FIG. 3 is an end elevation of the invention;
FIG. 4 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of FIG. 3 looking in the direction of the arrow;
FIG. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary transverse sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of FIG. 4 looking in the direction of the arrow; A
FIG. 6 is a top plan view of the releasable retainer used for securing the base to the frame of the machine;
FIG. 7 is a side elevation of the structure illustrated in FIG. 6; and
FIG. 8 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line 8-8 of FIG. 5, looking in the direction of the arrows.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED. EMBODIMENT Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the several figures, the reference numeral 10 indicates generally an impact tool constructed in accordance with the invention.
The impact tool 10 includes a generally flat base plate 11 arranged in a horizontal plane and having a pair of upstanding ears 12 rigidly secured to one edge thereof. A hollowtubular standard 13 has its lower end rigidly secured to the plate 11 and extends'vertically upward therefrom. l
A generally L'-shaped clamping plate 14 is vertically adjustably secured to the cars 12 by means of any desired number of bolts 15. The L-shaped clamping plate 14 has a horizontal extension 16 which engages under one edge of the frame member 17 on which the base plate 11 is resting.
A U-shaped jaw member 18 is adapted to engage the opposite top edge of the frame member 17 in opposed relation to the L-shaped clamping member 14 as can be seen in FIG. 2. An over dead-center tightener is indicated generally at 19 connected to the jaw member 18. A locking pin P is provided for the tightener l9 and is releasably engaged in bore 8 therein.
The chain 20 is detachably secured to an open eye 21 mounted on the ears 12. A coil spring 22 extends between and connects the tightener 19 with the chain 20 so as to hold the jaw member 18 in snug engagement with the frame member 17 to secure the base plate 11 rigidly thereto.
The tubular standard 13 is provided with a plurality of vertically spaced retainer pin bores 23 which extend completely therethrough. A tubular movable standard 24 is telescopically slidably mounted in the standard 13 and has a plurality of vertically spaced retainer pin bores 25 which are adapted to be selectively aligned with the retainer pin bores 23 in the standard 13 to receive a retainer pin bolt 26 which extends therethrough. The bolt 26 is locked in place with a nut 27 and has a stirrup-like handle 28 rigidly secured to the head 2 9v thereof. The stirrup handle 28 provides a handie for carrying the impact tool 10. The upper tubular standard 24 has a circular flat plate 30 rigidly secured horizontally to the upper end thereof, a circular flat plate 30a is swivelly mounted on the plate 30 by a pair of bolts 30b which extend through arcuate slots 300 in the plate 30 and through arcuate slots 30d in the plate 30a. An upstanding tongue 31 is secured to the plate 30a.
A generally horizontal tubular sleeve 32 is positioned to overlie the upper standard 24 and is provided with a pair of spaced apart parallel ears 33 which engage on opposite sides of the tongue 31. The cars 33 and the tongue 31 are provided with vertically spaced bores 34,35 to receive one or two threaded bolts 34d. When a single bolt 34a is used as shown in the drawings the sleeve 32 may be angularly adjusted with respect to the horizontal by loosening the bolt 34a and then tightening it to clamp the ears 33 to the tongue 31 with the sleeve in desired adjusted position. When two bolts 340 are used the sleeve 32 is locked in horizontal position.
A generally cylindrical impact member 36, formed of hydraulic heavy duty pipe, is slidably mounted in the sleeve 32 for movement therein. A cap 37 is removably threaded onto each end of the impact member 36 to retain it in the sleeve 32. The caps 37 may be removed in assembling and disassembling the tool 10 and may be replaced with new caps 37 when the old have received extensive impact damage.
When it is desired to tighten or loosen the nut 38 forming part of a machine not'otherwise described, one of the cap members 37 is engaged against a lug 39 forming part of the nut 38, and the base plate 11 is clamped onto the frame member 17 forming part of the machine, by tightening the over deadcenter. clamp 19 with the jaw member 18 in engagement with one edge of the frame member 17. With the impact tool in this position a hammer is used to strike the cap 37 on the impact member 36 opposite the cap 37 engaged with the nut 38. The impact with the hammer is continued until thenut is either loosened or tightened the desired amount. To use the tool 10 in the. opposite manner the standard 24 is moved upwardly in the standard 13 until the sleeve 32 aligns with a lug 39 on the opposite side of the nut 38 whereupon impacts are applied to the nut 38 to turn the nut'38 in the opposite direction. Alternatively sleeve 32 and cylindrical impact member 36 can be tilted to align with opposite side of nut for opposite rotation thereof, by loosening bolt 34a and tilting sleeve 32 and cylindrical impact member 36 at the tongue 31 and cars 33 and then tightening bolt 34a. The sleeve 32 may also be adjusted about a circular axis for alignment with the nut 38, by loosening the bolts 30!), adjusting the sleeve 32 angle and retightening the bolts 30b.
Having thus described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it should be understood that numerous structural modifications and adaptations may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
