Abstract

A carton comprising sleeves telescopically assembled upon carton contents has ends provided with flaps extending longitudinally along the exterior of the carton, tabs at the ends of the flaps being inserted through slots in the carton side wall and folded and pressed outwardly by the carton contents. Very weighty contents such as strips of metal can be packaged securely because of the interlock provided between the contents and the tabs.

The instant invention accomplishes this result so successfully that it is virtually impossible for the contents to break open the carton and escape from the package.
SUMMARY OF INVENTION Except for dimensions the telescopic end portions of the carton are identical, each having a folded end closure wall with a flap holding it shut and anchored by a terminal tab projecting through a slot in the side of the carton and forced outwardly into pressure engagement with the carton when the contents are pushed into the carton for shipment. Some means, preferably an adhesive connection between the telescopically associated carton components, secures these to each other in positions in which the contents securely complete the interlocking anchorage of the locking tabs to the carton.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS DETAILED DESCRIPTION For illustrative purposes, I have shown metal strips 6 associated face-to-face to constitute the package contents, such strips being difficult to retain successfully in a package for shipment.
The carton component 8 is a sleeve of cardboard or the like into which the contents 6 fit snugly but slidably. In their ultimate positions, the strips comprising the contents 6 will extend to the folded end wall 10 which is integrally hinged at 12 to a back wall 14 of tube 8. The end wall hasa flap 16 terminally provided with a tab 18 receivable into a transverse slot 20 in the front wall 22 of the carton component 8.
The carton component 24 may be substantially identical structurally with that shown at 8. It is slightly larger in cross section, being adapted to receive the carton component 8 telescopically. It may also be considerably shorter as shown in the drawing, although its length is largely immaterial. Like component 8, the component 24 has an end wall pivoted at to the back wall of component 24. Likewise the end wall 100 has a flap terminating in a tab receivable into the slot 200.
With carton components 8 and 24 preliminarily completed as shown in FIG. 2, the respective flaps will lie flat on the respective front walls 22 and 22D and tabs 18 and 180 will depend into the interior of the respective components where they will lie in the path of the contents 6. When relative movement between the components and the contents forces the contents to the respective end walls 10 and 100 as shown in FIG. 3, the relative advance of the contents will force the tabs 18 and 180 toward opposite ends of the resulting package and they will be held frictionally against the respective top walls of components 8 and 24. The result is a package which cannot accidentally become opened notwithstanding the great weight of the contents, here as sumed to be strips of metal, J
Any desired means may be employed to secure the components 8 and 24 in their mutually telescoped relationship. This may be done by external banding or by adhesive 30, the latter being illustrated in FIG. 3 for purposes of illustration of a means for connecting together the two telescopically related components.
I claim:
1. A package comp rising elongated contents and a .pair of carton components telescopically associated with each other and fitting said contents, each such component having an end wall, a back wall and a front wall, the end wall being pivoted to the back wall and extending across the'contents and having a flap extending along the front wall, and a tab at the end of the flap extending through a slot with which the front wall is provided, said tab being engaged by said contents and extending toward the respective end wall between the contents and the front wall and held by the contents in pressure engagement with the front wall, together with means holding the components together in telescopic relationship with their respective end walls substantially engaged with the contents.
2. A package according to claim 1 in which the contents comprise elongated metal strips in face contact with each other.

Claims (2)

1. A package comprising elongated contents and a pair of carton components telescopically associated with each other and fitting said contents, each such component having an end wall, a back wall and a front wall, the end wall being pivoted to the back wall and extending across the contents and having a flap extending along the front wall, and a tab at the end of the flap extending through a slot with which the front wall is provided, said tab being engaged by said contents and extending toward the respective end wall between the contents and the front wall and held by the contents in pressure engagement with the front wall, together with means holding the components together in telescopic relationship with their respective end walls substantially engaged with the contents.
2. A package according to claim 1 in which the contents comprise elongated metal strips in face contact with each other.
