f* VAGINAL SYRINGE.
ySPECIFICATION forming par; of Leners Patent 10.376.72'7. dated January .24, 1888.
Application mea August 29, 12er. senin No. 248,184. (No model.)
the following is a specification, reference be 'ing had therein tothe accompanying drawings.
My invention relateskk to surgery, and is an having aseries of lingers connected with a nozzle and the latter with'an elastic bulb; and
the objects of myimprovernent are to produce with pivoted fingers a nozzle having in its delivery end a .screwth'readed regulable stopper, whereby the flow from said nozzle may be either a'fine spray or a circular stream tangentially issuing therefrom.k
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawings, and then be pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side vie-w of the combined vaginal sprayerand dilatorfconstructed in accordance with my invention, showingthe lingers closed. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same, showing the ngers open. Fig. Sis a perspective view of the upper portion of the nozzle with'its adjustable stopper-plug removed.
In said drawings, Av represents the nozzle, consisting of a tube having its rear end enlarged andscrewthreaded internally at A to receive the coupling, of a rubbertor other) tube to connect it to an elastic bulb or to other fluid-forcing device. The front end of the nozzle is also enlarged and screwthreaded inf, ternally at'A2 to receivel the screw-threaded end b of a current controlling and deliecting plug, B. Said plug has above its screwthread a conical and outwardly-flaring portion, b2, adapted to fit the outwardlydiaring opening a2 in the front end of the'nozzle, so that a fluid current issuing from the nozzle will assume a bell-shaped form and will be'ofI more or less amount, according to the distance between flaring portions a2 b2. When these parts a? b"Z are brought in contact, the uid will, when under pressure, still issue in the form of spray, as the flaring portion a2 of the front end of the nozzle has a series of fine radial grooves or notches, c3, as shown in Fig.
3. To permit the iiuid to' reach the Haring portion b2 of the plug, the latter has two or more large longitudinal grooves, b3, cut/in its screw-thread. The nozzle can thus be used to spray liquids or to insufliate powders or gases in currents 0f any desired size.
To complete the devlce as a vaginal dilater, a series of looped wires or fingers,KV D, are suit- ,PATENT rricn. .2
ably bent and pivoted,at about the iniddleof theirlength, to the sides of the nozzle adjacent l l to its front end,`small cavities c being vmade' therein for that purpose.l The nozzle is circumferentially grooved at that point to form a seat for a wire, e, Vthat is passed around the nozzle and the fingers and retains the latter pivotally secured in the small cavities c. Bythis simple construction,if the operator grasps thenozzle with the handles Dz of the ngers bearing against the exterior of his hand, the
front end of the lingers become collected together to a' point shown in Fig. `l, and are easily introduced into a patient.` If the oper-` ator then brings the" handles D within his grasp, thel ngersbeco'me spread apart, and"` lcan be .thus retained'to any desired degree, as
shown in Fig. 2. Y f Y y Although I prefer to usev a single wire e to unite the inge'rs'to the nozzle, 'the latter mayl be provided with perforated lugs on the sides of the bearings for said fingers, andan independent pin be used to retain eachgiinger.
Having now fully described my invention,
I clairnv l., The combination of an injector-nozzle, having its frontend internally screw-threaded and the opening flaring, Withla plugl having its inner end screw-threaded, and longitudi-y nal grooves insaid screw-threaded portion, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination of a nozzle having upon its sides cavities c, and a circumferential groove with a series offlngers -looped at both ends and bent in the middle between said ends, and ay wire bearing Aupon the bent middle portion of vsaid fingers and resting in said groove, sub- '1 stantially as and for the purpose described.
, In'testimony whereof I aflix my signature in A presenceof two witnesses. w Y
SYLVESTER W. BEALL.
