Be it known'that 1, WILLIAM HUMANS, of Cambridge, in the county of MiddleseX and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Press-Knob Generator, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a plan, Fig. 3 a bottom plan, and Figs. 2 and 4 sections, of one of my generators. Fig. 5 illustrates the construction Figs. (Sand 7 illustrate the construction of the pole-pieces. Figs. 8 and 9, show a modification. Fig. 10 is a perspective detail.
In the drawings, A represents a permanent magnet, which may be of any usual construction; but as shown is fully described in my application, Serial No. 172,432.
B is a revolving armature, upon one end of which is the pawl 19, which engages with the ratchet b, and this ratchet is fast to the same hub to which pinion I) is fast, the shaft of the armature passing through this hub, so that the pinion b may revolve in one direction without moving the armature, or the armature may revolve in one direction independently of the pinion. The pinion I) is re volved by the sector D, which is fast to the rock-shaft d. Another arm, d, of rock-shaft disjointed to the push-pin d, so that when the push-pin is thrust inward the sector D causes the pinion b to revolve rapidly, and as the pinion b is then connected by the pawl b and ratchet b to armature B, that armature is rapidly revolved when the push-pin is forced in, thus generating currents for signaling and other purposes. When the push-pin d is inserted through the side of the case, as in Figs. 1 and 4, it may bejointed directly to the arm d of the rock-shaft; butwhen the push-pin d is not crosswise of the rock-shaft some intermediate connection must be used, as in Figs. 8 and 9. This combination of the push-pin with the armature and its pinion, by means of a rockshaft and sector-gear, constitutes one feature of my invention.

spring-arm f for closing the circuits. This armf is a rod of metal, one part of which extends into the coiled spring f, one end of the coil being fast to it and the other end being fast to the insulatingblock f at the screwcup f, by which the coil f is connected to the circuit. The arm f is held normally out of contact with the pintlef on the armatureshaft by the insulator in the end of arm f of rockshaft d,- but when rock-shaft (Z is moved on its axis to revolve the armature its arm f is moved away from arm f, and arm f is pressed against pintle f", and as one end of the armature coil is in metallic contact with the shalt of the armature in the usual way the currents generated in the coil go to line through pintle f arm f, and coiled spring f. This is an important feature, for the reason that when a number of press-knob generators are connected to the same pair of conductors each must be in open circuit with the hell or other signal, as otherwise the current would be divided among them all, and that portion of it which went to the signal would be too weak; but when there is but one generator in circuit with the hell no such division takes place, but the full force of the current is properly applied.
Another feature of my invention is the combination of the pole-pieces g g by means of two clamping-disks, g 9, held together by screws or nuts 9 g", and recessed in the polepieoes-that is, each polepiece is formed with a recess at each endso that when the disks 9 of non-magnetic metal are clamped together, with the pole-pieces between them, the polepieces are not only firmly held, but also centered, so that the armature may run close to the inner surface of the pole-pieces without danger of binding. The disks gg' not only serve as bearings for the armature-shaft, but also serve as a frame for the roclcshaft d and its connections and the insulating-block f WVhat I claim as my invention is- 1. In combination, the armature, its pawl 12, ratchet b, pinion b sector-gear D, rockshaft d, and press-knob (1 substantially as described.
