- the width stored by the analog translation of rack 11 is transferred to photolayer support 7, i.e., the latter is advanced by exactly this width and positioned so that it can be held for receiving the next symbol 2.
- the releasable character support 1 immediately after the conclusion of the illumination of the foregoing character or symbol 2 with simultaneous storage of its width value, can be set by the operator of the photocomposing machine to the next symbol 2.
- the photocomposing machine as set forth in the present example for one character size for the sake of simplicity can, of course, be used with suitable means for all character sizes.
