Abstract

A segmental grinding wheel having a plurality of abrasive segments mounted on a one-piece chuck body. Each segment is secured to the chuck body by a removable, wedge-like clamp, and a second clamp which is an integral part of the chuck body.

I 46 3o 6 INVENTOR AOff/V 5. //4/VC//f77 ATTORNEYS SEGMENTAL GRINDING WHEEL SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to and has for an object the provision of a new and improved segmental grinding wheel adapted to employ abrasive segments of varying thickness, so that the total abrasive area can be regulated in accordance with the grinding to be done and the horsepower available.
Another object is to provide a segmental grinding wheel which may be built in different diameters and yet be capable of utilizing the same size abrasive segments.
Another object is to provide a segmental grinding wheel having a chuck body of one-piece construction, in which each abrasive segment is secured to the chuck body by a removable wedge-like clamp, and a second clamp which is an integral part of the chuck body.
Another object is to provide an improved segmental grinding wheel which may be readily converted to a cylinder wheel, and one further in which the mountings for either the segmental wheel or the cylinder wheel are such that only single positioning is possible, thereby maintaining a proper arrangement of parts and precise pre-balanced condition at all times.
Another object is to provide a segmental grinding wheel having means preferably in the form of a segment spacer for repositioning the segments to achieve maximum segment wear, at the same time insuring that the operator will properly re-install all parts of the chuck as the segments become worn down and are reset.
Another object is to provide a segmental grinding wheel having improved coolant distribution and penetration.
Other objects and features of the invention will become apparent as the description proceeds, especially when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
FIG. 1 is a front elevational view of a segmental grinding wheel constructed in accordance with my invention.
FIG. 2 is a side or edge view of the segmental grinding wheel shown in FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 in FIG. 1.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the segmental grinding wheel comprises a mounting plate 10, a ring-shaped chuck body 12, and abrasive segments 14 mounted in angularly spaced relation around the periphery of the chuck body. The mounting plate and chuck body 12 are shown as circular, but may be any shape that might be desired as long as it can be balanced.
The chuck body 12 is mounted on the front face 16 of mounting plate 10 in concentric relation therewith by mounting screws 18. The chuck body 12 is located and driven on mounting plate 10 by means of the pins 20 which are disposed in registering holes in the two members. As seen in FIG. 1, the pins 20 are angularly spaced from one another different distances so that the chuck body can be mounted on the mounting plate in only one position, thereby maintaining a proper arrangement of parts and a precise prebalanced condition of the chuck.
Mounting screws 21 are provided to secure the mounting plate 10 to a wheel collar of the grinder for rotation about the grinding wheel axis 23.
The abrasive segments 14 are solid blocks of abrasive which engage the work and grind on their front faces 22. These front faces 22 lie in a common plate during grinding as clearly shown in FIG. 2. The sides 24 and 25 of each abrasive segment taper or converge toward one another in a generally radially outward direction. It will be understood that the direction of taper may vary from true radial. This may be done by setting the segment itself at a slight angle to a true radius.
The chuck body 12 has a plurality of equally spaced, radially outwardly facing surfaces providing seats 26 around the outer periphery of the chuck body. An abrasive segment 14 is clamped upon each of the seats 26.
The means for clamping the abrasive segments on their seats include the clamps 28 and 30. The clamps 28 are integral portions of the chuck body which project radially outwardly beyond the seats 26 at one side thereof. The clamps 30 are removable wedge-like members which are disposed at the other side of the seats 26. Each abrasive segment is clamped upon its seat by one integral clamp 28 and one removable clamp 30.
Each integral clamp 28 has a clamping surface 32 which is prarllel to and engages the side 25 of a segment in full surface-to-surface relation.
Each removable clamp 30 has the radially inwardly tapering sides 34 and 36. The side 36 is parallel to and engages the side 24 of a segment in full surface-tosurface relation. The other side 34 of the clamp is parallel to and engages the side 38 of the adjacent integral clamp 28 in full surface-to-surface relation. The clamps 30 are secured to the chuck body 12 by the screws 40. These screws are shown as extending radially, although it will be understood that they may vary slightly from true radial depending upon the setting of the segments. Each screw 40 threads into a radially outwardly facing land 42 located between a seat 26 and the integral clamp 28 for the next segment. Each clamp 30 is drawn down tightly by a screw 40 in firm wedging engagement with the side 24 of an abrasive segment and the side 38 of the integral clamp 28 for the next adjacent segment. When fully tightened, the clamps 30 are spaced from the lands 42 so that the full clamping pressure is brought to bear upon the segments.
The seats 26 and clamps 28 and 30 define recesses for the abrasive segments which are open in a radially outward direction and also in an axial or forward direction. Accordingly, the abrasive segments may be of a different radial thickness than is shown in FIG. 1. They may, for example be of the thickness indicated in dotdash lines at 44. The radial thickness of the abrasive elements therefore may be varied depending upon the grinding to be done and the horsepower available.
In use, the abrasive segments are placed upon the seats 26 with their rear faces abutting the front face 16 of the mounting plate. The screws 40 are then tightened to draw the clamps 30 down into firm wedging engagement with the abrasive segments and lock them securely upon their seats. The radially outward taper of the surfaces 32 and 36 of the clamps 28 and 30 positively locks the abrasive segments on their seats against the action of centrifugal force. The grinding wheel is rotated about axis 23 with the front faces 22 of the abrasive segments in grinding contact with the work.
The abrasive segments will in time wear down, but they have a longer life in accordance with the present invention because of the provision of the segment spacers which are a part of my invention and which are designated 46 in FIG. 3. These spacers are not needed when the abrasive segments are new, but after the segments become partially worn the spacers are placed upon the seats 26 between and in abutting relation with the segments and the mounting plate 10. The spacers 46 have substantially the same outline when viewed in front elevation as the abrasive segments shown in FIG. 1 so that they will readily fit in the recesses defined by seats 26 and the clamps 28 and 30. However, the spacers are preferably slightly narrower than the abrasive segments 14 so that the full clamping pressure of the clamps 28 and 30 will be applied to the abrasive segments rather than to the spacers. The clamps 28 and 30 overlap the spacers as well as the abrasive segments, as clearly shown in FIG. 3, to retain both on their seats 26.
It will be seen from the foregoing that different diameter wheels may be employed while utilizing the same size abrasive segment. Thus a larger wheel than the one shown in FIG. 1 may be employed but in which the segment recesses provided by the seats and the: clamps are of the same dimension and therefore capable of receiving the same size abrasive segments. On the other hand, without changing the size of the segmental grinding wheel shown in the drawings, abrasive segments of different thicknesses may be readily substituted depending on the grinding to be done and the horsepower available.
It will be noted further that the chuck body 12 can be readily removed from the mounting plate by removing the mounting screws 18 and pins 20, and a conventional cylinder grinding wheel secured to the mounting plate in its place.
The construction illustrated in the drawings will prvide an improved distribution and penetration of coolant due to the semi-nozzle effect afiorded by the spacing and arrangement of the abrasive segments.
What I claim as my invention is:
l. A segmental grinding wheel comprising a rotatable mounting plate, a generally cylindrical chuck body mounted on the front face of said mounting plate in coaxial relation therewith, a plurality of abrasive segments, means mounting said abrasive segments on said chuck body in circumferentially spaced relation about the axis of rotation thereof including a plurality of circumferentially spaced, generally radially outwardly facing seats on the periphery of said chuck body, means for securing an abrasive segment on each seat comprising a pair of circumferentially spaced clamps disposed radially outwardly of each seat on opposite sides thereof and wedgingly engageable with opposite sides of the segment thereon to apply radially inward clamping pressure thereto, one clamp of each pair being an integral part of said chuck body and the other being removably secured thereto, said seats and clamps defining segment recesses which are open at the front of said chuck body and said segments projecting forwardly therefrom for grinding, said recesses being open in a generally radially outward direction to permit the use of segments of varying radial thickness.
2. The segmental grinding wheel defined'in claim 1, wherein said recesses extend through the rear face of said chuck body and are closed at the rear by said mounting plate, and a spacer on at least one of said seats between and in engagement with said mounting plate and an abrasive segment thereon to determine the amount of forward projection of the latter, said spacer being held on its seat by the clamps on opposite sides thereof which wedgingly engage the opposite sides of said spacer and apply radially inward clamping pressure thereto.

