SMOKE-CONSUMJNG VFURNACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 375,169, dated December 20, 1887.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, FRED LEADBEATER, a citizen of the United States, residing at De. troit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoke-Consuming Furnaces, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in smoke-consuming furnaces; and the invention consists in the peculiar construction, arrangement, and operation of steam and air feeding devices, all as more fully hereinafter described.
In the drawings which accompany this specication, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a boiler-furnace to which my improvement is applied. Fig. 2 is a detached perspective view of the steam and air in]l ector taken apart. Fig. 3 is a cross-section through the same.
A is a disk-shaped casting or shell, preferably constructed in two like halves, each of which is provided with annular grooves, which,when the two parts are secured together, form two annular passages, a b, in the shell. The outer annular passage, a, is divided by a bridge, c, and to the rear side of the shell are connected the pipes d ef. The pipes d e lead into the passage a upon opposite sides of the bridge c, and the pipe f leads into the passage b.

The center of the shell is provided with one or more apertures, t', and a suitable packing, j, preferably asbestus packing, is placed between the joints of the two parts of the shell to make the passages a b steam and water tight when secured together by means of the screws or bolts 7a. l
In practice the casting or shell A is placed in the furnace of a steam-generator some distance in'rear of the boiler-front and between the generator and the furnace-grate. In this position it is supported by the pipes d ef, the former two of which pass through the boilerfront and connect with the waterspace of the boiler to furnish a circulation of water, or, if not precisely a circulation, to admit at least water into the passage a of the shell. This I preferably accomplish by connecting one of the pipes at or to the lower end of the watergage, and the other pipe at or near the upper end of the same gage; but any other connection accomplishing the same result of filling the passage a with water may be made. The pipe f, I also lead through the boiler-front and then connect it with the steam-space ofthe boiler, preferably the steam-dome. By means of this connection steam is conducted into the passage b of the shell and injected through the apertures g into the furnace. jetapertures shown, which are preferably so arranged that the two outer ones cross each other and project the steam horizontally Vbut diagonally toward the side walls, so that the steam -will strike at about the junction of the bridge-wall with the side walls. The central jet passes in a horizontal and downward direction toward the center of the bridge-wall,
There are three so that the three jets combined inject the steam in the form of a sheet, which screens the under side of the generator, so that the smoke cannot raise and part with its heat by contact with the boiler-plates, which would largely decrease its combustion.
The smoke from the fuel on the grate comes immediately in contact with the steam, and is, so to speak, rolled out of the furnace, which causes it to thoroughly mingle with the steam and come in contact with the incandescent fuel at the rear end of the grate, where it is consumed. The necessary air is simultaneously injected 4into the furnace through the action of the aperture t, and it is mingled with the steam and smoke.
The air I preferably introduce through apertures o in the dead-plate, or through apertures in the boiler-front, or otherwise provided for in .proximity to the shell A.
The beneficial result of injecting steam and air under proper conditions into the furnace is well understood and appreciated as the most simple and effectual means for consuming smoke; but in the practical application it has always been found impossible to maintain an effective device constructed for that purpose in operating condition for more than a short space of time on account of the destroying effect of the heat; but by means of my construction I have succeeded in rendering the device at once effective and lasting, as the admission of water into the shell thoroughly protects the same from the excessive heat of the fire.

What I claim as my invention is- 1. In a device for consuming smoke, the combination, With a steam-injector consisting of a shell or casting supported within the fur-- nace, and provided with stea1nconnecton Wit-h the generator and with steam-jets for injecting the steam into the furnace, of a Water-passage formed Within said shell and provided with inlet and outlet connections to provide a circulation of Water through said shell, substantially as described.
2. In a steam and air injector for consuming smoke, the combination, with the furnace, ofthe circular shell or casting A, the annular Water and steam passages a b, the bridge c in the passage a, the pipes d e, connected'with the Water-passage, the pipef, connected with the steam-passage, the steanrjet aperture g, and air-aperture i, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as described.
3. In a steam and air injector for consuming smoke, the combination, with the furnace, of the circular shell or casting A, made in like halves, the annular Water and steam passages a b, the bridge c in the passage a, the pipes d e, connected at one end to the passage a and at the other end to the Water-gage, the pipe f, connected at one end to the passage b and at the other end to the steam-space of the boiler, the steam-jet apertures g, and the air-aperture z', all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as described.
