Abstract

A lightproof film dispenser for a box formed from telescoping box parts. The box parts have adjacent cut-out portions in telescoping wall portions thereof. The dispenser is formed from a housing having a pair of spaced, parallel channels into which are fitted the longitudinal edges of the cut-out portions of the box parts. Each end of the dispenser is cut-away. A top wall of the cut-away portion at one end of the dispenser is at a level which is spaced from that of the corresponding top wall of the cut-away portion at the other end of the dispenser by a distance the same as the thickness of the material from which the box parts are made. This difference in levels of the top walls provides for a light-tight seal.

4 Claims, 5 Drawing Figures FILM DISPENSER BACKGROUND AND BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to film dispensers. More particularly, it provides a film dispenser which is designed for a box which is formed from completely telescoping box parts. A film dispenser in accordance with the present invention serves to hold the box parts together in telescoped fashion, while at the same time providing a light-tight seal.
The following patents are representative of the prior art: Zick U.S. Pat. No. 3,003,711 issued Oct. 10, 1961; Allen et al., US Pat. No. 3,190,577 issued June 22, 1965.
In the present invention use is made of light-sealing walls at different levels to take into account the differing positions of edges of telescoping box parts that abut against the dispenser.
The invention will be more completely understood by reference to the following detailed description of a representative embodiment thereof, which is presently preferred.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a film dispenser embodying the invention in position on a box.
FIG. 2 is a perspective view of part of the box of FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is an exploded, perspective view of the film dispenser of FIG. 1.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION Referring to FIG. 1 there is shown a dispenser in accordance with the invention for dispensing roll-type film 12. The dispenser shown is particularly suited for dispensing film to a photo typesetting machine, although this is representative. The film 12 is contained within a box 14, only part of which is shown. The box is formed from completely telescoping box parts 14a and 14b. The box parts 14a and 14b include cut-out one part (14a) entirely within the other (14b) portions 14a-1 and 14b-1, respectively, in adjacent, telescoping wall portions of the box parts. The cut-out portion 14a-l includes longitudinal edges 14a-1a and 14a-1b, while the cut-out portion 14b-1 includes longitudinal edges 14b-la and 14b-lb. These longitudinal edges are held within the film dispenser 10 as shown in FIG. 4, to be described in more detail below.
FIG. 3 shows the details of the film dispenser 10. Advantageously the dispenser is made in two parts, 10a and 10b. Typically the film dispenser is made of plastic by injection molding. The parts 19a and 10b could be symmetrical; however, the part 10a typically includes an open, box-shaped portion 10a-l which is used for attachment of the film dispenser to a photo typesetting machine (not shown). The dispenser part 10a includes a channel 10a-2 therein; a corresponding channel 10b-2 is included in the dispenser part 10b. The channels are at the same level, extend along the entire lengths of the sides of the dispenser, and are of constant dimensions throughout the entire lengths thereof. As shown in FIG. 4, the longitudinal edges 14b-1a and 10a-2 and 10b-2 are spaced from each other and extend parallel to each other.
As shown in FIG. 3, the dispenser part 10a includes ledge means, specifically a first ledge 10a-3 and a second ledge 10a-4 on the side thereof that abuts the other dispenser part 10b. The ledges are for the purpose of creating film passage 16 shown in FIGS. 1 and 4 when the two dispenser parts are positioned together. To aid in the joining together of the dispenser parts, the part 10a includes pins 18 which fit into corresponding holes 20 in the dispenser part 10b. The pins 18 and holes 20 cause proper alignment and joining together of the dispenser parts.
Each end of the dispenser 10 includes a cut-away portion. Specifically, as shown in FIG. 3, the dispenser part 10a includes a cut-away portion 10a-5 at one end thereof and a cut-away portion 10a-6 at the other end thereof; similarly, the dispenser part 101; includes a first cut-away portion 10b-5 at one end thereof and a second cut-away portion 10b-6 at the other end thereof. When the dispenser parts are joined together, the cutaway portions 10a-5 and 10b-5 form one combined cutaway portion at one end of the dispenser 10, while the cut-away portions 10a-6 and 10b-6 together form another cut-away portion at the other end of the dispenser. These cut-away portions at the ends of the dispenser include top walls; specifically, referring to FIG. 3, the top walls are designated 10a-5a and 10a-6a (dispenser part 10a) and 10b-5a and 10b-6a (dispenser part 10b). Referring to FIG. 5, which shows the cutaway portions 10b-5 and 10b-6, it will be noted that the top wall 10b-6a is at a level (the same as the level of the top of each of the channels 10a-2 and 10b-2) which is spaced from the level of the corresponding top wall 10b-5a at the other end of the dispenser by a distance designated d in FIG. 5. The distance d is substantially equal to the thickness of the material from which the box parts 14a and 14b are made. This difference in levels of top walls of the dispenser ends is to accommodate the difierent heights of the box parts 14a and 14b at these ends of the dispenser. In particular, referring to FIGS. 2 and 5, it will be noted that the top part 14b-2 of the box part 14b is at a higher level than the top part 14a-2 of the box part 14a. As shown in FIG. 5, the higher level box part 14b-2 abuts against the top wall 10b-6a, while the lower level box part 14a-2 abuts against the lower level top wall l0b-5a. In this fashion the present invention achieves a light-tight seal between the dispenser and the different parts of the telescoping box.
Tape (not shown) may be employed to seal all edges of the box.
It will be apparent that the embodiment of the invention disclosed and described in detail above is subject to, modification. Accordingly, the invention should be taken to be defined by the following claims.
I claim:
1. A lightproof film dispenser for a box formed from completely telescoping box parts, one part entirely within the other, said box parts having adjacent cut-out portions in telescoping wall portions thereof, said dispenser comprising a housing having a pair of spaced, parallel channels at the same level along sides thereof into which are fitted the longitudinal edges of said cutout portions, said channels extending along the entire lengths of the sides of said dispenser and being of constant dimensions throughout the entire lengths thereof; a cut-away portion at each end of said dispenser; a top wall of the cut-away portion at one end of the dispenser being at a first level which is the same as the level of the top of each of said channels; the top wall of the cutaway portion at the other end of the dispenser being at a level below said first level by a distance substantially equal to the thickness of the material from which said dispenser parts.

Claims (4)

1. A lightproof film dispenser for a box formed from completely telescoping box parts, one part entirely within the other, said box parts having adjacent cut-out portions in telescoping wall portions thereof, said dispenser comprising a housing having a pair of spaced, parallel channels at the same level along sides thereof into which are fitted the longitudinal edges of said cutout portions, said channels extending along the entire lengths of the sides of said dispenser and being of constant dimensions throughout the entire lengths thereof; a cut-away portion at each end of said dispenser; a top wall of the cut-away portion at one end of the dispenser being at a first level which is the same as the level of the top of each of said channels; the top wall of the cut-away portion at the other end of the dispenser being at a level below said first level by a distance substantially equal to the thickness of the material from which said box parts are made.
2. A film dispenser according to claim 1, in which said dispenser is made from two parts.
3. A film dispenser according to claim 2, in which one of said dispenser parts includes ledge means thereon so as to create a film passage through said dispenser when said dispenser parts are joined together.
4. A film dispenser according to claim 2, in which one of said dispenser parts includes pins and the other of said dispenser parts includes holes into which said pins fit to cause proper alignment and joining of said dispenser parts.