Claims (2)

1. A segmental grinding wheel comprising a rotatable mounting plate, a generally cylindrical chuck body mounted on the front face of said mounting plate in coaxial relation therewith, a plurality of abrasive segments, means mounting said abrasive segments on said chuck body in circumferentially spaced relation about the axis of rotation thereof including a plurality of circumferentially spaced, generally radially outwardly facing seats on the periphery of said chuck body, means for securing an abrasive segment on each seat comprising a pair of circumferentially spaced clamps disposed radially outwardly of each seat on opposite sides thereof and wedgingly engageable with opposite sides of the segment thereon to apply radially inward clamping pressure thereto, one clamp of each pair being an integral part of said chuck body and the other being removably secured thereto, said seats and clamps defining segment recesses which are open at the front of said chuck body and said segments projecting forwardly therefrom for grinding, said recesses being open in a generally radially outward direction to permit the use of segments of varying radial thickness.
2. The segmental grinding wheel defined in claim 1, wherein said recesses extend through the rear face of said chuck body and are closed at the rear by said mounting plate, and a spacer on at least one of said seats between and in engagement with said mounting plate and an abrasive segment thereon to determine the amount of forward projection of the latter, said spacer being held on its seat by the clamps on opposite sides thereof which wedgingly engage the opposite sides of said spacer and apply radially inward clamping pressure thereto.
