Definitions

  • ABSTRACT Safety lock for insertion into the breech opening of a firearm comprising a lock member rotatably connected to a cylinder member, the lock member being received in the chamber of the breech block and rotated therein to a locked position by a key inserted into the cylinder member.
  • the invention relates a safety plug for firearms and the like which is inserted into the breech of the firearm to deactivate it and render it inoperable as a firearm.
  • One of the objects of the invention is to provide a safety lock of the type indicated which can easily be inserted into the breech of the firearm and be removed therefrom with equal facility and expedience by means of a key in possession of an authorized person.
  • Another object is to provide a safety lock for firearms which is retained in firm engagement with the breech chamber of the gun so as to make forcible removal therefrom impossible without damaging it to such an extent as to render it useless as a firearm.
  • a further object is to provide a safety breech plug which can be applied to conventional firearms without any modification thereof.
  • FIG. 1 is a fragmentary longitudinal section of a firearm showing the safety lock according to the invention in locked position;
  • FIG. 2 is a section taken along the line IIII of FIG. 11;
  • FIG. 3 is a perspective view of the lock bolt according to the invention in unlocked position
  • FIG. 4- is a perspective view showing the lock bolt in locked position.
  • the reference numeral indicates the breech receiver which is mounted on the gun stock ill.
  • the barrel 12 is screwed into the forward end of the breech block 115.
  • the forward portion of the breech block is provided with an annular chamber 13, defined by the rear wall of the breech block and the rear surface of the barrel in which the breech bolt (not shown) is received upon injection of a shell into the chamber and retained therein in locked position by turning the bolt to cock the gun.
  • the breech receiver also has a conventional opening 114 to which the cartridge magazine (not shown) may be connected and from which the shells or cartridges may be injected into the barrel.
  • the breech block 115 is provided with a conventional opening 116 for the breech bolt, the cross sectional configuration of which is shown in FIG. 2.
  • the device according to the invention comprises a lug or lock member 17 which is rotatably connected to the lock cylinder member 18.
  • the lock memberl7 and the lock cylinder member l8 have substantially the same cross sectional configurations as the opening 16 so that they can be inserted therethrough and the lug 17 received in the annular chamber 13.
  • the forward end portion 20 of the lock cylinder I9 is pivoted in the socket 21 of the lug 117 by means of the pin 22 which extends through the hole 23 in the lug l7 and the hole 24 in the lock cylinder 19.
  • the lock cylinder is of conventional design and comprises a tumbler including a plurality of lock discs 25 which are separated under spring-urged tension by means of springs 26.
  • the lock bar 27 prevents rotation of the cylinder when the wrong key 29 is inserted into the key hole.
  • the cylinder 19 is retained in the member 18 by the conventional ring 2%.
  • the cylinder member 18 is provided with a beveled shoulder 30 which engages and abuts against the beveled surface M at the bottom of the opening 16 of the breech block.
  • the breech bolt is first retracted or removed from the breech receiver whereupon the lock plug according to the invention is inserted through the opening 16 so as to locate the lug 17 within the chamber 113 with the lock cylinder member partially accommodated in the opening 116.
  • the key 29 is then turned which operation causes each of the discs 25 to rotate a predetermined fraction of a revolution in accordance with the shape of the key.
  • the conventional recesses on the periphery of the discs become aligned causing the lock bar 27 to drip into the recesses thereby unlocking the cylinder and permitting it to rotate as the key is turned another 90.
  • the rotation of the lock cylinder causes the lug 17 to rotate 90 to abut against the surface 32 of the rear end of the barrel to become retained in locked position in the chamber 13.
  • the foregoing operation is reversed for the removal of the lock plug.
  • a lock member rotatably connected to a cylinder member; b. said members having a cross section corresponding substantially to the cross sectional configuration of the breech opening to permit insertion of said members into said breech opening and reception of said lock member into said annular chamber;
  • a safety lock according to claim 2 in which the lock member is rotated into locked position by a key inserted into said cylinder member.
