PRESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 376,300, dated January 10, 1888. Application filedA11-il20, 1837. Serial No. 235,514. (No model.)
To (LZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LORENZO Dow GORDON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Tenaha, in the county of Shelbyand State of Texas, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to an improvement in levy-powers which is applicable for various pu rposes, notably for presses for balin g cotton, hay, and wool, cider and grape presses, and for presses for expressing oil from cottonseed and the castor-bean, as also lard-oil from bacon, 800.; and to this end theinvention consists ofsundry combinations of parts, including their construction, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan view of my improved lever-power with the followers under pressure. Fig. 2 is a similar view thereof withthe pressure removed from the followers.
In the embodiment of my invention. I employ two levers, A, which are pivoted near their outer ends, as at a, between the parts of a frame, a, or two sills firmly secured together, and which sills or frame may be connected to a base or support, a. The extreme outer ends of these levers carry two togglearms, B B, which are also connected to a follower, 0, disposed between and transversely to the length of thesills or parts of the frame a, and which rests upon a board, b, and is guided at its upper side in'a recess, 0, in the under side of the up per sill or part of the said frame, and at its lower longitudinal edges between cleats or strips 0, fastened to the board b. O is a sec 0nd or main follower, also resting or sliding upon the board I), and guided atits lower longitudinal edges and sides between the same cleats or strips a, forming guides for the follower Oand upward extensions 0 of said cleats or strips, while at its upper longitudinal edges it is guided between 0' of the cleats or guides c. This follower O is connected, also,by two toggle-arms, B B, to the levers A A, said arms being connected to the follower next its operating end, and to the levers at points somewhat beyond their the operating ends angular cleats or guides d, fastened or bolted to the upward extensions operating ends. The follower C is recessed at its sides,to permit of the maximum inward movement of the levers A. The levers A A are operated by lines or chains D D, one set of which is connected to a shaft or Windlass, E, mounted upon the base or support a and to of the levers, while the otherset of lines or chains, D,is also connected to said shaft or windlass, thence passed around pulleys e 9, supported upon the base or support a and also connected to the operating ends of the levers.
One among other ways for conveniently and simultaneously actuating the levers 'A A through the latter described appliances is by the use of a handled pulley or drum,f, and a belt passed around said pulley Or drum, and a second pulley or drum,f, upon the shaft E. The action of the followers is apparent, the same approaching each other, one, however, having a greater movement than the other as the levers are moved toward each other, and thus exerting pressure upon or compressing the article or substance placed or interposed between the followers, while as the levers are separated said followers will be moved apart, releasing the interposed substance and permitting it to be removed or manipulated, as may be required, which operation of parts, it will be observed, underlies the principle of action of the cotton, hay, and wool press, as also presses for expressing oil from the cotton-seed and the castor-bean, as well as presses for obtaining lard-oil from bacon, 850., thus rendering the invention capable of use for any of the aforesaid purposes, among others which it is unnecessary here to mention.
The contrivance can be worked or applied either horizontally or vertically. It exerts a very powerful pressure and may comprise or include additional levers.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. In a press, the combination of the manipulating-levers,the followers, and the togglearms, of which arms the outer ends of two are connected to the outer ends of the levers, while their inner ends are connected to the sides of I 0 the follower near its inner end, and the outer mid-length on that side thereof next to their .1 ends of the others are connected to the levers near their mid-lengths, while their inner ends 3. The press comprising the coacting follow- 10 are connected to the sides of the other follower ers, each directly connected to levers by two near its inner end, substantially as and for the toggle-arms, said levers having connection by purpose set forth. chains or lines to a shaft, substantially as and 2. The press comprising two followers and for the purpose specified.
two levers, each of the latter connected by two LORENZO DOW GORDON. toggle-arms to said followers, and mechanism Vitnesses:
for their simultaneous operation, substantially A. J. ELLIOTT,
as and for the purpose set forth. I CALVIN HAMMER.
