UNITED STATES PATENT GEEIcE.
WILLIAM MORRIsOr, OE TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA.
HOT-AIR FURNACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 376,390, dated' January 10, 1888.
Application filed April 14, A1886` Renewed May 14, 1887, Serial No. 238,287. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM MORRISON, of the city of Toronto, in the county-of York, in
the Province of Ontario, Canada, manufacturer, have invented an Improved Hot-Air Furnace, of which the following is a specilication. l f
The object of the invention is to design a sectional heater in which the greatest possible heating-surface is obtained, and which may be adapted for hot air, hot'water, or steam, or hot air and steam, or hot Water and hot air combined; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure l is aperspective view of my improved heater, partially in section, exhibiting it as a combined hotair and hot-Water or hotair and steam heater. Fig. 2 is a plan ot' a steam or hot-water section. Fig. 3 is an elevation, partially in section, showing the manner of connecting the sections together. Fig. 4 is a partial plan of a hot-airsection. Fig. 5 is an alternative form of the same.,
In the drawings like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
A represents the cold air duct leading into the space between the outer shell, B, and the heater proper.
C represents the hot-air ducs, from which the heated air is conveyed to the different parts ot' the house.
D is the hot-water or steam pipe leading from the top section, E, to the coils in theY house.
F is the return-pipe connecting the coils with the bottom hot-Water section.
G is a smoke-pipe which extends through the topV section, E, as indicated.
In Fig. l I show the four lower sections, H, I, J, and K, made to constitute what I may term hotair sections. These consist of tubes a, extending clear through the section and having open ends to communicatewith the space between the heater and the outer shell, B. It will be noticed that the tubes in the section I are placed at right angles to the tubes in the section H, and that the tubes in K are at right angles to the tubes in J. In
- other words, the tubes in one section are at right angles to the tubes next to them, as indicated by Figs. 4 and 5. These sections H,
dicated.
In order to form joints between the sections L, M, N, and O, and at t-he same time connect them all together, I form an open ring, Q, through which the bolts I? pass, and the surfaces of which coming in contact with each` other form a facejoint between each section.
I may here mention that instead of the common sand joint represented in Figs. 3 and 4, the sections H, I, J, and K may be provided withjoints similar to that shown in Fig.2. This is suggested by Fig. 5.
The top section, E, is a chamber extending completely across the heater, and with which chamber the steam or water sections L, M, N, and O communicate, so that when the heater is used as a steam-heater the steam accumulates in the chamber formed in the section E, or when they are to be used as hot-water sections a large body of water is held in the section E, to be drawn upon by the pipe D.
By placing the tubes alternately at right angles to each other the ascending heated gases are, as itwere, broken in passing between the tubes, thus causing each tube to be encircled, and thereby securing a maximum of heating or fire surface to a minimum of gratesurface.
A further advantage I secure by setting the tubes as mentioned is the facility with which their outside surfaces may be cleaned.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. vIhe combination, with the fire-chamber, of a plurality of hot-air sections, H I J K, each provided with open-ended tubes, but distinct from each other, arranged above said iirechamber, a plurality of water-sections, each communicating with the other and superim ICO posed upon said hot-air sections, and a shell surrounding said sections, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the communicating sections LM N O, each comprising a rectangular surrounding tube, a plurality of tra-.1S- verse tubes openingr into the surrounding tube and an opening at each corner, the top Section, E, forming a steam or Water Chamber, the outlet-pipe D,eonin1unieating with the top section, the inlet-pipe F, communicating with the lowest section, O, and a snrrouiuling shell, sub.- stantially as described.
3. The combination, with the lire-chamber, ofthe sections H I J K, constructed, as described, With transverse tubes at each end, each section distinet from the other and ar ranged above said lire-cha1nber, the Communicating sections L M N O, superimposed upon said sections, a section, E, above said sections L M N O and forlninga Water or steam ehan1- ber, and an outer shell surrounding said seo lions, substantially as described.
4. The co1ubination,with the outer shell, B, and the hot-air sections H I J K. and closed communicating water-sections L M N O, Superilnposed thereon, of the waterseetion E above the watenseetions and communicating therewith, the smoke-pipe G, extending through the section E, the return-pipe F, connected with the lower water-section, and the steampipe D and hot-air lines G, substantially as and l'or the purpose spoeiied.
