 shows the application of the apparatus to a door.
Similar letters refer to si milarparts throughout the several views. 7 V
The hammer i is pivoted upon a movable disk, 0', and is worked by a fixed pinion,'e, around the center line of whichthe disk '6 can The disk eis rotated by the pulling of a strap or ribbon,f, .which is wound upon the barrel 0?, fixed to the disk e. -.The spring h in ,the barrel dis wound up by the pulling of the ribbon f, and itwill turn back the barrel and the disk e as soon as there is y no more pull on the ribbon f.
When the disk 0 rotates, the arm m comes in contact with the teeth of the pinion e, and thus causes the hammer i, the nose 2" of which catches into a notch, m, of the arm m, to strike the bell k. The hammer i willstrike the bell when the disk 6' rotates either way, Fig. 1.
If the gong shall sound while the disk 6 is rotating in but one direction, the arm m has to be moved sidewise by means of the handle 112?, so that the arm a, and not the arm m, will come in contact with the teeth of the pinion .285; in England the disk erot-ates in the corresponding direc tion, (see position assshown in Fig. 2 by dotted lines,) and will ring the bell. If the disk 6, however, turns the other way, the lever n is moved in'such a way that its arnrn will not 7 lift the earn 1';
If the gong shall not sound at all, the han- I dle m f'ismoved in the opposite direction,
Fig. 3. Neither the arm at nor the arm n will come in contact with the teeth of the pinion e. r
In Fig. 10 the apparatus is shown fastened to a d0or-frame,,A. The door B carries a stud, G, where the outer end of the strapfis attached. By this arrangement the bell will ringif the door'is moved either way; or it .will ring if the door opens,.and will not sound if the door closes, or the bell will not ring at' all.
certained the nature ofmy saidinvention and in what manner thesame isto be' performed,
Ideclare that what I claim is 1. In an alarm apparatus, with the disk 0, havingthe barrel cast therewith, of the spring on said barrel and strap connected therewith, a bell, andpivote'd gravity-hammer actuated from the movement of the disk, substantially as set forth. 1
1 2. In an alarm apparatus, the combination, with the movable disk,spring-barre1, and strap for actuating the same, of a bell and pivoted WILHELMFRIEDRICH LUFFELHARDT.
